Alabama is located in the south of the U.S. at subtropical latitudes on the coast of theGulf of Mexico. The state is exposed to diverse air masses, including warm, moist airfrom the Gulf of Mexico and dry continental air masses, which are cold in the winterand warm in the summer. Thus, Alabama's climate is characterized as having mildwinters, hot and humid summers, and year-round precipitation.

During the summer months, (June-August)Daytime high temperatures fall in the range of 85F to 95F, regularly exceeding 95Facross the state. Nighttime low temperatures fall at or above 75F. This is also the timewhen you see the most thunderstorms in the year, usually late in the afternoon.

Daytime high temperatures fall in the range of 54F to 63F. Nighttime average lowtemperatures range from 30F in the northern portion of the state to more than 45Falong the coast. The average annual number of nights below freezing is 51 and 61 forBirmingham and Huntsville (northern portion of the state), compared to only 15 forMobile (along the coast).

During the winter months, (December-February)

The statewide average annual precipitation is 55.5 inches, with the relatively dryperiod being from August to October. Snowfall is infrequent, with an annual average ofonly 0.5 inches.

Tornadoes and hurricanes are two of the deadliest weather hazards in the state.Tornadoes typically occur in the spring and fall, with an estimated 22 tornadoestouching down each year. On average, Alabama is directly impacted by a hurricaneabout once every 6 years.

Drivers LicenseNew residents are required to obtain an AL drivers license within 30 daysof establishing residency.

Those who hold a valid license from another state must pass a written teston road rules as well as the vision examination.

Those without a current, valid license from another state are also requiredto take a driving test.

Out-of-state new residents and those who are applying for an AL driverslicense for the first time must visit one of the following AlabamaDepartment of Public Safety (DPS) offices: alea.gov

Vehicle RegistrationNewcomers must transfer their vehicle title and obtain their AL licenseplates within 30 days of establishing residency.

Tags may be purchased at the Commissioner of Licenses Office in theCourthouse or one of the satelllite offices.

AL maintains a primary safety belt law that allows law enforcement officers tostop motorists and issue citations for failure to use safety-belt restraints.

AL's child passenger safety seat law requires that every person transporting achild under the age of six years in a motor vehicle must properly secure the childpassenger restraint system that meets applicable federal motor vehiclestandards.

Infants to one-year-old children who weigh at least 20 to 22 pounds shouldalways ride in an infant-only or rear-facing convertible seat with harness strapsat or below shoulder level.

Toddlers who are older than 12 months and weigh between 20 and 40 poundsshould ride in a convertible or forward-facing safety seat with harness straps ator above shoulders.

Young children between the ages of four and eight who weigh more than 40pounds should be placed in a belt-positioning booster seat that faces forward.This seat must be used with both lap and shoulder belts.

Safety experts confirm that all children who are age 12 and under should ride inthe back seat of the vehicle.

WATERCRAFT REGULATIONS

Watercraft LicensingBoats are not titled but they are registered in Alabama.

If the boat is new, a bill of sale is required.

For used boats, provide a bill of sale and the last boat registrationcertificate.

State, county, and/or municipal tazes may be due at the time ofregistration.

All bills of sale must be notarized or have two witnesses. Registrationfees are based on the size of the watercraft, starting with boats less than16 feet in length up to those that are 40 feet or longer. Boat owners mayregister, renew, or transfer ownership at their office of county Judge ofProbate or License Commissioner.

Watercraft Operator CertificationEvery person age 12 and older who operates a motorized vessel on statewaterways must obtain an operator's certification. Those who arerequired to take an exam for this certification may do so at any of theAlabama Department of Public Safety drivers license offices.

Those who were 40 years old or older on April 28, 1994 must becertified but are not required to pass an examination and can have thevessel class added to their valid drivers license.

Others who are exempt from the exam are holders of a cerfificate ofcompletion of the U.S. Power Squadron Boating Course or the U.S. CoastGuard Auxiliary Boating Course.

Immunizations in the proper doses and interval are required for diphtheria,tetanus, polio, rubella, measles, and mumps.

Cheaha State Park19644 AL-281, DeltaMt. Cheaha, highest point in Alabama at 2,407 ft.The park boasts a lake, cabins, and chalets that arepopular draws for regional visitors. You can drive tothe mountains peak by paved road punctuated byscenic overlooks. For an easy way to enjoy unendingviews of the surrounding green valley, walk the shortPulpit Rock or Bald Rock trails, the Bald Rock trail hasa boardwalk that makes the view accessible towheelchairs and strollers. Time your hike for sunset orsunrise, when the valley explodes with color.Solitude can often be found at the park's campsitesand longer trails, which are Cave Creek Trail or CheahaMountain. Both seven-mile round-trip sections of the100-plus mile Pinhoti Trail, known as 'Alabama's linkto the Appalachian Trail,' which runs through CheahaState Park and neighboring Talladega National Forest.Dogs are allowed.

15,288 acres and home to a namesake canyon that isone of the deepest in the Southeast.The park includes many rare plants, it's highestoverlook at Lookout Mountain, the clear and cleanLittle River, and three major waterfalls: DeSoto Falls,Little River Falls, and Grace's High Falls. DeSoto StatePark is at the northwestern edge of the preserve andhas a lodge, restaurant, and several campgrounds. The trails are all shorter than 3-miles and are easy tomoderate but serenely stunning. Popular trailsinclude the waterfall hikes to Little River Falls (1/2mile with accessible boardwalk option), DeSoto Falls(2 miles), and the wildflower-rich Beaver Pond Trail(1.6 miles). From Little River Falls you can hikeanother 3/4 mile down to Hippie Hole, one of thestate's best swimming holes. Dogs are allowed.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge12295 AL-180, Gulf ShoresLocated in five separate units in Baldwin andMobile counties, directly west of Gulf ShoresOnly 11 square miles, the reserve is small butprovides a quiet escape from nearby crowds.The refuge was established in 1980 as a sage harborfor migrating birds, more than 300 species, includingospreys, herons, and hummingbirds. Other notablewildlife include red fox, coyotes, nesting sea turtles,and alligators.The refuge has a handful of short, well-marked trails.Most popular is the 4-mile round-trip Pine BeachTrail, this trek crosses the barrier island from the Gulfof Mexico to Mobile Bay, the saltwater Little Lagoonon one side and freshwater Gator Lake on the other.An observation tower allows for stunning views.There is a shorter trek, the wheelchair-accessible 1-mile Jeff Friend Loop, which has views of the LittleLagoon and wildlife-spotting opportunities. No petsare allowed.

Talladega National Forest9901 AL-5, BrentSituated on the southern edge of the Appalachiansand spanning over 600-sq. miles.Popular destination for hiking, mountain biking andprimitive camping. While many areas are accessibleby gravel and dirt roads, much of the forest isdifficult to navigate by car, making it popular with 4-wheeler enthusiasts as well.The forest contains gentle waterfalls, rippling rivers,rock bluffs, and rare longleaf pines. Notable hikesinclude the moderate, wilflower-stewn Skyway LoopTrail (18 miles), and the difficult Porters Gap toAdams Gap stretch (15 miles) of the Pinhoti Trail,which offers wildlife and mountain views. For aneasier trek, hike just under a mile down theChinnabee Silent Trail from the Lake ChinnabeeTrailhead to Devil's Den, a popular swimming hole atthe foot of a waterfall. Dogs are allowed.

A hiker's paradise.12 trails span out in every direction, past rivers andstreams, and stands of virgin forest and sandstonecliffs. The popular beginner-friendly trek is BordenCreek Trail (5-mile round-trip) offering waterfall views.Other trails are less clearly marked in order to keep the'wild' in this wilderness, be sure to bring a map andcompass. The popular, challenging trek is the 24-mileSipsey Wilderness Loop, a difficult circuit that starts atthe Randolph Loop Trailhead and links several trails toform a route that encompasses some of the best-knownlandmarks including: Big Tree, Alabama's biggest whitepoplar, and Ship Rock, a large jutting boulder shapedexactly like the prow of a ship.
