    Welcome to

    The Borders

The Heritage of HorsemanshipThe annual Common Ridings and various town festivals are summer events that link both the Borders towns sense of community and the warlike story of the Scottish Borders themselves. The Selkirk Common Riding is often described as Europes largest mounted gathering. There are many opportunities for riding and trekking in the area.

The Border AbbeysThe four great abbeys of Melrose, Kelso, Dryburgh and Jedburgh stand as strong reminders of Pre-Reformation times. Jedburgh Abbeys visitor centre explains the role of these religious foundations in the life of medieval

Scotland. Melrose Abbey, with the Eildon Hills as a backdrop, is closely associated with Robert the Bruce whose heart is said to be buried here. Dryburgh Abbey allows a glimpse of the everyday lives of the monks of old. Kelso is most poignant of all and only a fragment of its former glory.

Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford and other Stately Homes Sir Walter Scott died in 1832 and within a few years his house, Abbotsford, became established on a Borders visitor trail. It has remained a popular attraction ever since. There are several other stately homes worth visiting in the Scottish Borders, including Mellerstain

  • and Manderston, as well as sumptuous Floors Castle, sometime described as Scotlands largest inhabited house.

Border Towns and TextilesA heritage of textiles as well as an active industry today can be explored in towns such as Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels, all of which have either working mills with visitor centres, or quality shops selling local products. Peebles and Melrose are popular and also are noted for their shopping choice. Kelso and Jedburgh likewise have a pleasant ambience and make good bases for countryside touring.

Scottish Borders OutdoorsThe Southern Upland Way is Scotlands longest official long-distance footpath and runs from Cockburnspath 212 miles (339 km) to Portpatrick in Galloway.

The River Tweed has the longest salmon season in the country and has more fish caught in it than any other river in Britain, and is just one of the areas angling options. Golf, too, is popular in the area, with some exceptional parkland courses, including the noted Roxburghe. Eyemouths coastal setting includes the

6th - nominated in the past as Britains Most Extraordinary Golf Hole!

Make the most of the areas 21 golf courses with a Freedom of the Fairways Golf Pass available from Visitscotland Information Centres throughout the area.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotlands greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the countrys beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

    Explore a world of plants

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, founded in 1670, is a world renowned centre for plant research, conservation and education. Its four remarkable Gardens the Botanics in Edinburgh; the mountain-side Benmore in Argyll; Dawyck in the wooded hills of the Scottish Borders; and Logan on a Gulf Stream warmed peninsula in Galloway differ in topography, soils and climate, enabling an exceptionally wide range of plants to be grown. Together they constitute one of the richest plant collections on Earth, with more that 15,000 species in cultivation.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored and supported through Grant-in-Aid by the Scottish Governments Environment and Forestry Directorate (ENFOR).

A magnificent 16th century Castle set in quiet parkland

landscape, Thirlestane Castle is one of the

oldest and finest inhabited Castles in

Scotland and remains the home of the

Maitland family today. The Castle and grounds offer a magical day out

  • DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF

    THIRLESTANE CASTLE

Set in the Scottish Borders at Lauder, Thirlestane Castle has its origins in the 13th century. It was rebuilt as the Maitland family home in 1590

and greatly enhanced by the Duke of Lauderdale in the 1670s. In 1840, it was extended and refurbished with

the addition of two new wings.

The Maitlands are a famous Scottish family who first came to Britain from France with William the Conqueror. As the seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale, the Castle has at times

held a central role in the historyof Scotland. Now in the care of aCharitable Trust, Thirlestane has

been carefully restored to its former splendour.

The Castle is set in extensive parklands overlooking the Lammermuir Hills and

the Leader Water, a tributary of the River Tweed. There is a small formal

garden planted with roses, a woodland walk and well spaced picnic tables in a wooded area near the Castle. The

grounds are the haunt of woodpeckers in the summer, sparrow hawks and buzzards are often to be seen, and

many waders frequent the banks of the Leader. The Southern Upland

Way stretching from coast to coast runs through part of the parklands, and many walkers stop to admire

the castle and picking up refreshment in our Tea Room.

The basic production process, and the superb quality of the fi nished product, has remained constant in our two centuries of manufacturing.

A Royal Warrant of Appointment as suppliers of Tweed to HRH The Prince of Wales gives the ultimate seal of approval; it demonstrates the highest level of service, quality and excellence.

Visitors are welcome to fi nd out more about the production process on one of our free mill tours, available in our factories in Elgin and Hawick. Our 5* visitor destinations each have a heritage centre, shop and coffee shop. So why not come and explore the Johnstons of Elgin story for yourself, stop off for a pot of tea and a homemade scone. Or visit our beautiful shop on Pilmour Links, in the picturesque town of St Andrews, which has been awarded a 5* Tourist Shop, the only one in town!

Our recent success and dedication to our craft has led to the opening of our new store on 77 New Bond Street, London.
