Welcome to this weekrsquos newsletter

I would like to start with a big thank you to everyone who has made such positive comments about our Newsletters the continued enthusiasm to engage and contribute really helps us to keep our community working together We are looking at the possibility of continuing on our return to school as a monthly publication It is a perfect opportunity to show off the efforts of our students both inside and outside school and a great way to make sure we can keep parents informed

I have very much enjoyed reading the articles that have been written by our students their positive outlook and creativity is inspiring Please keep sending these in to us as they make a fabulous addition to our Newsletter

As we are moving out of the tighter lockdown restrictions and the country is beginning to open up we are left reflecting on the strange times that we have lived through It feels like a long time ago that we were facing empty shelves and we were relishing our one walk a day

It is important that we take time to discuss our triumphs as well as our troubles in order to process events that have taken place

We have been spending unusual amounts of time with our families and alone this in itself can mean a loss of perspective that can impact on our family relationships Please do reach out if your child is having

difficulties as we are keen to support where we can

Mrs Holkham this week moves on to the Learning Journeyrsquos of our Year 8s This is useful for our Year 7s to know what is to come and for Year 8 to check they have achieved what they need to so that they are ldquoYear 9 readyrdquo

Knowing the end goal will help retain a sense of purpose as most of us continue to work remotely Mrs Ross-Smith talks this week about how to keep personal motivation during this extended period of time It must be noted that whilst we all enjoy recognition of our efforts and praise that intrinsic motivation is what will really drive things forward Everyone needs to reflect from time to time on the purpose and the impacts of what they are doing getting an all-important perspective of how our actions now will affect what happens next

Also in this newsletter Mrs Ross-Smith includes a section for parents to support efforts to keep going in even the most challenging times she suggests approaches that you may wish to try to express a point and set boundaries but not to the detriment to the relationship with your child

Have a lovely week stay safeUntil next week

Best wishes

Dear All

I hope that you and your families are all well As we now approach the end of this rather strange academic year I hope that you are continuing to use your time at home as productively and positively as possible

Firstly it has been really good seeing so many Year 10 and Year 12 students back in school and I do hope that the immersion days are proving to be both helpful and supportive (It has certainly been fantastic to have a buzz around the school again) The immersion days are certainly helping us to think about how we might be able to operate in September in the hope that we will be able to welcome even more students back to school for the start of the new academic year

With this in mind you might be aware that we are awaiting another important announcement from the Government at the end of this week It is in this announcement that we are hoping to find out about the Governmentrsquos plans for the GCSE and post-16 results days in the summer in addition to the plans for a wider reopening of schools for September In the meantime we continue to think about various different scenarios and make tentative plans for the weeks ahead

You are hopefully aware that we have recently sent home another parentstudent lsquoWork and Learning from Home Surveyrsquo for you to complete Please do take some time to complete this short survey as your feedback really does help us in reviewing and improving the work that we are setting for you to complete The survey closes at the end of today (Wednesday 1st July)

As I said in my last newsletter message to you whilst I hope that you are able to start enjoying the newfound freedoms from the aspects of lockdown that are now being eased it is obviously important that we all still adhere to the official guidance from the Government particularly in terms of social distancing and maintaining good levels of hygiene

I hope that you enjoy reading through this weekrsquos edition of your college newsletter I continue to enjoy reading all of the newsletters each week and continue to be amazed by all of the wonderful activities that so many of you have been undertaking I also wanted to congratulate again all of those who have so far been awarded certificates in recognition of your hard work and achievements Do maintain your efforts over the final few weeks because we continue to be very keen to recognise what you have been doing and to share and celebrate your successes

Do continue to take good care of yourselves

Best wishes

WELLBEINGWELLBEING

Hello again

Week 5 - where is the time going

We are on countdown as Saturday is when we collect Ernie Barney is going to be in for a shock I will share next week the photo of them meeting for the first time

I really enjoyed being able to speak to some of you last week I am trying to call round and speak to as many as I can when I am in on Thursdays I do know how hard it is to keep up with your home learning especially with the temptation of being out in the sunshine and I just want you to know how proud we are of how well so many of you are doing at keeping on top of your work and staying in touch with your teachers Remember even if you do not finish a piece of work please do upload it Your teacher can then give you feedback and knows you have attempted it Having a go and trying is far more important than getting it right Remember getting things wrong is the best way to learn

I hope you are also all finding time to pursue interests and hobbies and perhaps finding new ones Here is a link to a video on BBC

about a fantastic street artist David Zinn He creates chalk drawings on pavements using cracks in the pavement and steps as part of the art He is on a mission to show how anyone can draw without the need for any expensive equipment or even paper Seeing things like this can really inspire us to have a go

I can see from the fantastic photos many of you have shared you are doing lots of creative things from baking to photography and art Keep it up and keep sharing your photos We love seeing them and want to include as many as we can in our newsletter

I hope you all have a good week and keep learning

Take care

Mrs Ross-Smith

Dear ParentCarers

Having spoken to many of you I am aware it is becoming increasingly hard to keep your young people motivated Being away from school and the face to face contact of their teachers as well as the daily socialising with their friends for such a long time makes it hard for them to remain enthusiastic and interested in their learning We are so impressed with how well most of them have done however I think it is fair to say all have had a dip at some point

When encouraging them to keep going there are strategies that educational psychologists recommend

Routine (But with a choice) ndash having a daily regular routine helps keep a structure to the day and gives a sense of purpose This does not have to be the same as the normal school day but needs to have a regular start and end time for school work with breaks and clear rules for getting up and bedtime Giving the students some choice as to how they organise their time will help engage them Some may benefit from having a later start than they do at school others may want to do all their work in the morning and have the afternoon to follow their own interests or hobbies and some may like to stick to their school timetable This may take trial and error as they may not know themselves what works for them but it is worth persevering as once they find a routine that works for them they will find it so much easier to stay motivated By having a routine they can also then enjoy weekends and holidays as they are different rather than every day merging into one

Praise (of the right kind) ndash praise motivates all of us We all like to be told we are doing well It is however important to be careful what we are praising The temptation is to only praise the end result eg coming 1st2nd or 3rd or getting a top grade This is obviously important but praise of how a student gets to that end result ie the hard work and effort they put in is what helps them to work hard and persevere One of the strategies to achieve the Growth mindset I spoke about in our Newsletter in week 3 of this term is to praise effort over results eg

I can see that yoursquove worked very hardThe reason for going to school is to learn not just to do well in testsNot giving up and keep practicing every day are your best traits

Relevancendash understanding why they are being asked to study certain subjects and topics can help them engage with it If they see no point to something they are more likely to disengage as indeed are we all Finding a reason why they are being asked to do something is not always easy however if you can explain that in learning certain things they are acquiring skills they will then use for the rest of their life this can help

Maths - working out the area of a room will help anyone doing DIY to work out how much carpet or wallpaper they need when decorating or how much something has been reduced in a sale

English - to look anything up on Google they need to be able to read and write The better able they are to express themselves the better they will be at explaining things to others eg a teacher their friends or to present themselves at their best eg when applying and interviewing for college or a job

Science - helps them learn to question challenge and problem solve all skills which will help them become successful in whatever work they do

Do also encourage them to pursue interests or hobbies they already have or actively try and find new things for them to be interested in Be it art cooking sport or dance it will encourage them to still be curious and interested in something and they will be learning Keeping in the habit of learning is key

Relationships ndash encouraging them to keep in touch with friends but also teachers Teachers can be messaged through Google classroom as can I College office staff through the I College classroom or email I am really enjoying the email chats I am having with some of our students We love hearing their news and seeing photos as it helps us all stay in touch If they are too shy to send messages or photos themselves please do send on their behalf We are really missing them all and canrsquot wait until our I College community is back together in real time

All of these things can help with motivation however if they really have switched off do not panic Please get in touch so we can see if there is anything we can do to help and support I am now in every Thursday should you wish to speak to me

STUDY SKILLS STUDY SKILLS YEAR 8 PATHWAYYEAR 8 PATHWAYMRS R HOLKHAMpt i-college + maths teacher

Over the next few newsletters I am discussing the learning opportunities and experiences which you have or will encounter during your time at Homewood

Below is the learning path which a Year 8 student would normally follow during their second year at Homewood This academic year hasnrsquot been normal nonetheless I am so proud how well the Year 8rsquos have achieved this year and responded to their lockdown work

During the beginning of the Year 8 you will be offered an opportunity to apply to become a buddy for a Year 7 student to support them during their first year of school This experience will improve your leadership and communication skills If you wish to be a buddy for a Year 7 student please email olinghomewoodkentschuk with a short paragraph explaining why you would be good for the role

Through Year 8 we will continue to work with you to improve your learning skills especially organisation skills and your resilience You will have more confidence in Year 8 compared to Year 7 as you will know the school and the staff around you so it is important to keep yourself organised especially in your home learning Your teachers and form tutors will support you with different organisational techniques and never worry about asking for help if you need it In

Year 8 you may find that the content in your lessons will be more difficult and you may be challenged further than you were in Year 7 You may excel with the additional challenge however there may be times when your resilience will be low Your subject teachers will support you by teaching you learning skills to become a reflective learner and more resilient Near the end of Year 8 we will invite all of your parents and guardians into school for the festival of learning so you can display the amazing work which you have achieved while being in Year 8 It is an important opportunity to show how far you have come and how much of a reflective and resilient learner you have become

A big part of Year 8 is choosing the learning pathway which you will take in Year 9 Early in the year you and your parents will be invited to attend a choices evening where you can speak to all of the teachers which run the courses in Year 9 There will be a range of subjects which you have to learn and there will be a list of subjects which you will be able to choose from All of this information will be shared with you during assemblies and the choices evening We will be able to support you through selecting your choices so donrsquot worry about asking me for help

A MESSAGE FROM A MESSAGE FROM MR SINGLEMR SINGLE

MR J SINGLEprincipal

Best wishes

Mr Single
