We are gathered together as one body † In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen The Lord be with you. And also with you Before the children leave for Children’s Church we pray together.... Dear God, this church is a family. Help us to learn together, to worship together, to share together and to pray together. In Jesus name. Amen.

INVITATION TO CONFESSION

My brothers and sisters, as we prepare to celebrate the presence of Christ in word and sacrament, let us call to mind and confess our sins. You raise the dead to life in the Spirit: Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. You bring pardon and peace to the broken in heart: Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. You make one by your Spirit the torn and divided: Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you † pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

GLORIA (To the tune of Ode to joy: Beethoven) Glory be to God in heaven, peace to those who love him well; on the earth let all his people speak his grace his wonders tell. Lord we praise you for your glory, mighty father, heavens king; Hear our joyful adoration and accept the thanks we bring. Only Son of God the Father lamb, who takes our sins away; now with him in triumph seated, for your mercy, Lord we pray. Jesus Christ, most high and holy, saviour you are God alone. In the glory of the Father, with the Spirit three in one.

THE COLLECT (The special prayer of the day) God of holiness, your glory is proclaimed in every age: as we rejoice in the faith of your saints, inspire us to follow their example with boldness and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

FIRST READING: Revelation 7.9-end After the reading...This is the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God SECOND READING: 1 John 3.1-3

After the reading...This is the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Stand to sing the Gradual Hymn

Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am God. I am the Lord that healeth thee. I am the Lord that healeth thee. I am the Lord that healeth thee. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust.

THE GOSPEL – Matthew 5.1-12 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you O God At the end of the reading: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

THE SERMON

Please stand We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father, through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION United in the company of all the faithful and looking for the coming of the kingdom, let us offer our prayers to God, the source of all life and holiness. RESPONSE: Lord, in your mercy...hear our prayer. At the end of the intercessions, the names of our loved ones are read out. In remembrance of those we love but see no longer, you are invited to light a candle and place it on the high altar while the names of those to be remembered are read out. Your loved one’s name does not have to be on the list for you to do this. At the end of our prayers ... This is the will of him who sent me that I should lose nothing of all that he has given to me, and I will raise them up on the last day. We pray together... Lord God, creator of all, you have made us creatures of this earth, but you have also promised us a share in life eternal. According to your promises, may all who have died in the peace of Christ share with your saints in the joy of heaven where there is neither sorrow nor pain, but life everlasting. Amen

THE PEACE

Please stand. We share a sign of peace with those standing nearest us.

Jesus says: Peace I leave with you: my peace I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

OFFERTORY HYMN:

Blessèd assurance, Jesus is mine: O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God; Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. CHORUS: This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Saviour all the day long. This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Saviour all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. CHORUS: Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Saviour am happy and blessed; Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915

HOLY COMMUNION Blessed are you, Lord God of creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God forever Blessed are you Lord, God of creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the cup of salvation. Blessed be God forever.

7

The Lord be with you. And also with you Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks, most gracious God, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and glorified in the assembly of your saints. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. We, your holy Church, acclaim you. In communion with angels and archangels, and with all who served you on earth and worship you now in heaven, we raise our voice to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Mass of St Thomas Copyright 2012 David Thorne Music We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; Do this in remembrance of me.

8

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Alban, and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen. As our Saviour taught us so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; Your kingdom come, your will be done; on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory, are yours, now and for ever. Amen

9

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace

Mass of St Thomas Copyright 2012 David Thorne Music God’s holy gifts, for God’s holy people. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the father. Amen All baptised Christians who receive communion in their own churches are welcome to come forward for communion. Alternatively, you are welcome to come forward for a blessing.

COMMUNION HYMN

I watch the sunrise lighting the sky, Casting its shadows near. And on this morning bright though it be, I feel those shadows near me. But you are always close to me Following all my ways. May I be always close to you Following all your ways, Lord. I watch the sunlight shine through the clouds, Warming the earth below. And at the mid-day, life seems to say: "I feel your presence near me." For you are always . . .

10

I watch the sunset fading away, Lighting the clouds with sleep. And as the evening closes its eyes, I feel your presence near me. For you are always . . . I watch the moonlight guarding the night, waiting till morning comes. The air is silent, earth is at rest – only your peace is near me. For you are always . . .

Post communion prayer...

God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things: may we who have shared at this table as strangers and pilgrims here on earth be welcomed with all your saints to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through Him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen

THE BLESSING

God give you his comfort and his peace, his light and his joy, in this world and the next: and the blessing … Go in peace, to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen

CLOSING HYMN:

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,; endless is the vict’ry thou o’er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the vict’ry thou o’er death hast won! Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life! Life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife; Make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love. Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above.

Christmas Shoeboxes for Link to Hope. This year, the leaflets have come for our Christmas Shoeboxes going to Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine etc. Gerry has put them on the Mission Table. Do take one and pack a box of goodies for either a family of mum, dad, and children or for an elderly person living alone. A list of suitable items for either box is included in the leaflet. That section needs to have included items ticked and then taped to outside of wrapped shoebox. Instructions for this are on the right hand side of leaflet. Please remember not to mix gifts for families and older person in same box. The gifts for the elderly are for those living alone in really remote areas. As it can be very cold in winter, it is helpful to include hat, scarf or gloves. Enjoy doing your shoebox. Hopefully l will be back with you during October to let you know when we need to collect them in. Many Thanks, Merle. Dick Whittington Panto at The Ifield Barn Theatre . 9th December @2.30 pm. Sarah Magrath has organised a group booking and has tickets £7.50. Please speak to her if you are interested. All welcome. (Organised by The Mother’s Union).
