Welcome to Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church

As people made on in the waters of baptism, we believe our faith is strengthened by diversity in a community that welcomes all people. We celebrate God’s unconditional love and

respond joyfully to your presence here.

All are welcome. You are welcome.

Here are some notes about our church and our facility that you might find helpful.

Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to men’s and women’s rooms there is a family room with a changing table.

The Count-Me-In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. You can make special prayer requests on the back of the form, as well as indicate interest in special events and volunteer opportunities. Place the form in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service.

The Grace Station is a Sunday morning outreach of the church office. Office Manager Christina Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to provide information about our church and to receive information from you about changes in contact information, prayer requests, or news about illnesses or hospitalizations. You will also find current newsletters and program information

there. Look for the check-in desk in the church gathering area.

A staffed nursery is available for children from ages birth through 5 years on this same floor, down past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents return to the nursery to gather their children before the communion meal so they can come to the table together. An usher will be glad to direct you.

If you prefer to have your child in worship with you, but are worried they might disturb the service, we have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You can hear and see much of the service from there.

For older children in worship, we offer busy bags (found on the wooden coat tree in the narthex) and activity pages (found next to the basket of worship bulletins).

Check us out at the parish website www.prlc.org for more information about Phinney – our common life, ministries and many opportunities for service and faith formation. You can also find us on Facebook: “Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Community.”

We worship every Sunday in the summer at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Our fall worship

schedule begins on September 16, 2018, with worship at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m.

Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church is a Reconciling in Christ congregation.

ELW #881 Let All Things Now Living GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray.

(silence)

Ever-loving God, your Son gives himself as living bread for the life of the world. Fill us with such a knowledge of his presence that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life to serve you continually, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

WORD FIRST LESSON: PROVERBS 9:1-6

Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, “You that are simple, turn in here!”

4

To those without sense she says, “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight.”

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 34:9-14

Fear the LORD, you saints | of the LORD, for those who fear the | LORD lack nothing. The lions are in want and | suffer hunger, but those who seek the LORD lack nothing | that is good. Come, children, and lis- | ten to me; I will teach you reverence | for the LORD. Who among you takes plea- | sure in life and desires long life to en- | joy prosperity? Keep your | tongue from evil and your lips from | lying words. Turn from evil | and do good; seek peace | and pursue it.

SECOND LESSON: EPHESIANS 5:15-20

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: JOHN 6:51-58

The Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.

[Jesus said,] “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Gracious God, Hear our prayer.

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST PARISH CONCERNS

MEAL PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND OFFERING OF GIFTS

O Salutaris Hostia Ēriks Ešenvalds

O Salutaris Hostia Quae caeli pandis ostium: Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria. Amen.

O saving Victim, opening wide The gate of heaven to all us below: Our foes press on from every side; Thine aid supply, Thy strength bestow. To Thy great Name be endless praise, Immortal Godhead, One in Three! O grant us endless length of days With Thee in our true country. Amen

OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray.

(silence)

God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen.

7

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy God, our Bread of Life, our Table, and our Food, you created a world in which all might be satisfied by your abundance.

You dined with Abraham and Sarah, promising them life and fed your people Israel with manna from heaven.

8

You sent your Son, Jesus, to eat with sinners and to become bread for all the world.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Together as the body of Christ we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

With this bread and cup we remember Jesus’ life lived for others and his death and resurrection as we await his coming again to share with us the everlasting

feast.

Send your Holy Spirit upon these your gifts and all who share this heavenly food.

Feed us with yourself, warm our hearts, strengthen us to serve all in hunger and want, and by this bread and cup make of us the body of Christ.

Through Christ all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE MEAL

The Presider breaks the bread in silence and welcomes the assembly to the meal.

9

SHARING BREAD AND CUP We welcome all who desire to share in the gift of Christ’s mercy to join us for the communion meal. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers to gather around the table at the rails. Drink from the large cup of red wine or the smaller cup of white grape juice, or dip the bread into the cup before receiving. Gluten-free bread is available upon request. Those who do not commune are welcome to come for a blessing.

A minister is available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for

healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or

someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you.

COMMUNION HYMNS ELW #856 How Great Thou Art ELW #542 O Living Bread from Heaven ELW #822 Oh, Sing to the Lord

10

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Let us pray.

(silence)

Almighty God, you provide the true bread from heaven, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant that we who have received the Sacrament of his body and blood may abide in him and he in us, that we may be filled with the power of his endless life, now and forever. Amen.

SENDING COMMENDATION FOR MARGARET “SIS” DAKAN COMMENTS SONG

O Day Full of Grace 1) O day full of grace that now we see appearing on earth's horizon, bring light from our God that we may be abundant in joy this season. God, shine for us now in this dark place; your name on our hearts emblazon.

Ministers recess to the font. READING FROM 1 JOHN 3:1-2

PRAYER OF COMMENDATION

Let us commend Margaret to the mercy of God, our maker and redeemer.

(Silence is kept.)

11

3) Yea, were ev'ry tree endowed with speech, and were ev'ry leaflet singing,

they never with praise God's worth could reach,

though earth with their praise were ringing. Who fully could praise the Light of life who light to our souls is bringing?

5) When we on that final journey go that Christ is for us preparing, we'll gather in song, our hearts aglow, all joy of the heavens sharing, and there we will join God's endless praise with angels and saints adoring.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Margaret. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

BLESSING

The Body of Christ was given for you, now you have become the Body of Christ, given for the world. The blessing of almighty God, Father, Son (+) and Holy Spirit be with you now and remain with you always. Amen.

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Lutheran World Relief Responds to Indonesian Earthquake

Over the past two weeks, the island of Lombok, in Idonesia, has experienced nearly 500

earthquakes. More than 300 people have been killed, more than 1,000 injured, nearly 17,000

homes have been damaged and hospitals, bridges, schools and office buildings have all been

severely damaged or destroyed. Your gift to Lutheran World Relief reaches out to the people of

TONIGHT AT 6:30PM: Join us for a Special Sunday Stroll!

Every Sunday evening this summer, a group of 10-15 Phinney members and friends has

gathered for friendly conversation while taking walks around different neighborhoods, starting

and ending in different parks featured in Linnea Westerlind’s Discovering Seattle Parks: A

Local’s Guide. Over 25 people of all ages have participated (along with five different dogs!).

All are welcome to join us for one or both of our final two walks of this series. Tonight,

August 19, we will be gathering at the Center for Urban Horticulture (3501 NE 41st St)

courtyard (in the middle of the building-walk straight through from the parking lot) at a special

start time of 6:30pm. Larry Howard, husband of Pastor Nancy Winder, will be leading us on a

tour of the Lake Union Natural Area in the Laurelhurst neighborhood (near University Village).

The Winder/Howards have graciously invited us for dessert after the guided walk at their home

a few blocks away.

Children are welcome, and please feel free to invite your non-Phinney family and friends.

Please leave your dog home for this walk, as we want to be gentle with the natural area we’ll be

walking through (and the Winder/Howard home!).

Our final walk of this series will bring us back to the site of our first walk—Sunset Hill Park in

Ballard—next Sunday, August 16 at 7:00pm. Please RSVP or send questions to Don Boelter

([email protected], 206-276-4687).

Farewell to Vicar Pam Gompf on Aug 26

Over the past year, Vicar Pam Gompf has been a gift to our PRLC community, sharing her

myriad gifts, good humor and inspiring sermons with us. Her time here is coming to a close at

the end of August, and we would like to send her off with blessings into the bright future God

has for her. Please join us in the fellowship hall on August 26th after the second service

17

(beginning at 11:30am) for refreshments. There will be a basket available for cards. We look

forward to seeing you there!

Block Party Volunteers Needed

The Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Block Party will take place on our front lawn on Sunday,

September 9, from 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. We’re kicking off the fall with this fun event for all ages.

Our hope is to create a space for PRLC members to get to know one another, our neighbors,

and our Child Development Center families better. There will be food, music, games, a bouncy

house, a service project, and more. Please mark your calendars, spread the word, and mark the

Count Me In form if you can help. We need volunteers for set-up, clean-up, yard games, and

food.

Vacation Bible School Art

A heartfelt thanks to all the boys and girls who loaned their art from Vacation Bible School in

June so it could be displayed in the Narthex. It is now available at the Grace Station for you to

collect and take home. There are also copies of some photos that were taken at VBS. You are

welcome to take one of those if you wish.

Tower Maintenance Project Update

Thank you to all who have so positively responded to our appeal for funding the needed

maintenance project of the PRLC tower and some of the most weather-worn masonry! As most

of you may have heard by now, we are scheduled for repairs, cleaning and sealing work to be

done at some point in September, hopefully while our dry weather hangs around.

To date the office has received donations and pledges totaling over $56,000! This represents

over 2/3 of the anticipated cost. We are still gladly accepting your designated gifts, however,

which will allow us to retain more of the reserves in the Building and in the Maintenance

Reserve Fund, for other projects. Just write “Tower Campaign” in the memo line. You can also

do a one-time donation by credit card by visiting our website, and designate it to the Building

Fund.

A special tip for Thrivent members: If you like, you could request that your “choice dollars” are

sent to PRLC. Just let me know that you would like these funds to go to the Tower Campaign.

Every dollar counts!

New Organist for PRLC

Jeffrey Cooper has accepted the call to serve as Phinney’s organist. Jeffrey and his wife, Anna

and their children Elizabeth and Ingrid, currently live in Houston, Texas, where he recently

completed a Doctor Music Arts degree at the University of Houston. Jeffrey also studied at

18

California State University, Chico, and the University of Notre Dame. He has been involved in

the ministry of music for years and in a variety of church settings. Jeffrey’s first Sunday with us

with be December 2nd, the First Sunday in Advent.

Aurora Commons Meal Team Invites You to Participate

counselors who provide therapy in a variety of settings for a variety of needs. One such office is lo-

cated in our building, with Counselor Rosemary Raynaud providing therapy on an appointment

basis. Learn more: check out Lutheran Counseling Network at www.lutherancounseling.net. You

can also reach Rosemary by phone at 206-364-1046, ext. 3.
