What is Midwifery?Women are unique in many ways, very much like IHA’s Nurse Midwives. IHA Nurse Midwives not only offer comprehensive prenatal and childbirth services, but also provide the entire spectrum of well-woman gynecological care. With a focus on wellness education, our midwives are committed to enhancing a woman’s self-reliance and trust in her normal life process. IHA Nurse Midwives practice evidence-based medicine offering comprehensive women’s health care, from preconception counseling, obstetrical and gynecologic services, normal labor management and vaginal deliveries. Nurse midwives have graduated from a nurse-midwifery education program accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and have passed a national certification examination to receive the professional designation of certified nurse midwife. Nurse midwives have been practicing in the United States since the 1920s. Our sensitive and professional approach to gynecologic primary care includes annual assessments and evaluations and consultative services with specialists as needed.

What is Maternal-Fetal Medicine?Maternal-fetal medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of expectant mothers and their developing babies, who may be at high risk for special health problems. Women are generally referred to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist by their obstetrician or by an infertility specialist because he or she sees a potential for a pregnancy-related health concern or because a problem develops during the course of the pregnancy.

Our Hospital Medicine team is staffed with experienced internists, family medicine physicians and advance practice providers who are experts in the management and coordination of care of hospitalized patients. The IHA Hospital Medicine team cares for patients hospitalized at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Livingston, Chelsea and St. Mary Mercy Livonia. Our providers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and regularly care for hospitalized adult patients with complex needs. Our team members coordinate the involvement of other Specialist providers and Ancillary Services, communicating with patients, families and works in partnership with your primary care physician to ensure a smooth and effective follow up plan after discharge.

Neonatology or neonatal medicine is a subspecialty of pediatrics the specializes in care of newborn infants, especially the seriously ill or premature newborn. Our IHA Neonatology team is staffed by Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners that provide hospital based care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICUs) or Special Care Nursery. Our providers are in the hospital and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide treatment for breathing difficulties, birth defects, premature birth, feeding difficulties and many other conditions affecting newborn infants. Our IHA Neonatology team provides care for newborn infants at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Mary Mercy Livonia.

Pediatric Hospitalists are pediatricians who specialize in hospital medicine and newborn care. The IHA Pediatric Hospitalists care for patients at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Mary Mercy Livonia. Our providers are available 24 hours per day, seven days a week and regularly care for hospitalized children and newborns. The Pediatric Hospitalist team is well equipped to deal with the sometimes challenging behavioral and psychological effects on children who are sick and need to be hospitalized. The team will pay special attention to communication with your child’s primary care physician, that way the transition home and any follow up care needed can be easy and effective. Our Pediatric Hospitalists understand the coordination of care for acute disorders and newborn care, and are able to recognize and diagnose unusual disorders, anticipate problems and rapidly respond to crises or changes in a patient’s condition.
