Winner: PrimaryMoriah CollegeSculpture by the Seeds Project

The Primary School established a dedicated garden where children can understand what is involved in growing food, and the impacts

we all have on the environment by the decisions we make and the importance of living sustainably. Over 40 students attend the Garden Club and have developed a real

sense of ownership and understanding of the responsibility involved in looking after it. The garden’s design was incorporated into maths

and science lessons, The Sculpture by the Seeds component also involved their families

in order to collect the appropriate recycled materials and plan their sculpture.

Public SchoolLivestock Project

Randwick Public School has added some vibrant new members to it's growing menagerie of possums, birds, lizards,

vegetables, compost microorganisms, native plants and fruit trees this year. Three chooks and two goats. Having livestock as part of the

school's kitchen-garden food web, has deepened the students understanding of the importance of biodiversity to producing fresh food, natural pest management and organics recycling. Children from K-6 are involved in a roster of collecting eggs, cleaning droppings,

cleaning water, feeding animals and designing the set up of enclosures.

Winner: Child CareMoriah College

Caring for our World (Tikkun Olam)The project is a collaboration between the College ELCs and a communal organisation. The

project helps to instil, teach and inspire children and their families to create a community of change makers. Each class is allotted a hessian Tikkun Olam bag, which contains two story books, along with the class Tikkun Olam project book, for the child to add their own entry. Many children's entries relate to the environment, recycling, worm farming, composting, gardening, tree planting, not wasting water and electricity, picking up litter and packing

waste free lunches. Each child's entry creates a conversation in the classroom about what others do at home and how it compares to school, which activates behaviours of change.

This project allowed for children to explore ways of reducing, reusing, and recycling, and to let them be co-builders and shapers of their centre. The project

originated as a way of repurposing recycled materials from two streams – commercial and

natural. Children were encouraged to build things like a cubby house out of old pallets, and a mud

kitchen out of old timber and a sink. Children were able to use their imaginations, and realise that

‘waste’ can be a resource. As a result, children are now active rustic repurposers.

sustainability improvement. Their project targeted recycling, energy-saving and waste management. This includes a focus

on enhancing student leadership, allowing students to inspire change themselves within the school and local community.

Eco Warriors are representatives of each class elected by their peers, who attend fortnightly meetings where goals are set and strategies created. They take on class, stage and school-

based activities to improve the environment.

Coogee Public SchoolPaper Free Fridays Project

Paper Free Friday is a project which was initiated by a boy in year 4. The idea came about at school when he was learning about what it means to be sustainable and how even small

changes can make positive differences. This inspired him to come up with the idea of encouraging every class from K - 6 at Coogee Public School to cease using paper every

Friday. The idea was received so well by the school, that the teachers decided they should aim for as many paper-free days a week, and the results from each class are shown every

Monday morning at assembly.

South Coogee Public SchoolSCPS Sustainability Transformation Project

South Coogee have been on a journey to improve the schools sustainability practices which included programs on biodiversity, recycling, reducing electricity usage and waste minimisation. A new teacher-led Sustainability Committee was formed to support the needs of the school. New Eco Warrior student leadership activities and goals were established in order for students to lead the shaping, supporting and sustaining reform. As a result of the sustainability transformation this year, there has been significant improvement in all areas of the school environment, and sustainable behaviours are very much engrained in the school ethos.
