ORIENTATIONThisOnlineOrientationisdesignedspecificallyforthefirst-timefreshmanortransferstudent.Ourgoal
istoprovideinformationtoeasethetransitionintocollegelifeandintroducethecollege’sgoals,mission,policies,admissionrequirements,andprogramsof study.
TheDivisionofStudentEngagementandacommitteemadeupofaselectgroupofmatriculatingsophomorecollegestudentsandfacultyandstaffrepresentativesassisttheenteringFreshmanandTransferstudentsinbecomingacquaintedwithinstitutionaladministrators,faculty,staff,andcampusprogramsandservices.Orientationmaterialsareprovidedtoallentering freshmen.Entranceexaminations,campustours,socialevents,fees,lecture-discussionmeetings,andregistration,aresomeoftheactivitiesconductedduringtheperiod.Contentsofthecollege’scatalogandStudentHandbookarealsopresentedduringtheSummerOrientation.
Anorientationclassisconductedforonesemesterasapartoftheregularcollegecurriculum.Collegerules,regulations,andpoliciesarereviewedalongwithotheractivitiesdesignedtohelpfreshmenadjusttocollege.Studenthandbooksandcollegecatalogsaredistributedandreviewed.
Note:Anon-campusorientationcontainingparalleledmaterialcanbeattendedbypotentialstudents(onsiteandoffsite)ofCoahomaCommunityCollegeduringthesummerundertheauspiceoftheDivisionofStudentEngagement.Thislinkisdesignedforthespecificpurposeofprovidingmaterialtointerestedpotentialstudentsthatcouldnotattendtheon- campusorientationactivities.
Historyofthe CollegeCoahomaCountyAgriculturalHighSchoolwasestablishedin1924becomingthefirstagriculturalhighschoolinMississippifor
Negroesundertheexisting"separatebutequal"doctrine.Thejuniorcollegecurriculumwasaddedin1949,andthenameoftheinstitutionwaschangedtoCoahomaJuniorCollegeandAgriculturalHigh School.
Duringthefirsttwoyears(1949-1950),thejuniorcollegeprogramwasconductedbyonefull-timecollegedirector/teacherandasufficientnumberofpart-timeteachersfromthehighschooldivision.Afull-timedeanandcollegefacultywereemployedinthethirdyearofoperation.Duringthefirstyearofoperation(1949),CoahomaJuniorCollegewassupportedentirelybycountyfunds.In1950,CoahomaJuniorCollegebecamethefirsteducationalinstitutionforNegroestobeincludedinMississippi'ssystemofpublicjuniorcollegesandtobeeligibletoshareinfundsappropriatedbytheMississippi Legislatureforthesupportofpublicjuniorcolleges.Othercountiesalsobegantosupportthejuniorcollege,includingBolivar,Quitmanand Sunflower.
In1965,CoahomaJuniorCollegeopeneditsdoorstoallstudentsregardlessofrace,color,sex,nationalorigin,ordisability.Duringitshistory,CoahomaCommunityCollegeandAgriculturalHighSchoolhasbeenheadedbyeightsuperintendentsandfour
presidents:M.L.Strange,1924-25;J.M.Mosley,1924-29;J.W.Addison,1929-37;J.B.Wright,1937-45;B.F.McLaurin,1945-66;J.E.Miller,1966-79;McKinleyC.Martin,1980-92;andtheincumbentVivianM.Presley,1992toJune2013.Withherappointmentassuperintendent/presidentonJanuary6,1992,Dr.VivianPresleybecamethefirstfemaletoheadCoahomaCommunityCollegeandAgriculturalHighSchoolandthefirstwomantoheadacommunity/juniorcollegeinthestateofMississippi.Dr.ValmadgeTownerwasnamedCoahomaCommunityCollege’sfifthpresidenttojoinanesteemedgroupofcollegeleaders,July 2013.
WiththeapprovaloftheBoardofTrusteesofCoahomaJuniorCollegeandtheStateBoardforCommunityandJuniorColleges,CoahomaJuniorCollege'snamewaschangedtoCoahomaCommunityCollege,effectiveJuly1, 1989.
Inthespringof1995,aftermanyyearsofnothavinganofficialdistrict,abillwasintroducedtoandpassedbytheMississippiLegislatureandsignedbytheGovernorKirkFordicegivingCoahomaCommunityCollegeadistrict.EffectiveJuly1,1995,theCoahomaCommunityCollegedistrictbecameBolivar,Coahoma,Quitman,Tallahatchie,andTunica Counties.

We are located and deeply rooted in the heart of the Mississippi Delta in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Ourrich history and location includes Highway 61 (named Blues Highway because it runs through theDelta where the blues was born) and crosses Highway 49 in Clarksdale. This famous crossroads iswhere, according to legend, Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil in exchange formastery of the blues.

FacilitiesTheJ.W.ADDISONADMINISTRATIONBUILDINGwasoriginallyconstructedin1963andenlargedin1969.Thisbuildingservedasthecenterfortheadministrativeactivitiesofthecampusuntil2011.ItcurrentlyhousestheofficesoftheDeanforAcademicAffairs,EducationalOutreachandotheradministrativeofficesfortheDivisionofAcademicAffairs.ItisnamedinhonorofJ.W.Addison,aformersuperintendentofCoahomaAgriculturalHighSchool.
TheZEEA.BARRONSTUDENTUNIONwasconstructedin1975.Itisnamedinhonorofoneoftheschool'sformerorganizers,ZeeA.Barron.TheStudentUnionhousesmanydiverseofficesandactivitycenters.ThisfacilityprovidesofficesforDirectorofEnrollmentManagementandStudentEngagement,theAssistantDirectorofEnrollmentManagementandStudentEngagement,theCoordinatorofStudentActivities,StudentGovernmentAssociation,andtheCoordinatorofHousing.Inaddition,thisfacilityprovidesspaceforastudentlounge,thecampuscafeteria/grill,meetingrooms(includingtheMagnoliaRoom),thefacultydiningarea,andtheTigers'gameroom.
THEBLACKBURNANNEXisnamedinhonorofaformerdirectoroftheDivisionofVocationalandTechnicalEducation,SamuelBlackburn.Thisbuildinghousestheinstitution'smaintenancedepartmentandhighschoolautomotivemechanicshop.
THEROSIEBROWNSANDYBAYOUBUILDINGwasoriginallyconstructedonthecampusasacountyelementaryschoolandwasconsideredpartoftheCoahomaCommunityCollegeandAgriculturalHighSchoolComplex.Becauseofdecliningenrollment,theschoolwasclosed.In1976,thecollegepurchasedthefacilitytobeusedasaclassroombuilding. Thisbuildingwasdedicatedinmemoryofoneofitsmostoutstandingteachersandadministrators,RosieBrown.ThebuildingiscurrentlyusedbythecollegeandCoahomaAgriculturalHighSchool.
THECAINVOCATIONALBUILDINGwasnamedinhonoroftwodedicatedinstructors,JosephandHettieCain.Thefacilityhouseshighschoolbuildingtrades,andatechnologyclassroom.Thebuildingwasrenovatedin1991.
THE CONSUELLA CARTERMUSICHALL, constructed in 1967, is named in honor of Consuella Carter, a formerbanddirectorandmusicinstructoratCoahomaCommunityCollege.ThisbuildinghousestheBandDirector’soffice,aclassroom,arehearsalhall,andstoragespace.
FacilitiesTHECHRISTINEJ.CURRYHALLwasconstructedin1965asabusinessbuilding.Anadditionwasmadein1969.IthousestheBusinessandComputerInformationSystemsDepartmentandtheHealth,PhysicalEducationandRecreationDepartment.ItisnamedinhonorofChristineJ.Curry,along-timedepartmentheadoftheBusinessDepartment.
THEDICKERSON-JOHNSONLIBRARYANDLEARNINGRESOURCESCENTERisnamedinhonoroftheinstitution'sfirstlibrarian,Ethel V. Dickerson, and Lillian Rogers Johnson, a former organizer of the College. The Library occupies the secondandthirdfloorsofthebuildingwiththeReferenceSectionandcomputerlabonthesecondfloorandtheGeneralCollection,MainReadingRoom,BlackHeritageCollectionMediaCenterresidingonthethirdfloor.
THELEEFLOWERSCAREER/TECHNICALBUILDING,originallyconstructedin1962,isnamedinhonorofLeeFlowers,adeceasedinstructorinthebuildingtrades.Itoriginallyhousedclassrooms,shops,andlaboratoriesforbrickmasonry.Afterthebuildingsustainedheavydamagesfromatornadoin1984,itwascompletelyrenovatedin1985toatwo-storystructure.ThefirstfloorcurrentlyhousestheBarbering&CosmetologyPrograms.ThesecondfloorhousesBusinessandOfficeSystemsTechnologyandChildCareTechnologyPrograms.
THEFRIENDSRESIDENCEHALL,athree-storyfacility,wasconstructedin1983.Itprovideshousingfor122malestudentsandincludeslounges,lobbies,andkitchenettes.Thebuildingwasrenovatedin2006.
THEB.F.MCLAURINVOCATIONAL-TECHNICALCENTER,constructedin1969,isnamedinhonoroftheschool'sfirstpresident,B.F.McLaurin.ThisbuildinghousesfacilitiesforHotelRestaurantManagementTechnology,IndustrialMaintenanceTechnology,ResidentialCarpentry,WeldingTechnology,andvariousofficesincludingtheofficesoftheVicePresidentandDeanofCareer-TechnicalEducation.
THE SEZZIEMCLAURINRESIDENCEHALL, constructed during the 1983-84school year, was named in honor of thedeceasedwifeofthefirstpresident.Thistwo-storybuildingprovideshousingfor52femalestudents.Italsoincludeslounges,lobbies,and kitchenettes.
THEJAMESE.MILLERSTADIUM,constructedin1979,isnamedinhonorofthesecondpresident,JamesE.Miller.Thisstadium,whichishomefieldoftheCoahomaCommunityCollegeTigers,hasaseatingcapacityof2,500.TheJamesE.MillerStadiumwascompletelyrenovatedduringthe1997-98academicschoolyearwiththeadditionofanew1,678squarefeetentrance building thatprovides space for ticket sales, concession, and restroomfacilities.
THEMARIONM.REIDGYMNASIUM,constructedin1960,isnamedinhonorofadeceasedfacultymemberandregistrar,MarionM.Reid.Thisfacilityisusedforathleticactivities,assemblies,andclassroominstruction.Itwasrenovatedin1986,1989,and2007.
FacilitiesTHETRUSTEECENTERFORPHYSICALOPERATIONS,constructedin1985,isnamedinhonorofallpresentandpastmembersofthe Board of Trustees. It houses Shipping and Receiving, Physical Plant, and a busshop.
THEMARYG.WHITESIDEACADEMICHALL,constructedin1958,isnamedinhonorofMaryG.Whiteside,adeceasedfacultymemberwhowasalsoaregistrarandacademicdean.ThisbuildinghashadtenrenovationsovertheyearsandcurrentlyhousestheacademicdepartmentsofSocialSciences,EducationandPsychology;EnglishandForeignLanguage;and Math and Science and theWhiteside Hall LectureRoom.
THE IRMAGAMBRELL CHILDCARECENTER is named in honor of IrmaGambrell, a long-time employee and loyalsupporter of the college. The facility was originally constructed to house vocational programs for the high school. Afterthebuildingsustainedheavydamagesfromatornadoin1984,itwascompletelyrenovatedin1988tohousetheChildCareTrainingCenter.
THEBARRON-MILLERCENTERFORFINEARTS,originallyconstructedin1965asasmallgymnasiumforthehighschool, was named in honor ofthe school's first full-timemusic director and the second president.When originallyconstructed,thefacilitywasusedforphysicaleducationclasses,smallassemblies,andbasketballpractice.Thefacilitywasrenovatedin1990-1991tobeusedprimarilybyCoahomaCommunityCollegeasafacilityforartclasses,performingarts,andsmallassemblies.Thetwo-storybuildinghousestheHenryDorseyStudio,theThomasA.RichardsonStudio,theGeorgiaA.LewisTheater,theEddieMaeJacksonDramaLaboratory,andtheMiriamGreenWriterandArtistLaboratory.
THEMARVINF. SIGMONJR. CAREER/TECHNICAL BUILDING, constructed in 1978,was named in honor ofMarvinSigmon,Jr.,whoservedontheBoardofTrusteesforCoahomaCommunityCollegeandAgriculturalHighSchoolformorethan30yearsandaspresidentoftheBoardofTrusteesforanumberofyears.ThefacilityhousestheCareer-Technicaloffices, Collision Repair Technology, and CulinaryArts.
The NEDGATHWRIGHTWORKFORCEDEVELOPMENTCENTERwas originally built in 1992and expanded in 1997.The facilitywasrenamed in honor ofalumnus, former instructor and board member in 2015.The facility is located in the Coahoma County Industrial ParkonHighway49S.TheCenterhousesCustomizedTrainingforBusinessandIndustry,WorkforceTrainingandAdultBasicEducation/GEDclasses.
THEPINNACLEwasconstructedin1992-1993.Thismodern34,474squarefootfacilityhousesfourclassrooms,severaloffices,athleticdressingrooms,apermanentstagearea,andanarenafloorareaforsportingevents.Thearenaseatsmorethan4,000,housesapressboxthatdoublesasacontrolandsoundbooth,andavideo-tapingarea.ThebuildingisalsousedforculturaleventsfortheCollegeandthecommunity.
THEPRESIDENT'SHOME,constructedin1997,islocatedonthesouthendofthecampuseastofFriarsPointRoad.It is a beautiful one-story frame building with 4,252square feet of livingspace.
FacilitiesTHEGEORGEW.MOORERESIDENCEHALL,constructedin2002,isamoderntwo-storymen'sdormitory.Ithouses120studentsandishandicapaccessible.ThisbuildingwasnamedinhonorofthelateGeorgeW.Moore,aformercollegeinstructorand administrator.
THEGEORGEA.GREENATHLETICFIELDHOUSE,constructedin2002,isnamedinhonorandinmemoryofthelateformerfootballcoach,GeorgeA.Green.Thismodemfacilityhastwodressingrooms,astate-of-the-artweightroom,ameetingroom,threeoffices,areceptionarea,andalaundryroom.
FRANKW.GAMBRELL,JR.STUDENTAFFAIRSMULTI-COMPLEXBUILDING,constructedin2003,isastate- of-the-artfacilitythathouses,studenthealthservices,studentlaundry,studentmail,andtheFitnessandWellness Center.
THEROBERTG.“BRICK”MASONHEALTHSCIENCESBUILDING,constructedin2007,isa26,000square-footfacilitythathousestheRespiratoryCare,thePracticalNursing,theAssociateDegreeinNursing,PolysomnographyCertificateandAssociateDegreePrograms,ParamedicCertificateandAssociateDegreeProgramsandothershort-termhealthcaretrainingprograms.Thisbuildingislocatedoff-campusat901OhioSt.Clarksdale,MS 38614.
EDDIEC.SMITHSPORTSPLEX,constructedin2005,isnamedinhonorofadedicatedscienceinstructorandpublicservant, Eddie C. Smith. The facility is located in the southeast corner of the campus. This beautiful facility was constructed tomeet state and national design requirements. It consists of a baseball field, a softball field, and an indoor facility that providesapproximately 875 square feet for concessions, restrooms, sports activity announcements, and storage.
CHARLESF.REIDSPONSOREDPROGRAMSBUILDING,constructedin1960,wasoriginallyusedasafemaledormitoryandwasreferredasthe―Women’sDormitory.Intheearlynineties,thenamewaschangedto―TINYTIGERSǁandthebuildingwasusedasadaycarecenter.In2004,thebuildingwasrenamed―SponsoredPrograms.In2008,thenamewasexpandedinordertohonoraformerdeanofacademics,Mr.CharlesF.Reid.Currently,thisbuildinghousessponsoredprogramsandotherprograms/activitieswhenspaceisavailable.
THEMCKINLEYC.MARTINRESIDENCEHALL,constructedin2014,isamoderntwostorywomen'sdormitory.Ithouses56studentsandishandicapaccessible.Itofferssuitestylelivinginanapartmentstyle.Thebuildingwasnamedinhonorofthe3rdPresidentoftheCollege,Dr.MckinleyC.Martin.
