Immigration vs. Interior (inter) MigrationBoth words refer to movement of people So what is the difference between these 2 words?

Immigration: Moving permanently to a new country.

Example: Emily immigrated to Germany.

Interior Migration: Permanently moving within a country or region.

Example: Nolan migrated to Colorado.

Where do people live in the United States & Canada?

Generally people want to live where there areeconomic opportunities

● Early settlers migrated to areas with good cropland (farmable land) or other natural resources.

● As small communities grew, cities developed. Cities originally developed along rivers or other transportation routes.

How does geography and climate impact population?

★ In both the U.S. and Canada, population has grown the fastest in urban areas (cities). Why??

Answer: Geography and climate affect economic opportunities. Is it too cold, too hot, do the mountains make it difficult to access, desert and limited natural resources?

Interior Migration

Canada:

● For years fishing was a big industry, but overfishing has caused many fisherman to look for work in other areas of Canada,

● Today people have migrated to the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia because of jobs in the energy and engineering sectors.

● Most jobs are found in the service industry.

United States:

● For years manufacturing was a big industry in the U.S. and those manufacturing jobs were mainly located in Northern cities

● Today people have migrated to the southern states because of the decline in manufacturing jobs in the North.

● Most jobs are found in the service industry

What types of jobs would be considered “service industry”? In the chat pod identify one service job.

Trading products is one way many countries make money. The United States, Canada, and Mexico are large trading partners. This is due, in part, to NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) which allows for the trade of products without tariffs.

Comparing Governments

Canada:

● Parliamentary Government: voters elect members of parliament, then parliament elects the Prime Minister.

● Constitutional Monarchy: Queen Elizabeth is the symbolic head, but has no real power.

● Has a federal structure

United States:

● Republic: voters elect all representatives● 3 branches of government: legislative,

executive, judicial● Has a federal structure

Economic Challenges

Canada:

● Even though Canadians have one of the highest standards of living in the world, Globalization has caused job loss.

● Offshoring lead many companies to moved jobs outside of Canada where wages and other costs are lower.

United States:

● Despite the U.S. having one of the strongest economies in the world, not all Americans have seen the benefits.

● Only Americans with the highest incomes have seen their incomes raise the fastest.

● Offshoring lead many companies to moved jobs outside of the U.S. where wages and other costs are lower.

Social Challenges

Canada:

● Canada has a multicultural society. Overcoming racial prejudice remains an ongoing challenge.

● In 2016, Canada admitted over 300,000 immigrants--the highest number in 100 years.

United States:

● The U.S. has a multicultural society. Overcoming racial prejudice remains an ongoing challenge.

● There are about 2.5 million Native Americans in the U.S. They are struggling to protect their land and have filed many lawsuits against logging, natural gas, and oil companies.

Environmental Challenges

Canada:

● Ice sheets are melting and sea levels are rising, threatening coastal communities.

● Mining has lead to soil and water pollution.

United States:

● States along the Colorado River have redirected water for irrigation, recreation, and energy.

● Colorado river has been reduced to only a trickle in some places.
