Chiles High School - 2013-14
Something for everyone - academics, vocational and technical programs, fine arts, athletics, activity clubs, service clubs and more.
Orientation – Friday before school starts.
Homeroom – Several days during first week to review aspects of high school.
Lockers – available for students, assigned first week of school in homeroom.
Tools available – Planner, online grade system, teacher websites (optional)
Lunch – one lunch time, many menu options, Jrs and Srs may go off campus with grades and parent approval.
Parking lot – very busy at the beginning and end of school.

Articulation ProcessGuidance Department will meet with students at most feeder middle schools to
discuss options and process as well as distribute Course Request Forms. Private
and home school students must complete registration process with the registrar.
Encourage balance of challenging academics, courses of interest and extra
curricular involvement. Students should get involved on our campus!
Credits are earned by passing a semester of a course (yearlong for EOC courses).
Students will have an official record, called a transcript, with unweighted and
weighted grade point average (GPA) after the completion of one semester of a high
school coursework. High school transcript is cumulative for credits and GPA.
Unweighted GPA is based on all courses awarded the standard grading of:A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0
Weighted GPA is based on: Honors and honors gifted courses awarded an extra .5 for a semester grade of a C or better. A = 4.5 B = 3.5 C = 2.5
Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses are awarded an extra 1.0 for a semester grade of C or higher. A = 5.0 B = 4.0 C = 3.0
Graduation Requirements
A four-year, minimum of 24-credits standard program, or A three-year, 18 credit standard college preparatory program, or A three-year, 18 credit career preparatory program
Standard 24 Credit Graduation Requirements English – 4 credits Math – 4 credits (to include Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II) Science – 3 credits to include Biology and Chemistry or Physics) Social Studies – 3 credits ( World History, United States History,
Economics and United States Government) Health Opportunities in Physical Education (HOPE) – 1 credit Fine Art or DOE Approved Practical Art – 1 credit Electives – as needed for a total of 24 credits (8 credits) Earn a 2.0 cumulative unweighted GPA Pass FCAT Reading 2.0 and End Of Course Exams (EOC) for credit in
Algebra I, Geometry and Biology. Complete at least one course for graduation via online learning.
Online Course for Graduation
Options for completing the online course requirement for graduation: Course can be a semester or yearlong course. Course can be taken in middle school as long as it is a high school credit
course. Course may be taken via Leon County Virtual School (LCVS) or Florida
Virtual School (FLVS). Course may be a credit-recovery as long as the student earns high school
credit through online learning.
LCVS – No cost to student. Program run by Leon County Schools which is available during the traditional school calendar (Aug –May) therefore not an option for summer. Registration is open prior to each semester and deadlines apply. Review http://www.leongoesvirtual.net/ for details.
FLVS - No cost to student. Statewide, year-round program. Students can register at any time of the year with no deadlines. It may take a long time to be assigned a teacher in the summer. Review www.flvs.net for details.
Students must request approvals from their guidance counselor for online courses.
Three Strands for 9thGrade Students9th grade students typically enroll in four required courses:
English I (general, honors, honors/gifted)
Math
Science
Health Opportunities in Physical Education (HOPE)
– The traditional track allows students to take World History in 10th grade.
– The Pre-AP program allows for acceleration in the social studies area. Students who participate in Pre-AP enroll in World History Honors a year early to allow them the opportunity to begin taking Advanced Placement coursework in 10th grade.
– The AP Accel program allows for acceleration in the social studies. Students who participate in AP Accel being taking Advanced Placement coursework in 9th grade. Those students enroll in Advanced Placement World History or Advanced Placement Human Geography. In addition, with prerequisites, have the option to enroll in AP Biology or AP Environmental Science.
Registration and Dates to Remember
Early March - Guidance counselors from Chiles visit the middle schools.
March 12 – Curriculum Fair 6:00 – 7:30pm – Chiles Gym
Mid March – Students return completed registration forms to their middle school.
May – Course verification forms mailed home.
August – Freshmen Orientation at Chiles HS on the Friday prior to start of school.

Florida Bright Futures Scholarships Academic Scholars Award - Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a Florida post
secondary institution. Requirements: 3.5 weighted* GPA (16 required academic credits), 1290 SAT or 29 ACT and 100 hours of community service. (Forms and Guidelines available on Chiles website – Guidance link)
Florida Medallion Scholars Award - Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a Florida post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.0 weighted* GPA (16 required academic credits) and 1170 SAT or 26 ACT and 75 hours of community service. (Forms and Guidelines available on Chiles website – Guidance link)
16 required academic credits include:4 English4 Math (Algebra I level and higher)3 Science3 Social Science2 Foreign Language (in the same language)
The SAT and ACT writing subtests will not be used for determining Bright Futures eligibility.
Statewide Scholarship Weighting awards .25 per semester for honors, AP and DE
courses with a “C” or higher. Advanced foreign language is not honors for BF.
Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award - Pro-rated per hour tuition
coverage for a vocational/technical program at a FL post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.0 weighted GPA (16 required credits for graduation), 3.5 GPA in a 3 credit vocational program, 30 hours of community service, (Forms and Guidelines available on Chiles website – Guidance link) and a passing score on a college placement test (SAT 440 verbal & math, ACT 18 Reading, 17 English, 19 Math or CPT 83 Reading & Sentence Skills, 72 Algebra)

Juniors who wish to take college coursework in their Senior year may sign up for the Dual Enrollment Program through Tallahassee Community College
Students may gain as many as 18 hours of college credit in the senior year
Requirements:– 3.0 unweighted GPA AND (one of the following)– SAT 440+ Verbal 550+ Math– ACT 17+ English 21+ Math 18+ Reading– FPERT 99+ English 123+ Math 104+ Reading
The FPERT is given on campus, free of charge for all Juniors.
