Job Search Stress

Things to guard yourself against

Allowing stress to take root works against YOUYOU– Mistakes increase and push you into uncomfortable positions– Desire to rise up early to check the fruits of your labors

diminish– Anger and bitterness weaken your focus on what is important– Fear begins to grip every decision you try to make– You may begin feeling like no one knows what you are going

through– You may begin to feel as though no one, perhaps even

yourself, cares– You may begin to blame others for your condition– Discouragement and apathy ruin your witness

Calvary Chapel South Bay 18

Organization is one key to lowering Stress

Solution: Start a Log - journal your journey. Include the following:

– Who, what, and when (how, where, and why if applicable)

– Key notes on what position you are inquiring about

– Doesn’t matter if you call, send a resume, cover letter, or stop to see them – make the list – you will be glad you did

– Indicate which resume you sent them!*Very important if you are qualified for multiple positions

Prepare and Rehearse your “Elevator Speech”

• What is an Elevator Speech?– This is a 15-30 second speech to the prospective employer’s question,

“Why should I hire you?”

• It's called an "Elevator Speech" because it describes the challenge– Example: You happen to be in an elevator with a prospective employer.

How you explain who you are and what you have to offer? Should take no more time than it takes to get from the top to the bottom floor.

• You have 15-30 seconds to make a powerful first impression– The average attention span is just 30 seconds before our mind starts

wandering – The other reason is that may be all the time you get

Additional Helps

Get help setting up your email if you do not have one! Many companies only use the Internet for applications.

– Applications must be completed in their entirety, even if you supplied a resume. It is often how companies will disqualify you.

– Use correct grammar and punctuation.– Applying on-line can be very frustrating so have a follow-up plan.– After you apply, send a cover letter and résumé to the hiring

manager notifying them of your application.– Give them about 10 days before making a follow up call.

Get help setting up profiles and search engines– This will tremendously increase your potential for employment.

Libraries offer help and resources.– http://www.colapublib.org/libs/index.php

Troubleshooting

Not being selected for a position, is not the end of the world.– In fact it is common. Not every qualified person receives the

interview, let alone lands the job – don’t make it too personal.– It is manageable – each opportunity presents a learning

experience for the next so build upon it – put it to work for you.

Invite the Lord into the job search with you.– JesusJesus understand rejection!understand rejection!

Guard yourself from thinking that your initial efforts are all that are required in your search process.– Consider a farmer; who hoes a row, plants seeds, waters,

fertilizes, weeds, waters some more, then waits … and waits… and waits…

– Keep planting, following up, be patient, be diligent

– Your search will bear fruit in due seasonCalvary Chapel South Bay 31

Troubleshooting

Not getting the results you expected? Go back to the basics.– Check your search engine profile– Is it too wordy or too specific– Not specific enough or missing data– Is the information correct– Key words and phrases – terms used drive

response– Resume format may effect response as well

Calvary Chapel South Bay 32

Job Search Encouragement

Pray and ask God where He wants you to be.

– Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” NKJV

– Turn to God, ask for clarity and help put things into perspective.
