Pastor’s Column

St. Anthony of Padua, High Ridge, MO

Thank You, Jesus! God’s peace and love to each and all of you.

I am Father John Reiker and I thank our Lord for sending me here to Pastor St. Anthony’s Parish Family. I have had true pleasure in meeting so many of you already, and I notice ad thank you for being so friendly and helpful, so welcoming. I trust our Lord will lead us together to our carrying on the work of our Lord Jesus here in High Ridge, and working may miracles through us. For those who may wonder, I simply felt our Lord calling me to move on from St. Charles Bor-romeo Parish after 11 wonderful years there. I also left Immaculate Heart of Mary after 11 years - - to allow new leadership and ideas come in rather than stagnate. I believe 10 to 12 years are long enough for any leader. I asked for a small parish in which I hope to get to know more people more closely. And sharing a meal together is one of the best ways to get to know people. So I am always open to being invited to dinner in your home or out anywhere. I think Jesus felt the same - which is why we connect so beautifully at Mass - our Lord’s supper and sacrifice. Please help me out with all your ideas as well as how things have been done well here before. Also, tell your name often for the next year, or email me at [email protected] as I remember much more if I see it in writing. Jesus loves you and I know I will, too, with His grace and help.

Joke of the Week - How to get to Heaven A man dies and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter says to the man, “Here’s how it works. You need to have one hundred points to get into heaven. You tell me about all the good things you’ve done. They are all worth a certain number of points. If your total is one hundred or more, you can come in.” “Well,” says the man. “I was happily married to same woman for 52 years. I never looked at another woman. I was attentive and loved her dearly.” “That’s great,” says St. Peter. “That’ll be two points.” “Hmmm,” says the man. “This is going to be harder than I thought. Well, I attended church regularly, vol-unteered my time and tithed faithfully.” “Wonderful,” says St. Peter. “That’s worth another point.” “One point!” says the man. “Okay, okay. I was involved with a prison ministry for twenty-five years. I went into the prison, at least monthly, and shared Jesus with them.” “Wow!” says St. Peter. “That’s another two points!” “Only two points!” says the man. “At this rate, it’ll be only by the grace of God that’ll I’ll ever get into this place.” “Bingo!” says St. Peter. “That’s one hundred points! Come on in.”

Thank You! Thank You! Dear Friends, I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your love, prayers, cards, and gifts. It means a lot to me. I wish I could write to you all personally, but you will understand if you did not get a thank you note from me personally. You all will be in my love and prayers.

SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902) July 6 Does anything match a mother's pride in her children? First Communions, confirma-tions, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother's heart! Imagine, then, As-sunta Goretti, the only mother ever to attend her child's canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year old son Alessandro propositioned her barely twelve-year old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, "It is a sin! God forbids it!" he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, "Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday." Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. "I've kept my promise," she smiled. "You'll be here with me someday." Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta's forgiveness. "Jesus has forgiven you," she replied, "my Maria too. How can I refuse?" Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

All Servers, Sacristans, And Eucharistic Ministers

This is just a reminder to servers after all Masses - the pitcher is to be filled, the bowl emptied and the towel folded and all are to be left on the Credence table. A reminder to all Eucharistic Ministers, whether you are scheduled or are subbing, you are to clean the sacred vessels. The servers may not clean the vessels. If only 1 minister cleans the vessels, it takes longer than if 2 or 3 are there. Thank you.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. This pro-gram is designed for children ages three through eight (third grade). Children’s Lit-urgy of the Word brings the Gospel to the chil-dren at their level of understanding. Through appropriately adapted Scripture texts, music, prayer, and activities that reinforce the Gospel message, the children have an opportunity to celebrate their faith in a way that is joyful and relevant to their own young lives. The children are escorted out of mass by the program cate-chists after the Opening Prayer and return to mass during the Preparation of Gifts. For more information, contact Kathy Joslin at 636-677-1567 or [email protected].
