The Candle “Let There Be Light”of Remembrance: Jim Roskelly Chair, Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro (HPCG) Board of Directors

Let there be light. We light this candle in memory of those loved ones no longer with us, those lifelong

companions not beside us today nor waiting for us at home. We remember the importance of their lives in ours,

and we are keenly aware of their absence. May this light illuminate – even in a small way –

a little of the darkness we feel.

Dawn has broken on a beautiful day here at the ocean. I’ve come to refresh my weary spirit and to refuel my tired soul.

I’m so grateful for the peace and the calm of the seashore, where time stands still and un-rushed, where I can see and feel the beauty all around me.

This is my first morning at the ocean, and as I walk to the beach, feeling the rich, warm sand beneath my feet, I decide to collect a few shells.

It is low tide and I watch, mesmerized, as the ocean rises slowly, curls and then spills its white-laced foam onto the shore.

I walk by a broken scallop shell and leave it to search for more perfect ones.

But then I stop . . . go back . . .and pick up the broken shell. I realize that this shell is me with my broken heart.

This shell is people who are hurting . . . people who have lost loved ones . . . people who are frightened or alone . . . people with unfulfilled dreams.

This shell has had to fight so hard to keep from being totally crushed by the pounding of the surf . . . just as I’ve had to do.

Yet this shell is still out on the beautiful sandy shore . . . just as I am.

I am thankful that I haven’t been completely crushed by the heaviness of my heart . . . by the pounding of the surf.

If our world were only filled with perfect shells, we would miss some of life’s most important lessons along the way. We would never learn from adversity . . . from pain . . . from sorrow.

I am thankful for all that I have learned from my brokenness . . . for the courage it takes to live with my pain . . .

and for the strength it takes to remain on the shore.

Broken shells teach us not to look at our imperfections . . . but to look at the beauty . . .the great beauty . . . of what is still left.2

flames will bring yet more light into our hearts to replace the darkness, little by little. In the midst of our sorrow, we affirm our hopes … sometimes faint, but persistent—that life is good, radiant with warmth, beauty and

love. With the lighting of our single candle, we affirm life.

Melissa Burris, pianistMelissa Burris has been the Worship and Traditional Music Coordinator at First Lutheran Church since 2014. She also directs the Triad Tapestry Children’s Chorus, a role she has played since its inception in 1993. She and her husband, Lee, live in Greensboro and are the proud parents of two sons and a daughter. Last year, her father died after a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease. She and her family are very grateful for the services and support hospice provided during the last days of his life.

Dr. Michael Wood, guitar and dulcimerDr. Michael Wood graduated in 2012 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) with a doctorate in music performance and a certificate in ethnomusicology. While researching for his dissertation on the hammered dulcimer in Appalachian Old Time music, he became immersed in the wealth of wonderful and rich traditions of Old Time and Celtic music. Since 2016, Wood has also been a volunteer with Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro (HPCG). His primary assignment is at Beacon Place, where he plays music for patients, family members and staff. Currently, Wood lives in Greensboro, North Carolina with his wife Sara, son Jamie, and daughter Eliza.

Dr. Benjamin Crouch, clarinetBenjamin Crouch, a member of First Lutheran Church, graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in saxophone performance. At UNC Greensboro, he earned both a master’s and a doctorate in musical arts. Ben’s honors as a soloist include winning the 2007 UNC Chapel Hill concerto competition and the NCFMC Collegiate Auditions in 2012 and 2013. As a chamber musician, he has competed nationally in many prestigious competitions, including Fischoff. Currently he holds staff positions at Rockingham Community College, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and Guilford Technical Community College. In addition, he offers private music lessons and coaches ensembles and individuals at UNCG. He and his wife, Elizabeth (also a music teacher), are the proud parents of a young son, William, and are expecting a second child next spring.

The First Lutheran Handbell ChoirThe First Lutheran Handbell Choir rings throughout the year, playing a wide variety of works as a full choir and also in smaller ensembles. Several of the members have played bells for decades, while others began ringing only recently. Because of their members’ busy schedules, they are often in need of substitutes. Interested ringers from within and outside the congregation should see Melissa Burris for more information.
