Thanks to the generosity of many families here at St. Joseph, a total of $42,664 was contributed to the 2020 CMA from our parish community. This year, our goal is $ 28,891. Families will be receiving a CMA mailing from Archbishop Schnurr in the coming week or so. Please prayerfully complete your pledge card and return it in the envelope provided, or bring your completed pledge card and envelope to Mass. For more information or to donate online, please visit www.AOCstewardship.org. Thank you!
THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH: OUR CHURCH IS A SPECIAL SHRINE!
We are now in the Year of St. Joseph! Pope Francis announced this special year of devotion to St. Joseph, beginning December 8th, 2020, and continuing through December 8th, 2021 (It began and will end on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.). Because St. Joseph is the patron saint of this parish, Father Umberg asked the Archbishop to designate our church as a shrine of St. Joseph for this year (Two other St. Joseph churches in the Archdiocese, one in Dayton and one in the far north, Wapakoneta, have also been thus designated.). What does this mean, to be a temporary shrine? It means that this year, if someone makes a pious visit to our church in honor of St. Joseph, it is an occasion for receiving a plenary indulgence (along with the fulfillment of the other requirements for obtaining an indulgence prayer for the Holy Father, sacramental confession, and reception of Holy Communion). How do I get the special plenary indulgence? A plenary indulgence means that all the temporal punishment due for our sins (or the sins of the soul for whom we are trying obtain the indulgence ) is remitted. A partial indulgence means that some of the punishment is remitted. The conditions for a plenary indulgence are rather strict; the person obtaining the indulgence must be free from any attachment to sin, even venial sin. (Good news: if you try to get a plenary indulgence, but don’t meet all the conditions, you almost certainly will get a partial indulgence!) For even a partial indulgence you must be in a state of grace at the time you perform the act that is an occasion for the indulgence. There are many acts that the church has designated as occasions for plenary indulgences (for example, a half hour of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a half hour
of pious reading of Holy Scripture, etc.—these are listed in a document form the Vatican entitled Enchiridion indulgentiarum). So much for the conditions. Here are the requirements to receive this indulgence: Visit St. Joseph Church with the pious intention of
honoring St. Joseph and receiving the indulgence.
Reverently recite the Creed and pray an Our Father.
Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father (another Our Father and a Hail Mary would be good).
Receive the Sacrament of Penance and the Holy Eucharist within 3 weeks of visiting the shrine.
In next week’s bulletin, Father Umberg will give a teaching on the Theology of Indulgences.

Just as the first apostles were called by the Lord to become fishers of men, during this Catholic Schools Week, January 31st -February 6th, we remember that the role of our schools is to challenge young men and women to follow Christ. (Mk 1:17)
Stewardship & the Word
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
There is a certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus calls His first disciples — Andrew and Simon, James
and John. Each one follows Jesus immediately, unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father
and fellow-workers. To what is Jesus calling me - at this moment, in these circumstances? What will I need to
abandon in order to follow Him?

Qualified Charitable Distributions Are you age 72 and required by the IRS to take annual distributions from your IRA account? If so, you may consider making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA account directly to the church. QCD will satisfy your annual contribution requirement and will not be included in your taxable income for the year. This could be a great way to save taxes and financially support the church or your favorite charity. For more details on Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA account, please contact your tax advisor (we cannot give specific tax advice).

Around our Parish
Handicapped and Dietary needs at Mass - At St. Joseph Parish we pride ourselves on making sure that “All are Welcome.” Sometimes we are not aware of the needs of our members. If you are handicapped and cannot walk up the aisle to receive communion at Mass, let one of the Ushers know and they will make sure that someone comes to you. We also are aware of the ongoing dietary concerns of those who need to stay away from wheat. If you are one of those afflicted with that health issue, again let one of the Ushers know and they will make sure that you receive a low-gluten host. We hope to make everyone’s visit to St. Joseph a pleasant and welcoming experience.

Looking Ahead
Gospel Reflection
GOSPEL: Mark 1:14-20 In the Gospel, the mention of John the Baptist’s arrest signals that
the reign of God would not be established without sacrifice and
that following Jesus could be dangerous. Jesus begins his preach-
ing with a call to repentance. The call to repentance connects his
preaching with that of John the Baptist’s. If the Ninevites re-
sponded so fully to the preaching of Jonah, how much more
should we respond to Jesus?
The Gospel goes on to relate the call of four apostles: two sets of brothers, Peter and Andrew, and James and
John. We notice their immediate response to Jesus just like the Ninevites’ immediate response to Jonah. Disciple-
ship leads to mission: “Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.” These men are called to become dis-
ciples and make disciples. So it is with us: we are called to radical conversion to Christ and called to lead others
to Christ. total commitment.
Jesus says that the new role of his apostles will be to “catch people.” (read more commentaries at ascentioncatholic.net)

ROSARY and SCRIPTURE STUDY GROUP
This group gathers on Thursday mornings at 8:45 a.m. to pray the rosary
and discuss the upcoming Sunday Mass Readings. Join us in the Hospitality Room
with your rosary and mask. If you have a missalette or Word Among Us, bring this as well.
Five Ways to Step Up your Spiritual Life in 2021!
1. Begin a Devotion to St. Joseph in this Year of St. Joseph. Say prayers and watch for an opportunity to
consecrate yourself, both offered through our St. Joseph parish communications.
2. Increase your Marian Devotion. Commit to praying the rosary daily, or if you have not been praying
it, perhaps begin by establishing once/week to pray it. Invite others you feel comfortable around to
pray the rosary or ask someone to have a “Zoom” rosary. Try one of the many rosary apps, such as
https://www.schooloffaith.com/daily-rosary-meditations.
3. Make Time for Spiritual Reading. Read biographies of or works of the saints, (ex: Rediscover the
Saints, by Matthew Kelly was distributed last year), or listen to podcasts or other virtuous talks on
You-Tube, like, Fr. Mike Schmitz, The Bible in a Year.
4. Share your Catholic faith and its Resources with Others. Many people are hurting during the current
pandemic and these times of political unrest and financial instability. Offer to pray with, listen to, or
safely assist them. Refer friends, neighbors, and others to organizations who can help, such as
Matthew 25 Ministries, St. Vincent DePaul, TRAM, Catholic Social Services, etc.
5. Attend Mass One Extra Day (or more) Each Week. Either go to Mass in-person or by live-streaming one
or more additional times to begin your day with this most powerful action. If online, insure a
Spiritual Communion is made, and gain strength from this. Remember daily Mass, (St. Joseph Church
live-streams on Wednesdays), is about 1/2 hour of time.
