Choosing the right school for your son or daughter is often seen as a difficult but crucial decision for parents. I am very pleased to commend to you Immanuel College, Bushey and guarantee you a warm welcome should you choose to visit us to see what it is that we have to offer. Immanuel is a highly successful, modern orthodox, co-educational, Independent Jewish day school, located in south-west Hertfordshire in an area which can genuinely be described as a leafy suburb, but within easy reach of north London. It currently has 700 pupils, including approximately 120 in the Prep School (which opened in 2011) and it has a thriving and growing Sixth Form. It is characterised by exceptional academic standards, outstanding pastoral care and a renowned programme of Jewish study which complements the demanding academic curriculum and the wide range of extra-curricular activities. The atmosphere at the College is one of happy, fulfilled young people, fully engaged in the life of the school community, aspirational and committed to their studies. We aim to help our students learn to succeed and find happiness far into the future, and to achieve this we have a skilled and caring staff who help individuals to be the best they can be. Relations between the pupils and the staff are open, warm and mutually supportive, characteristics which are also found in the wider Immanuel community of parents and alumni. We believe that our students should cultivate their individuality in the context of a strong team and community spirit and should be taught both leadership skills and how to join others to build successful enterprises. We work to ensure that young people in our care learn to inhabit and relish their Jewish identity as a familiar part of their everyday working, sporting and social selves, not as an after-thought separated from academic study or progress in the wider world. Moreover, we are providing an environment which contributes to Menschlichkeit, a moral maturity and Jewish righteousness where Immanuel students graduate from the College with a sense of justice, fairness, honesty and a considerate attitude to others as well as an understanding of their place in a multi-cultural and pluralistic society. We are proud of our academic results, our provision of art, music, drama and sport as well as our unforgettable school trips and visits. We are continuously developing our facilities, which now include a newly-refurbished library, a Sixth Form Art Studio, a new computer suite, a theatre, a fitness suite, a newly-designed dining room, state-of-the-art science laboratories and the Atar-Zwillenberg Beit HaKnesset, which is used for both formal and informal Jewish learning. Immanuel is uniquely placed at the intersection of the collegiate worlds of the elite HMC organisation and Jewish education. We have been frequently ranked in the top 60 independent schools in the country and we are famous for our students securing entry to the best courses at the best universities. We are entering a new and exciting phase of our development – the College only opened in 1990 – and we will continue to strive for the highest academic standards while maintaining our warm and caring community for which Immanuel is rightly renowned. The combination of a high-quality secular education and an undogmatic Jewish experience remains at the heart of the College’s vision and ethos. I do hope that you will want to visit us and experience the vibrancy and enthusiasm for learning that is at the heart of that ethos. I look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful school so that you can feel the Immanuel spirit for yourself. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

We have been frequently ranked in the top 60 independent schools in the

country and we are famous for our students securing entry to the best courses at the best universities.

Senior School Curriculum Immanuel offers a broad and flexible curriculum which promotes the intellectual, creative, physical and personal achievement of all pupils. Students are taught to think for themselves and work independently and a variety of teaching and learning styles are utilised to promote academic excellence combined with high levels of Jewish learning.

SettingThe needs of all students are accommodated, regardless of their ages and abilities. In Year 7, pupils are taught in ability groups in English, Mathematics, Science, Jewish Studies and Modern Hebrew which are determined by a combination of the entrance examination, base-line testing and prior knowledge and attainment. Sets are fluid and remain so throughout Key Stage 3, with students given the opportunity to move up or down as appropriate. The remainder of the Year 7 curriculum comprises French, History, Geography, IT, PE, Music, Art, Drama, Photography and PSHEE. Form time is also used to deliver key study and literacy skills with two weekly Section assemblies providing the opportunity to come together as a Year group.

In Year 8, Spanish is added and, in Year 9, the vast majority of students continue to learn three Modern Foreign Languages (French, Spanish and Modern Hebrew) although there are booster lessons available for a small number who may need to drop one of these. Students now follow single Sciences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics with the remainder of the Year 9 curriculum consisting of IT, PE, Music, Drama, Art and PSHEE.

At Key Stage 4, most students would be expected to

study a total of ten subjects: these are made up of the core elements of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (Double or Triple) and Jewish Studies plus three subjects from a choice of History, Geography, Spanish, French, Modern Hebrew, Computer Science, Art & Design, Photography, Biblical Hebrew, Drama, Electronics, Music and PE. Their timetable would also include PE, regardless of whether or not this had been selected as a GCSE subject, and PSHEE.

Enrichment beyond the classroomLearning within the classroom is carefully combined with the school’s extra-curricular programme and there is an extensive range of educational trips and activities including annual visits to Amsterdam in Year 7, Northern France in Year 8 and Israel in Year 9. GCSE students taking French or Spanish have the option of a visit to Strasbourg or Madrid, respectively, during the summer term of Year 10 and Sixth Form students are given the opportunity to visit sites of Jewish historical significance in Poland.

There are numerous other day trips which give students across the age range the opportunity to visit places of educational value; although these are organised on a more ad-hoc basis, in the past they have included Cadbury World (Year 9), the Globe Theatre (Year 8) and London Zoo (Year 7).

HomeworkAn extensive homework timetable exists for all Year groups. In Key Stage 3, students are expected to spend approximately twenty minutes per homework per night and typically have three subjects set each day. At Key Stage 4 this rises to approximately thirty minutes per subject per night. Homework tasks include reading, research, past-paper questions and evaluations and are designed to complement the learning that takes place in the classroom.
