Practicing Public Speaking• Because elocution is a big part of rhetoric, we are

going to practice speaking to the class.• Brainstorm something unique, interesting or

unusual to say about yourself. Here are some ideas:– What is the biggest adventure you’ve ever experienced?– What are you “famous” for?– What did you do this summer?– What would you say if you met your future self?

• Each student should begin by greeting the class and stating their name!

What is rhetoric?Rhetoric is the study of effective speaking and writing and

the art of persuasion.

We’re going to study rhetoric in an effort to be better writers and speakers. We’ll also discuss the importance of being skilled rhetors

as Christians!

• One 2 inch binder with side pockets (or a 2-pocket folder placed inside)

• Dividers/dividing tabs

• Loose-leaf paper (college ruled preferred)

• Pens/pencils

• Red pen

• Highlighter (any color)

• Markers or crayons (optional)

Rhetoric:

• Composition notebook (college ruled preferred)

• Index cards

English:

• 3 inch x 3 inch sticky notes
