Dear People of Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony Parish:
“Go and tell.. what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, leapers
are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor have good news proclaimed
to them.”
(Matthew 11:4-5)
“Wouldn’t it be great if every Sunday was like that?” We were sitting at the reception
table after Confirmation. I responded to the mother of one of the newly confirmed:
“You mean two hour long liturgies???” “NO!” She gasped. “A church packed with
people!!”
It was a packed church last Sunday and that was just an outward expression of our very full hearts. Bishop
Callahan began the celebration explaining he was still in recovery from his quadruple bypass heart surgery.
Maybe because of what he had recently been through, he seemed all the more passionate and sincere in his
challenge to our young people to live their faith with courage. He was certainly living his with courage.
He did not distribute communion to conserve energy and because he still did not have full use of his right arm
and hand after the surgery. He only lasted for about a third of the pictures with candidates. But he left Loyal,
his third Confirmation celebration for the weekend, to go to Eau Claire for a Monday morning funeral of a
deacon’s mother. He is driven to “witness.” He clearly feels his most important work is to tell others about
what he has heard and seen: Christ’s work in his life.
I too want to share what I have heard and seen. I have begun hearing confessions for the Advent Season. If
ever there was a place where I see God clearly at work in the present, it is in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Those who cannot see the good in themselves have their eyes opened. Those crippled with anger or guilt
leave able to walk. Those feeling unclean leave cleansed. And in small ways and great, those who had given
up hope, stopped living, are raised back to life. For your sake and for the sake of those who live and work
with you, come!
Again, I apologize for the confusion regarding where our Communal Reconciliation Service will be taking
place. In previous bulletins it’s been listed both as taking place at St. Mary’s and St. Anthony’s. This is the
final word!! It will be at St. Mary’s Saturday at 10:30am on December 17th. I’ve been getting good feedback
on trying a Saturday morning for the service.
If Saturday doesn’t work, you have several other good options. This afternoon (Sunday) St. Mary’s in
Neillsville will be holding its Communal Reconciliation Service at 3:30pm. St. Bernard’s in Thorp will be
celebrating theirs on Monday Dec. 12th at 7:00pm. And St. Bernard’s in Abbotsford is next Sunday the 18th
at 7:00pm.
The Religious Education students will have the opportunity to go to Confession this Wednesday evening and
next. Fr. Hiebl is coming to help this Wednesday and Fr. Corradi is helping on the 21st.
Many people could witness to the importance of the envelope attached to today’s bulletin. The Second
Sunday of Advent we always invite people to express their gratitude to the men and women religious that
have played such an important part in our lives by helping them have a dignified life in retirement. As we all
know, the sisters who taught in our Catholic schools for decades not only worked for almost no pay, they also
had no retirement provisions.
Next Sunday will be our third Youth Mass! Normally we have set aside the fourth weekend of the month, but
because of Christmas we have moved it up one weekend. This month the eighth graders will be assisting at
the liturgies. This new ministry is definitely in the exploration stage. We are exploring what are possible
ways to celebrate Eucharist in a youth friendly way. Youth have been musicians, lectors, greeters, ushers and
gift bearers. And we’ve had some delightful dramas acted out. It will no doubt take a year or two before we
get into a format that really lets our youth: tell what they have heard and seen of our Lord’s work in their
lives. Please be patient and share any ideas you may have!
Fr. Steve

SCRIP NEWS: Thank you for using Scrip!!! With all the hustle
and bustle of the holidays, this is just a little safety note. Always
be aware of the balance on your gift cards. Check your receipts
and write it on the card, or do like I do and wrap the most recent
receipt around your card. Check your receipts to make sure your
card was applied correctly. Did they give the card back when
there was a balance left? Sometimes they get busy and forget --
it's okay to ask for the card to be returned if you want to check the
balance on-line also. With everything, just be aware! Have fun
shopping!!!
