HIGH HOLIDAY TICKETS

High Holiday ticket forms are now available!

1. YOU MUST SUBMIT A TICKET REQUEST FORM OR YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE HIGH HOLIDAY TICKETS. Tickets are required for everyone attending High Holiday services at ASBI. Due to the high volume of ticket requests, all requests—for either open or assigned seating—MUST be made by submitting a ticket request form. Please DO NOT call the shul office to make a ticket request over the phone.

2. BE IN GOOD STANDING BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR REQUEST. We cannot process your request until you are in good standing. This means that at least half of your membership dues have been paid and you have no previous outstanding balances, or you have initiated a payment plan. If you need to request an adjusted dues amount, please fill out a Dues Adjustment Form (asbi.org/duesadjustment) and make at least a partial payment so that you can be in good standing.

3. CHOOSE THE CORRECT FORM AND SUBMIT IT BEFORE 4:00 PM ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12. Links to all of the forms can be found at asbi.org/holidays. All forms can be filled out online, or you can download a PDF version of the form. Paper forms are available in the ASBI lobby. ASBI Members: please note that there are separate forms for open seating and assigned seating.

4. QUESTIONS? Learn more about High Holiday tickets, assigned seating, guest tickets, and more, at asbi.org/holidays. If you still have questions, please email [email protected].

UPCOMING EVENTS "PIOUS IRREVERENCE" BOOK LAUNCH WITH DOV WEISS

Wednesday, September 21, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM Join community member Dov Weiss at ASBI to celebrate and learn about his recently-published book, Pious Irreverence: Confronting God in Rabbinic Judaism. Copies of the book will be for sale at a special discount.

About Pious Irreverence: Judaism is often described as a religion that tolerates, even celebrates arguments with God. Unlike Christianity and Islam, it is said, Judaism endorses a tradition of protest as first expressed in the biblical stories of Abraham, Job, and Jeremiah. In Pious Irreverence, Dov Weiss has written the first scholarly study of the premodern roots of this distinctively Jewish theology of protest, examining its origins and development in the rabbinic age. Weiss argues that this particular Jewish relationship to the divine is rooted in the most canonical of rabbinic texts even as he demonstrates that in ancient Judaism the idea of debating God was itself a matter of debate. By elucidating competing views and exploring their theological assumptions, the book challenges the scholarly claim that the early rabbis conceived of God as a morally perfect being whose goodness had to be defended in the face of biblical accounts of unethical divine action.

Dov Weiss is an Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies in the Department of Religion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed his PhD at the University of Chicago Divinity School as a Martin Meyer Fellow in 2011 and was the Alan M. Stock Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for Jewish Studies in 2012. After receiving rabbinic ordination from RIETS (Yeshiva University) in 1999 as a Wexner Graduate Fellow, Dov helped found Yeshivat Chovevei Torah (YCT) Rabbinic School where he served as Director of Operations and instructor of Talmud and Jewish Law.

Get Out the Vote! Because this Election Season is (pick your own

adjectives, because we just don't have the words....) Sunday, September 18, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

At Anshe Emet Synagogue (3751 North Broadway)

On Sunday, September 18, ASBI’s Social Action Committee, in partnership with Anshe Emet Synagogue, offers an opportunity for our area synagogues to share in the act of voter engagement. We will meet at Anshe Emet at 11:00 AM to eat together and explore texts that engage with the question of why is it important, as 21st Century Jews, to participate in the rights and privileges of our democracy. Following the session, we will have a brief training session on how to approach our neighbors and encourage them to register to vote in the November election. Those who wish will go out into the immediate neighborhood to participate in voter registration. Please RSVP to [email protected].
