404–254–2902 www.hembreesprings.net Welcome Back HSES Families, Hembree Springs has a strong school/community relationship and we are thrilled that you are a part of our school family. It is my honor to serve as principal of this amazing school. We have a highly committed staff, and are pleased to welcome approximately 650 students in grades Pre-K-5. We follow the Georgia Standards for Excel- lence, and serve students through Talented and Gifted, Special Education, English as a Second Language, and Early Intervention programs. We invite you to join us as we continue to pursue academic excellence. We are proud of our students as they continue to soar each year. Hembree Springs has a history of producing well-rounded students, with a strong focus on the whole child. It is very important to me as well as our staff, to meet students where they are and move them forward as far as we can each year, regardless of the level they enter. We support a community of learners through positive approaches, where we encourage all Hawks to Be Helpful, Accept Responsibility, Work Together, Be Kind, and Be Safe. We have made a commitment to fully support each child through Fulton County’s guaranteed and viable curricu- lum. In doing so, we teach guided reading with a focus on skills at students’ individual levels, and teachers con- ference often with students to work on defined areas of focus. Writing instruction is supported through the Writing Units of Study, a workshop-based program that originated at Columbia University’s Teachers’ College, developed by Lucy Calkins. You may notice an increase in rigor, as our students learn and grow. Our Curriculum Support Teacher, Carrie McAtee, will be holding Literacy workshops later in the school year. Please watch for those dates in my weekly newsletter. I invite you to join us so that you may learn more about the way your children are receiving instruction. In Math, we will head into year three of Tabor Rotations, a station-rotation approach to instruction. In math clas- ses at HSES, stations might include, games, hands on activities, and of course, direct instruction from the teach- er. Tabor Rotations also encourages student accountability through a leadership component that we are excited to share as we cultivate young learners. The State of Georgia has recently updated Science and Social Studies standards, and we are pleased to present them to students for the first time this year. Along with new standards, we have received new Science materials to support student success. Physical Education and Fine Arts standards have also received a makeover at the state level, which is very exciting! I feel incredibly fortunate that Hembree Springs has such strong parental and community involvement. There are many ways to get involved with over 30 PTA programs and events as well as classroom support. We welcome moms, dads, grandparents, aunt, uncles, etc. We have an outstanding Dad’s Club, organized by Shannon Reyn- olds, our school counselor, and would love to expand the program. No matter what you select, I encourage you to support your child’s educational experience and be an active part of our school community. Our award win- ning PTA, your child’s teacher, and the admin team can help you get connected. For those of you who I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, I am married, with two beautiful children who are also students here at Hembree Springs. I am active in organizations that support families throughout the metro area. My family loves to travel and to spend time together. I love visiting new places and experiencing different cultures. In the fall, we yell “Go Dawgs,” and love college football! I hope that you will drop in for a visit if we’ve not yet met. My staff and I are happy to welcome you as a part of our school family, and are only a phone call or email away. I can be reached at 404 254-2902 or via email at [email protected]. Welcome Back HSES Families, Hembree Springs has a strong school/community relationship and we are thrilled that you are a part of our school family. It is my honor to serve as principal of this amazing school. We have a highly committed staff, and are pleased to welcome approximately 650 students in grades Pre-K-5. We follow the Georgia Standards for Excel-lence, and serve students through Talented and Gifted, Special Education, English as a Second Language, and Early Intervention programs.

We have made a commitment to fully support each child through Fulton County’s guaranteed and viable curricu-lum. In doing so, we teach guided reading with a focus on skills at students’ individual levels, and teachers con-ference often with students to work on defined areas of focus.

In math clas-ses at HSES, stations might include, games, hands on activities, and of course, direct instruction from the teach-er.

We have an outstanding Dad’s Club, organized by Shannon Reyn-olds, our school counselor, and would love to expand the program. No matter what you select, I encourage you to support your child’s educational experience and be an active part of our school community. Our award win-ning PTA, your child’s teacher, and the admin team can help you get connected.

Warm Regards, Mrs. Laurie Woodruff, Principal

Staff Placements

Hembree Springs has always had students at the heart of everything and that continues to

mean we meet each student where he/she is by providing the right instruction and support.

Our common vision, commitment to excellence, the talent of our teachers/staff, and our

strong community have resulted in being selected as a School of Excellence and a multi-

year Title 1 Rewards school.

We know our work is not finished so we continue to partner across the leadership, teach-

ers, staff, SGC, PTA, SHF, and Fulton County. We keep what is working and adjust.

Instructionally, we will continue to use Tabor rotations in math and Writer’s Workshop in

ELA. We will continue our focus on reading and you may hear the term Balanced Literacy

or references to leveled libraries.

Students will now be going to the Hands On! Minds On! STEM lab weekly. They will con-

tinue to receive technology instruction during Media time and now in their homeroom.

You may notice smaller class sizes or classes with multiple teachers as we use our assis-

tants, EIP, and ESOL teachers to reduce student-to-teacher ratios.

As we announced in May, we have made a several shifts in staff placements and have

swapped the location of 2nd and 4th grade classrooms.

To simplify processes for parents and to clarify the alignment of our support organiza-

tions, the PTA, the Soaring Hawks Foundation, and Mrs. Woodruff have partnered

together to make some adjustments:

You can now use one form and write one check to join PTA, donate to the annual

campaign, and let us know your volunteer interests.

Donations will go directly to PTA. 100% of the donations continue to stay at Hem-

bree Springs and are still tax deductible.

Soaring Hawks Foundation will focus on external grants and large corporate dona-

tions. PTA will continue to run our Business Partner program which is closely inte-

grated with the PTA programs and events.

ONE FORM! ONE CHECK! MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

The Hembree Springs Parent Teacher Association (HSES PTA) exists to support and facilitate student enrichment, staff support and family engagement. Our responsibilities include programs and events, volunteer coordination, and the annual parent fundraising campaign. As parents you can support PTA by joining as a member, donating to the annual campaign, and becoming a volunteer.

Your Donations Are Key to Our Students' Successes

At Hembree Springs, we believe in working together to help all our hawks learn, dream, and soar. It takes many elements to fulfill that goal, one of which is funding. The thirty plus enrichment programs, events, and re-sources that PTA provides account for some of the most impactful and engaging opportunities that our Hawk families remember and cherish long after they have moved on to middle and high school. The experiences and traditions equate to a PTA budget of $50,000 a year or $75 a student. We raise about $17,000 of this through events like Hembree Runs Wild, Freaky Friday and Family Dance, and programs like spirit nights, spirit wear, and PTA membership. We need to fund $25,000 from the annual campaign. This year, to simplify the process for parents, the annual campaign is being run by the PTA rather than Soaring Hawks so you can write one check. Last year there were only 81 donors raising $17,000. This year our goal is to have at least 250 donors. This year we ask each family to donate to the annual campaign. Any amount is welcome and appreciated. If everyone participates we can meet our goal and keep the programs and traditions in place.

Donate $50 by September 1 to be entered into the donor raffle for 2 Disney park hopper tickets

Welcome Back Hawks!

I am excited to announce that I have accepted the Title 1 Parent Liaison position at Hembree Springs this school year. Many of you know that over the years I have served in several different capacities at the school, most recently as the computer

technology teacher in our computer lab. While I loved all my experiences with Fulton County, I am especially excited to take on this new position and learn how we can better serve our students and families.

Twenty years ago, my family was given the opportunity to move to Germany for several years. Moving to a foreign coun-

try was extremely exciting for us, but the move also brought new challenges: navigating daily life. Trying to master a brand new language as an adult proved to be extremely difficult for me. This experience helps me empathize with families in our community

in which English is not their first language. My years in Germany also helped me gain great insight into a worldwide view of edu-cation and inclusion of all nationalities in our schools. I’m excited to adopt some of what I learned from my time abroad into our

program at Hembree. My husband and I live in Roswell and have three daughters who all graduated from Fulton County Schools. Two of our

daughters currently teach at Chattahoochee High School and our oldest daughter is involved in commercial real estate in Hou-

ston, Texas. We have two grandchildren and two wonderful sons-in-law. When not spending time traveling to Houston to visit our grandchildren, you can find us tailgating and cheering on the Clemson Tigers!

Please stop by and share any suggestions or recommendations you may have with me for this program. I am looking for-ward to a fantastic year!

Hello, Hembree families! I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to get started on the 2018-2019 school year.

I’m Dr. Carrie McAtee, and I’m excited to welcome you back. For the past four years, I have had the privilege of being your Media and Educational Technology Instructor and helping our Hawks learn in the media center. I have enjoyed getting to

know all of our students and watching them grow over the years. This year, I’m thrilled to announce that you will see me in a different role at Hembree. I will be serving as the Curriculum Support Teacher (CST) and working alongside Mrs.

Woodruff and Mrs. Smith.

I grew up in Roswell and attended Esther Jackson Elementary and graduated from Milton High School. I have a B.S. in ele-

mentary education from the University of Georgia, a Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida, and a doctorate in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment from Walden University. I have 25 years of ex-

perience in education, having been a classroom teacher in grades kindergarten, first, third, and fifth, and most recently as a media specialist. Here at Hembree, I have worked closely with teachers as the Professional Learning Facilitator and

helped implement Fulton County’s Personalized Learning Initiative. In addition, I serve on the School Governance Council

and the Leadership team.

I am excited to begin this new chapter, and look forward to working with our wonderful community in my new role as the CST. I will work closely with teachers on implementing the District curriculum and serve as a resource for our parents in

various capacities through the year. I look forward to continuing to help our Hawks grow as learners. I can be reached at

MORNING CARPOOL AND SAFETY: The carpool lane is in front of the A wing hall. Morning carpool begins at 7:15am

Morning carpool is the lane closest to the building. Students should be dropped off at school in carpool line. Do not walk your student through drop off zone traf-

fic. Stay in the carpool line. Say your goodbyes and have your child ready to exit the car in the mornings. This will ensure the carpool line

keeps moving. Students are allowed to exit your car only from the right side. THANK YOU!!!!!!!! Do not park your car in the third lane (in front of the school), in the bus lanes, or double park behind cars in

the parking lot to drop your child off. If you need to come into the building please park in an empty space in the parking lot.

Please pull up to the very first staff member so that we can fit as many cars as possible in the drop off zone.

Safety First: Please pay close attention to the crossing guard on Hembree Rd and to the teachers and staff members working carpool. Remember there is a crosswalk between the flagpole and front door. Watch for people crossing.

TARDIES Students must be in their classrooms by 7:40am. What is the best way to guarantee your student is not tardy? Have him or her ride the bus. Bus riders will never be

marked tardy. We recommend dropping your student off by 7:30am to ensure they have plenty of time. Carpool can get very busy

between 7:25 and 7:40am. If your student is late, please come into the building with him/her to sign him/her in.

STUDENT SAFETY is always a priority for us. Remember all doors will remain locked during the school day. All visi-tors must ring the bell on the camera pad to the right of the front door. When prompted, they will have to display their ID (driver's license) and state their name in order to be allowed to enter the building. Please remember to always bring your ID when you visit the school. In addition, your photo identification or driver’s license will have to be scanned into the sys-tem.

TRANSPORTATION CHANGES During Open House, you will let the teacher know how your child gets home (bus, car rider, Primetime, etc). To change that, send in a signed note to your child’s teacher letting them know what should happen that day. DISMISSAL: Please try and check students out of school before 2pm. 2:00—2:20 is a very busy time at the front desk. AFTERNOON CARPOOL AND SAFETY Afternoon carpool begins at 2:20. Afternoon carpool are the two lanes closest to the building. Please do not block the far left lane as the Day care vans cannot get through.

Affidavit of Residency is now only required at three times: 1. initial enrollment in FC, 2. entering Kindergarten, 6th

grade and 9th grade 3. when you have an address change.

DRESS CODE: Students should abide by the dress code set forth by Fulton County Schools, and is as follows:

Students in the school system are expected to dress and groom themselves in such a way as to reflect neatness, cleanliness and safety. All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or the orderly operation of the school.

Examples of inappropriate dress and grooming include: lack of cleanliness in person or dress; shoelessness; "short-short" clothing; bare midriffs; "tank tops"; "see-through" clothing or apparel which designates gangs or similar organizations or any dress that is disruptive to the educational process.

Designated dress involving school activities approved by the principal shall be acceptable. The principal or other duly author-ized school official shall determine whether any particular mode of dress or grooming results in a violation of the spirit and/or the intent of this rule.
