MASCC • Supportive Care makes excellent cancer care possible Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer • www.mascc.org May 2018 As I write my penultimate President’s Report for the Society News, I reflect back on the past two years. As I had anticipated, it has been a time of significant transition for MASCC and an exciting challenge to lead. With Åge Schultz’s retirement from the position of Executive Director, we were delighted to find and appoint Melissa Chin to lead us into the 21st century. The office successfully moved from Copenhagen to Toronto. We were then faced with the task of appointing a successor to Study Group Coordinator and Development Manager Anne Young. Don Gubitosa came to us with a wealth of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and served us well, but resigned after a year for personal reasons. Early this year, we welcomed Leslie Johnson into these roles. She has hit the ground running and continued the development of well-defined procedures for Study Groups and well-articulated expectations for their performance. Given all of these changes, we took the opportunity to revise and simplify our Bylaws and Articles of Association with our new legal advisors. These documents needed updating, but also need to allow flexibility of operations within the organization. Another important matter up for renewal was our MOU with our partners at ISOO. As ISOO expands, we need to achieve the balance of providing support, while allowing sufficient independence for ISOO to continue growing in its own right. We look forward to continuing our strong association. Perhaps the most important exercise for our future has been the strategic planning process last year. We engaged with the Board and many of our members to review in detail the opportunities for growth in most of our activities, and we brought the group together in a meeting prior to the Washington Annual Meeting. My successor, President-Elect Raj Lalla joined me in this endeavor to ensure that the process set an agenda for at least three years. Of several initiatives strongly endorsed last year, that of broader engagement through social media will be prominent at this year’s Annual Meeting in Vienna. Our Annual Meeting is the mainstay of MASCC. The Adelaide meeting in 2016 signaled several changes to better equip us for expansion. The meeting has incorporated digital methods through e-posters, presentations, and apps to provide meeting materials. We have revamped our website so as to better support the meeting and other activities. We are also ensuring that speakers represent the breadth of our membership. Over the last couple of years, we have opened up the Presidential dinner to more attendees and created a more vibrant event, which will continue in Vienna. We are also going to the marketplace to see what other Professional Conference Organizers (PCOs) can offer us to keep our meeting fresh and engaging. A great pleasure during my tenure as President has been to see increased participation beyond the USA and Europe, with the addition of supportive care researchers and practitioners from Southeast Asia. Continued. NEWS Welcome to the May Issue of the MASCC Society News This month, Ian Olver reviews MASCC’s progress toward numerous goals over the past two years of his term as President. We bring you an exciting sneak-peek at the upcoming Annual Meeting. We urge all members to get involved in Study Groups, noting that the Annual Meeting presents a good opportunity to find out more about groups that might match your interests. As usual, we include several conference reminders and deadlines. We extend a warm welcome to new members who joined us in March. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC! All issues of the MASCC Society News are available online at www.mascc.org/society-news.
