A message from Fr. Jake….. Happy Parish Feast Day! This weekend we celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of Our Lady of Victory, which is linked to the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). Our parish has now been witnessing to Jesus Christ for 59 years here in Northwest Davenport, so we definitely have many things to thank God for as we celebrate our past and look forward to the future. Again, Happy Feast Day to everyone! As we celebrate our anniversary as a parish, I want to talk a little bit about stewardship because of the amazing ways that stewardship has been displayed in this parish. Stewardship is the term that is used to describe how each of us is called by God to do two actions. First and foremost, we are called to acknowledge the gifts that we have in our lives. Each of us are blessed in different ways, so we should not compare ourselves to each other as we thank God for the unique gifts that he has poured into our lives. Once we acknowledge these gifts, we are then called by God to use these gifts in service of Him and others. The parish's growth over the last 59 years has happened because thousands of parishioners and friends of the parish have recognized that God has blessed them in their lives, and as a result, they gave of the gifts in their lives to help the parish grow and thrive. This amazing tradition continues. We have an amazing history of loving God and loving neighbor. As I conclude my article, I want to recognize in a special way the founding members of OLV who are still with us here in our parish. Every year God calls home a few more of these amazing parishioners, but those who remain are living witnesses of how stewardship is done. Please thank them for all they have done to get OLV to where we are at today. Happy Feast Day, and as always we ask: Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!

The annual Diocesan Appeal is an opportunity for us to be good stewards of God’s gifts as we share with other Catholics our treasure and our blessings and show our love for one another. The ADA gives us the opportunity to act together as a family of faith and support the programs and services no single individual or parish can offer by themselves. Your gift is important. Every gift, regardless of size, is vital to the success of the Appeal.

October is Respect LIfe Month. God created everyone.

We are made in the image and likeness of God.

All human beings are entitled to basic dignity and respect.

Respect is the foundation of all human relationships.

Human beings naturally strive for goodness. In those efforts they must be respected and supported.

This year during Respect Life Month we turn to St. Joseph as our role model.

He took Mary into his home.

He guided the Holy Family to Bethlehem.

He welcomed Jesus as his son.

He fled from his homeland for the safety of Mary and Jesus.

He never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted to him.

Dearest St. Joseph, help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life - especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen USCCB © 2021

Spotlight on Music Ministry

Liturgy is the central means by which we gather, are strengthened, and are sent back into the world to carry out the preaching, teaching and healing of Christ. Visit the Gathering Space to

learn more about ways to become more richly involved in our Masses through MUSIC. Do you like to sing? Do you play a musical instrument? If so, you are invited to share your talent with the Adult Choir, Contemporary Music Group, as a cantor, or instrumentalist. Once singing is again permitted at our liturgies, musicians and vocalists will be needed at most Masses throughout the year. Adult Choir is open to anyone in High School and above. The Contemporary Group welcomes those in 8th grade and above. The season for both groups is September – May. Please take a moment to check us out and prayerfully consider joining one of these important ministries.

October is Downs Syndrome Awareness Month Down syndrome is one of the most common types of intellectual disabilities. Down syndrome is a condition in which a person is born with an extra chromosome, the packets of genes that determine how our bodies form and function. A baby is typically born with 46 chromosomes, but a baby with Down syndrome has an extra copy or part of a copy of one of those chromosomes, chromosome 21. Down syndrome can also cause intellectual and developmental symptoms that lead to cognitive impairment, which means challenges with thinking and learning. Like the physical symptoms, they vary and can range from mild to moderate. Some common cognitive problems include:

Short attention span

Poor judgment

Impulsive behavior

Slow learning

Delayed language and speech development People with Down syndrome are just like everyone else. They have similar dreams and goals, and they want to have successful careers and families. They can drive, go to work, go to college, go on dates, get married, and contribute to society. They can also participate in sports.

Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in the general population. In the absence of screening, it is estimated that only 50 percent of patients with major depression are identified. Untreated depression is associated with decreased quality of life , increased risk of suicide, and poor physiological outcomes. In this weeks Cozy Corner Carol Burns RN, will discuss why it is so important to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of depression.

The last quarter of the year is an ideal time to consider a gift to the Our Lady of Victory Foundation. Individuals 70.5 and older are required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA. A regular RMD adds to taxable income for the year. Another option is to direct the RMD to the

Foundation via a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). The QCD is not included as taxable income on your tax return and can minimize overall tax liability. A lower adjusted gross income may also trigger a reduction in taxable Social Security benefits and/or in future Medicare premiums. Although the gift via a QCD is not a charitable deduction under the current tax law, fewer people will qualify for itemized deductions. Contact your IRA administrator and discover how simple it may be to elect a QCD for your RMD.

Nourish is for anyone juggling the challenges of life, health and career while caring for a disabled child, aging parent, grandparent, or spouse, either in your home, in town or at a distance. Nourish provides family caregivers practical and emotional support, shared experiences and useful tools, all with a Christ-centered view. Come, join us and discover the blessings in caring for another. Our next meeting is Thursday, October 14th at 1pm, via ZOOM. Please email: [email protected] with your email to receive the ZOOM link to the meeting. We hope to be able to meet again in person in the near future.
