The Grading Policy

Assessment DetailsA combination of authentic and standardized testing will be used to assess your knowledge. Standardized tests are only one measure of your knowledge. A broader and more reliable view of what a student can do is achieved through the inclusion of multiple types of assessments. Typical methods will include major tests, quizzes, writing assignments, projects, group participation, homework and class work, and oral presentations.

Grading System80% - tests and project-based assessments

20% - classwork, homework, and quizzes

Cheating and Plagiarism Policy

Students are expected to uphold the school’s standard of conduct relating to academic honesty. The guiding principle of academic integrity will be that all submitted work, examinations, reports and projects must be the student’s own work. Students will violate this policy if they

Represent the work of others as their own Use or obtain unauthorized assistance to complete an

assignment or test Give unauthorized assistance to another student

Violation of this policy will result in receiving a zero on the test, project, or assignment!

I will update you periodically on your grade. However, anytime you wish to see your average, you are welcome to come in during my planning period or after school and receive a printout. Don’t forget you may also check your grade from home!

Late WorkAbsences have a direct, negative effect on your grade; if you are not present in class, you are missing work and material that is difficult to make up. If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to come by the classroom and pick up missed assignments.

• Make-up tests may be given upon your return or scheduled for a later date. However, unless I notify you of a change, you have one week to make-up a missed test.

You must take an announced test even if absent the day before

It is at my discretion to accept late work for credit without an excused absence or participation in a school-related, excused activity.

Time Management Each day’s work differs from the next, and you will be engaged in senior-level work. This means you may occasionally have more than one project in process at times. This will require your higher-level thinking skills, creativity, and the ability to meet a deadline. Use a calendar and do not procrastinate! Manage your time wisely.

Turning in Work

The only places to turn in work are the back table and the appropriate wall pocket. Tests and other assignments will be placed on the back table. Make-up tests or assignments will be placed in the appropriate wall pocket. Do not place work in the teacher’s office, not on the teacher’s desk, not on the podium, and not in the teacher’s hand.

Classroom Guidelines and Expectations

1. BE ON TIME! Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell “tones”.

2. BE PREPARED! Bring all required materials to class daily and be ready to begin work when the tardy tone sounds.

3. PAY ATTENTION! When I am talking, I want and expect your undivided attention. Do not be a distraction to others by making noise or asking for supplies. Sleeping is not expected nor permitted.

Classroom Guidelines and Expectations

4. BE INFORMED! You are welcome to bring water or drinks to class, but you may not bring any food into the classroom.

5. BE IN CONTROL! Take care of all school property. Leave cell phones off or in your car because I will take them up if they are in view or in use during my class. Profanity will not be tolerated and will result in an office visit.

6. ACT YOUR AGE! When in doubt, behave as a high school senior should.

Course Overview

Twelfth grade English offers a survey of British literature beginning in the year 449. Students at this grade level are also expected to conduct research and present findings. Students will study a variety of genres and writing styles by outstanding British writers. Students taking this course will be expected to read carefully and actively, and to make observations about the selections being studied. In addition to studying literature, writing, research, and communication skills will be an integral part of English 12.
