TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 23, 2020 MASS ATTENDANCE As you know, due to the restrictions with regard to the Coronavirus, we are only allowed a certain number of people in the church at the Masses. Please be aware that if we do reach our maximum we cannot let anyone else in that day. And although it breaks our hearts to have to turn anyone away it is out of our hands and we must abide by the law. We greatly appreciate your understanding and patience at this difficult time. God bless! KNOWING WHERE YOU STAND Opinions are easy to come by. People today are all too ready to share their theories, no matter how bizarre, with anyone willing to listen. And in this barrage of “new age” concepts Christians can easily get confused. Trendy theories will interfere with our personal faith if we spend too much time paying heed. Jesus knew what that was like. When He spoke to the disciples He first asked them, who do people say that I am?” and listened calmly to all the theories. Then Jesus quietly asked, “but who do you say that I am?” His simple question called to the disciples’ hearts, urging them to step away from popular theories and rumor, relying instead on His teachings. It’s a matter of knowing where you stand. When you stand firmly in God’s house, relying on His doctrines, you won’t be swayed by the latest religious fad. Ask yourself today, who do I say Jesus is? Do my answers come from scripture and the church’s teachings or have I found them in the latest bestseller?

MASS ATTENDANCE As you know, due to the restrictions with regard to the Coronavirus, we are only allowed a certain number of people in the church at the Masses.

Then Jesus quietly asked, “but who do you say that I am?” His simple question called to the disciples’ hearts, urging them to step away from popular theories and rumor, relying instead on His teachings. ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. St. Alphonsus de Liguori

NOTE ON DONATIONS Many thanks to all of you who have continued to give to our Parish during this terrible virus. Many of you, even those who are not yet able to attend Mass, are still making their donations and we greatly appreciate it! We ask that keep us in mind if you are on vacation this summer. Unfortunately, our Parish expenses never take a holiday so we require your ongoing assistance. Thank you so much for your continued generosity and support in keeping our Church operating and beautiful!

IN OR OUT? Sometimes life comes down to one simple choice: are we in or out? A business deal, a mortgage, simply volunteering for carpool – it’s basically the same thing. We think about our options, consider the work involved, maybe even pray. But then it comes down to a moment of decision. And if we wait too long we may lose everything. Our faith life is like that too. Years can be spent while we meditate on mysteries, argue dogma, contemplate paradox, but in the end it’s merely a choice. We believe in God or we don’t. We follow in Jesus footsteps or we seek our own path. Yes, it’s a big decision but in the end the answer is simply a “yes” or “no”. Waffle, waver and wait all you want, the choice will still be there at the end of your dithering. Just as Jesus confronted the disciples saying “Do you believe or will you leave me?” we are asked the same question today. So much complex beauty, religion and mystery boiled down to one little question. Are we in or are we out? Faith – it’s just that simple.

ANNUAL CWL RAFFLE The Annual CWL Raffle is taking place by phone this year since due to COVID 19 safety concerns, there is no Fall Tea and Bazaar. Raffle tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 as in the past, and prizes are $1000 (1st), $250 (2nd), and $250 (3rd), the draw to be held at HNOM church on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 4:00pm. We are asking that you consider buying or selling tickets within your social circle/bubble in lieu of your past financial and material contributions to the Annual Tea and Bazaar. CWL members are receiving a phone call, but all other parishioners are invited to call Ruth DuBois (256-7030) or Phyllis Moore (256-5735) to order tickets for themselves or to sell to friends. Thanks for your anticipated support of this major fundraiser.

N E W Improved access to Formed.

If you have not registered for Formed or have had problems setting up an account, the procedure has been simplified. Go to www.hnomalmonte.formed.org and enter your name, email and create a password. That’s it. And our parish community still has unlimited access to all the same great and best Catholic content all in one place. There is something for everyone here.

ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS Alkaline Hydrolysis is now available in Ontario as a new method of bodily disposition. The Commission for Doctrine of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops studied this issue and issued a statement in July 31, 2018 as to why the process is to be discouraged among Catholics. Just because such an option is now available does not mean that it is in keeping with our Catholic beliefs and practices. The final paragraph of the CCCB statement reads: “our research leads the Commission to the opinion that alkaline hydrolysis does not manifest adequate respect for the dignity of the human body as proclaimed by the faith of the Church. This is primarily due to the fact, apart from bone residue, the remnants of the entire body are disposed of in the sewer system. It is further compounded by the fact that, in the operation of certain hydrolysis machines, the machine operator may first be required to puncture or crush the skull of the deceased in order to ensure the complete digestion of soft tissues. This adds another indignity to the body.”
