Reader’s Workshop/Daily 5
• Guided Reading/Writing – work with small groups of students with similar reading or writing needs. Use selected texts at an appropriate level or a particular reading/writing strategy.
• Read to Self/Independent Reading – Individual students read texts at their “Just Right” level and of their own choosing. Over time, students read and respond to a variety of texts independently. (Book Corner/Book boxes)
• Read to Someone -Students read with a partner to work on motivation, fluency, rate and intonation, and apply strategies learned they are learning.
• Listen to Reading -Students will listen to stories being read on a tape. Students may also use texts to practice their fluency and intonation while reading into a tape recorder.
• Work on Writing and Word Work- Students will apply writing strategies they are learning to independent writing. They will also use their weekly word study words to do word work. (Envelopes in planner with weekly words)
Writer’s WorkshopGuided writing- small groups of writers to teach the craft,
strategies and skills needed at that time.Independent writing- mini-lesson and using the learning
from that lesson in your writingConferring- meeting with individual writers to ask them
questions about their writing
*Some of our mini-lessons will be working with the six traits of writing as the year progresses. In the beginning of the year students will be graded on how well their ideas are supported by specific examples or details, how well the organization and form enhance the central idea and move the reader through the text and whether the voice and tone are authentic and compelling. As the year progresses students will also be grade on sentence fluency, word choice and conventions.
