The DEEPER Meaning of Amen – Part 2

Last week, we learned the role “Amen” plays in opening up the Heavens so that Hashem’s Beracha can shower upon us. This week, let’s uncover the deeper meaning of the word itself, and why it plays such a crucial role in the world.

The Zohar HaKadosh teaches us that each name of Hashem represents a different trait we perceive of Him. The holiest name available to us is the one spelled Yud – Heh – Vav – Hey, which rep-resents Hashem’s Rachamim, His ultimate mercy. It is so holy that each time a Sofer writes that name in a Torah, he must first go to the Mikvah.

Calling someone by their name indicates a familiarity, and helps create intimacy. The opposite is true, as well. Every good sales-man knows to quickly learn the names of potential clients… if you want them to actually be your clients! The very fact that Hashem re-vealed to us how He wants to be called – and that we then have the Chutzpah to call to Hashem by name – indicates a “desire” by Hashem for us to be close to Him. With which vehicle to we become closest? The name Yud – Heh – Vav – Hey, which has the numerical value of 26 (Yud=10, Heh=5, Vav=6, Heh=5).

There is another oft-used name of Hashem, spelled, Aleph-Daled-Nun-Yud (1+4+50+10=65). This Name, literally meaning “Master,” represents the attribute of Din, of Judgment. The Zohar HaKadosh teaches that the purpose our role in this world is “HamTakat HaDin” – taking the attribute of Justice and sweetening it with the attribute of Mercy. Without getting into HOW one does that, the way the Kabbalists indicate this idea is by combining the two names of Hashem (“Tziruf HaSheimot”).

In some Sefardic Siddurim, you may have seen an unfamiliar spelling of Hashem’s Name. It is created by alternating the letters of the Yud-Heh Name of Hashem with the Aleph-Daled Name -נ-ו-ד-ה-א-י

י(. -ה ), This is called the “Tziruf HaSheimot,” the combination of the attribute of Mercy and Judgement. According to the Zohar HaKadosh, it is the Name indicating the GREATEST Mercy. The first Name equals 26, and the second equals 65; the combined Name equals 91.

The number 91 comes up many time in Judaism. We are told on Succot “Go out of your permanent homes (צא מדירת קבע), and go out to the Sukkah (where we rely upon the protection of Hashem). The word “Sukkah” (written fully) is 91 (5=ה ,20=כ ,6=ו ,60=ס), and the

Rabbi Wein RabbiWein.org

The parsha deals initially with the concept of an eternal flame or light that would continually be present on the holy altar in the Mishkan/Tabernacle. This is not the sole instance in the Torah where this concept of an eternal flame, fire or light is discussed. The great golden candelabra in the Mishkan/Tabernacle was also to have one light that was to be deemed an eternal light that was never to be extin-guished. Millennia later, our synagogues commemo-rate this concept of an eternal light in the holy house of prayer with the presence of a ner tamid fixture over the holy ark of the Torah scrolls.

The question arises as to the symbolism and meaning of this eternal fire. Who and what does it represent and what is its message to our society and world. The simple explanation of the eternity of this flame is that it symbolizes God’s constant and un-ending presence in our lives and in the national life of the Jewish people. He is always present even if He is unseen, unrecognized and even purposely ig-nored by His creatures.

The eternal fire reflects the eternity of the Creator, the eternity of Torah and of the people of Israel. In a world where little today is held to be last-ing let alone eternal, the reminder of an eternal flame is necessary and vital. There have been myriad temporary gods that have bedeviled humankind over the ages. The entire pantheon of paganism was built upon differing and constantly changing gods. Only Israel had the vision of a universal, unchanging and eternal God.

But, perhaps there is an even more cogent message from the eternal flame to us. Many times in life we make sacrifices in order to achieve ends that we desire. This is certainly true in the material sphere of our lives. Long hours and great exertion are the norm of our workday lives. Not always are our sacrifices rewarded with social, professional or monetary success and achievement.

We tend then to view them - Cont’d on page 3 Cont’d on page 3

Page 3: Welcome to the DAT Minyan Welcome to the...2016/03/26  · We are proud to announce that this Purim DAT Minyan donated $5000 to Leket, $3136 to Od Yosef Chai, and $650 to local Jews

word “Go” (as in, “Go out from your permanent homes”) is 91 (1=א ,90=צ)/ We rely on Hashem’s mercy when we leave our homes and live under His protection.

The Torah instructs us to not chop down fruit trees, even during a war. The word for a fruit tree – Ilan – equals 91 (50=ן ,30=ל ,10=י ,1=א). By cutting down an Ilan, we are cutting down a symbol of the most powerful name of Hashem. There are many more examples of this, but I’ll spare you. By now, you are proba-bly asking yourself what all this means to me. Well, you now what other word equals 91? “Amen” ( That simple word symbolizes the combined Names of Ha-shem! Do you see where this is going? Last week we said the one who answers Amen is greater than the one who makes the blessing. The person who makes the blessings only says ONE Name of Hashem (“Baruch Ata Hashem”), while the per-son who answers “Amen” responds with BOTH Names of Hashem!

When one answers “Amen” to a blessing, we should have in mind we are saying “Truth” ( .)אמתA second intent is “May it be His will” ( .)כן יהי רצוןHowever, a third intent is to know you are merging the Names of Hashem into a powerful force for good, a powerful tool to help open the Gates of Heaven to allow Hashem’s blessings to shower upon this entire world.

Next time you find yourself talking in shul (Heaven forbid!) during the Repetition of the Amidah, or when an Oleh makes a Beracha over the Torah, or during Kadish, think about what you are losing out on, not only for yourself and your family, but for the entire world! Next time you are about to leave shul early – missing the last Kadish by no more than 3 minutes – think about the number of “Amen”s of which you just deprived the entire world!

Next week, in Part III, I will conclude my “Amen” rant with a story which is truly amazing. Shabbat Shalom!

our efforts and sacrifices - as being in vain and a wasted effort. However we may feel about those material spheres of our lives, this does not hold true for our spiritual efforts and pursuits. No effort, even if it appears to us to be un-successful and even inconsequential, is wasted. The spirit remains eternal.

The rabbis in Avot taught us that according to the effort so is the reward. There are a number of interpre-tations of this cryptic phrase. One meaning is that the effort will be re-warded even if the goal of that effort has not yet been achieved. For effort on behalf of spiritual matters – charity, Torah study, the welfare of the Jewish people, etc. – is blessed with an eternal quality that survives because it be-comes part of our eternal soul. The sac-rifices made on behalf of our souls live on as part of our Godly nature, the eter-nal flame that the Creator has placed within us all.
