• The children are active and engaged initially with a warm up task.

• Often this is at the tables, sometimes it is a song on the carpet.

Each unit starts with a Big Picture to give context to the learning and engage children.

Mathematics Mastery

The teacher will introduce star words and keyvocabulary. The language that children use is key to their understanding. After the star words, the teacher will introduce some new learning, which is followed by a talk task.

Place Value is key and the concept of regrouping is introduced in Year 1 with concrete manipulatives, mainly dienes.

Children are also taught to represent numbers and calculations pictorially as well as to interpret them. They then use their understanding to complete an independent task.
