Create. Explore. Innovate. These three words describe the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, a national leader in training future generations of emerging artists and performers. Our alumni continue to electrify audiences in theatres, galleries, and concert halls, as well as in entertainment and technology-driven venues throughout the world. The School delivers a comprehensive developmental experience combining superlative artistic training with a top-ranked liberal arts education. It is home to the Departments of Art, Dance, Drama, and Music, offering undergraduate and graduate degree courses that include extensive studio, workshop, and performance experiences; theoretical and historical studies; and arts-and-technology practices. The School provides excellent facilities to support artistic development, including four theatres and a concert hall, the University Art Gallery, the Donald R. and Joan F. Beall Center for Art + Technology, electronic music studios, costume and sound design studios, a stage production shop, digital arts labs, and a video production studio. Our diverse performance venues also provide a rich extracurricular experience. School of the Arts students regularly participate in choirs, instrumental ensembles, drama and dance productions, and art exhibitions. Qualified students from other academic areas are also eligible to participate in many of these activities, and are encouraged to do so.

Regards,

Joseph S. Lewis III Dean

ART

DANCEDAnCE: The Dance program offers a comprehensive dance education, including the techniques of ballet, modern, and jazz dance, tap, selected world dance forms and improvisation; choreography; dance and technology; dance history; critical issues in dance; music for dancers; Laban notation; dance training methods; dance costume design; and dance science. Numerous performing opportunities exist for students, including four annual dance concerts produced by the Dance Department. Graduates of the program have entered ballet companies, modern dance companies, national tours of musicals, and have appeared in film and on television. Admission to the Dance major is by audition in ballet, modern dance, and jazz; the audition is held in late January.

DRAMAMUSIC

ART: The Art program takes a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary view of contemporary art practice. The Department emphasizes a conceptual approach to work in process in addition to traditional notions of craft. Students are encouraged to develop an individual, disciplined direction through an experimental approach to media, materials, and technique. The curriculum provides studio and exhibition experiences in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital imaging, performance, curatorial studies, gaming studies, and video, as well as inter- or multi-media practices. The undergraduate honors program serves to recognize and prepare advanced students for further study as Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) candidates in nationally recognized programs.

DRAMA: The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Drama combines broad liberal study and comprehensive training in several sub-disciplines. The program is designed for students interested in working professionally in theatre, film, television, and other performance areas, often after more specialized training at the graduate level. The Drama program also is intended for students who, while not necessarily planning to make the theatre their vocation, have a serious interest in the literature, theory, and practice of drama and performance. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) in Music Theatre offers qualified students a unique series of courses that provide advanced training in scene study, song interpretation, dance, voice, acting, audition technique, and the history of the American musical. Performance experiences vary from fully staged musicals to intimate revues. Students are introduced to Broadway performance techniques through the Music Theatre Workshop and the unique New York Satellite Program.

MUSIC: The curricular philosophy of the Department of Music is based on the ideals of the conservatory within the academy. The faculty are concerned with the performance and creation of music within the context of the highest standards of historical, aesthetic, and theoretical inquiry. The Department offers two degrees: the Bachelor of Music (B. Mus.) program provides intensive pre-professional training in music performance and is designed for students who aspire to work as professional musicians. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program couples study in musical performance with study of music within a liberal arts setting and is suitable for students who aspire to careers in the academy or who want to major in music and another discipline. All applicants apply to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program via an admission audition; admission to the Bachelor of Music (B. Mus.) degree is by a second audition later after matriculation.
