Take into consideration your own cow herd genetic and feeding practices. The calving ease score (CE) is our best estimation based on genetics, EPD’s, Actual BW and body shape of each bull. The CE score can be found on the right column of their stats box.

We invite you to join us for our annual bull sale. This year we have

moved the sale to the Rimbey Agrim where you can view

the bulls indoors right next to the sale ring. We have a very

consistent set of bulls in the 2020 offering that will help ensure you get your

share of the profit from the cattle industry. We research and select the top

genetics that will continually improve our cowherd, which in turn gives us the

opportunity to offer you some of the best Angus genetics available.

The feeding program has remained the same. The home raised, rolled oat

based ration at about 1% body weight and good free choice hay, has allowed

our bulls to perform, grow and mature at reasonable rates with their future

in mind.

Our bulls are comparable in genetics and performance. Our Cutting Edge

bulls are selected from over 50 bulls retained from a 200 head cow herd base.

The sale bulls are pail fed, leading them to be docile, while maintaining their

soundness and activity in a large group.

As this sale takes place when most of the bulls are just over

12 months old, and our weather can be unpredictably cold, the

bulls may need to return to the farm after the sale for semen

testing when they have matured more and the weather is

more favorable. This also offers you a reliable test closer to

actual breeding season. Delivery to your farm will follow.

Welcome to the 2020 edition of the Cutting Edge Bull Sale.

It was a great relief to receive moisture last summer and

see the bale yard full. Calf prices were steady last fall and as

I write this they seem to be climbing higher.

This year’s bulls come to you as usual, fit and ready to breed.

Both Angus & Simmental bulls come from low maintenance

cows and are developed on oats and a cereal silage ration.

The extra age bulls are just that, born in April and May &

designed to be born then. They are not leftovers from last year.

Now with regards to birth weight I get it, a live calf is better

than no calf, but a 700 pound steer vs a 600 pound steer is

$200.00 Yes, the most I want to do is watch a heifer calve not

help her, so a bull with a birth weight under 85 pounds and

a low BW EPD is necessary. However, after her first calf it’s

time to produce & that’s when a bull with some performance

is needed, Angus or Simmental. Now birth weight doesn’t

mean everything, it’s how the calf is built. A long bodied calf

will always weigh more, and so will a calf born in January or

February, as we feed our cows harder to maintain condition

as they are asked to rebreed in late March & April. All Bar 17

bulls were born unassisted, no needed assistance anytime

after birth. Buy with confidence, bulls we feel are heifer friendly

are just that, 90 pound + birth weight bulls will calve just fine

on second calvers and mature cows.

Whether you prefer Angus or Simmental, the breeds

compliment each other extremely well. We all know cross

breeding is most profitable and that’s one reason we offer both.

BW = Birth Weight – pounds of birth weight (the lower the number, the lighter the calves)

WW = Weaning Weight – pounds of weaning weight (the higher the number, the more pounds will be weaned)

YW = Yearling Weight – pounds of yearling weight (the higher the number the more pounds as a yearling)

M = Maternal Milk – pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. A management number with reflection of the environment and feed resources.

TM = TM Maternal – The total maternal EPD is a measure of both growth and milking ability and is an indication of the size of calf a bull’s daughter will wean. The maternal milk EPD is combined with half of the weaning growth EPD to produce the total maternal EPD. This is a prediction of the total genetic influence that a sire will have on his daughter’s progeny.

NOTE: BREED AVERAGES CANNOT BE COMPARED between Red & Black Angus, nor can they be

compared between other breeds of cattle.

This does not making buying a bull any easier – it should only give you more confidence in realizing what the animal can contribute. EPD’s are a pedigree estimate that can help you navigate management and environmental conditions.

Keep in mind that it is still a 50/50 contribution between the bull and the female.

To use EPDs effectively you must understand how they work. Keeping in mind that you cannot compare EPD numbers between breeds or even Red Angus and Black Angus. The EPD Averages listed below are the average of all the registered Canadian Black Angus and all the Canadian Red Angus.

TOP % – the % number is an indication to where the EPD fits within all the Breed (Black Angus separate from Red Angus). The EPD Averages indicate that the EPD is 50% of that particular breed. Note: Red Angus or Black Angus are 2 different breeds. Example: 10% would mean that number is in the top 10% of the breed, therefore it is above average or better than average. (ie: A bull with an EPD Black Angus BW 0.4 is 16% - should offer better calving ease than the average of 2.0 (50%), and the EPD Black Angus YW 116 at 4% should produce higher Yearling Weights that are above the average of 83 (50%).

Example:Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd. You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of +10 and Bull B has a WW of +60. What does that mean? How can you use the EPDs to choose between the two bulls?

If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50).

It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs (WW & YW) may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well. And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider.
