Witness And sharing our Time, Talent, & Treasure

Immersion Trip to Jamaica Reflec on by Elena Mujica

A er spending a week in Kingston, Jamaica, with four other volunteers for our Intersec on immersion trip, friends and family have asked me how it went, and every me I am at a loss for words. Truly, the experiences we had were indescribable in every sense of the word, and nothing I can say will ever be able to do it jus ce. I have looked for extravagant ways to describe the past week, but I’ve realized that the true beauty of this trip was demonstrated in its simplicity.

When many of us think of Jamaica, we imagine white, sandy beaches and resorts. In reality, about 18% of Jamaicans were living below the na onal poverty line in 2010, according to the World Bank. The na on’s capital, Kingston, holds many of these poor Jamaicans within its borders where they congregate in slums without many of the ameni es we consider to be essen al here in Los Altos. In par cular, the mentally and physically handicapped are le without food, shelter, or sanita on as their loved ones abandoned them on the street.

Here, the Missionaries of the Poor step in. Within Kingston, these sisters and brothers have built centers to house, care for, and love those are marginalized by their friends and families. However, they must also rely on both local and interna onal volunteers to help them with their daily tasks, and it is no easy request. Each day, the five of us were shu led to a center and put to work, applying lo on to the legs of residents, feeding them, brushing their teeth, playing with the children, pain ng the women’s nails, mopping the floors, handing out snacks, and just having conversa ons with the residents. While the work may have been physically taxing, but the emo onal struggle far outweighed the manual labor.

As a Silicon Valley kid looking at the men, women, and children in these centers, it was heartbreaking to witness how the residents lived. They lacked many of the things that I thought brought me happiness. Yet, at the same me, in this one week, I met some of the happiest people I have ever known in my en re life. The simplest ac ons could bring the purest joy: a laugh, some old nail polish, a poorly done Eminem rap, a hug, an impromptu dance party, a listening ear, a banana, an out-of-tune One Direc on song, a prayer. The smallest moments that I might have once considered insignificant became the cornerstone of this trip; it was in the stripped down simplicity that we truly connected with the residents and with each other.

Again, it wasn’t easy. Emo onally and spiritually, it was challenging, but challenging in the best way possible. Regardless of our own inner struggles, we were able to carry out Christ’s most basic mission: to love. Simply and uncondi onally. To look past what we couldn’t provide physically and to give of ourselves emo onally and spiritually, in ways that I didn’t really know were possible un l now. And as our li le band of five volunteers returns from Kingston to Los Altos, I hope and I pray that we can bring some of that simple, uncondi onal love to our families, our friends, and strangers. God knows we could use it. Raul Santana, David Santana, Melissa Geier, Elena Mujica, & Nicholas Davis

Next weekend, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa (SFCA). While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The SFCA supports pastoral projects that foster lasting

peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/africa.
