Story Time

CLARE GARDEN by Beth Summers

There is a Franciscan Friary at Hillfields in Dorset where one can go on retreat. I decided to spent a week there as a mini break.

When I arrived I was surprised to see the friars dressed in working clothes of shorts and trainers. I must say I was a bit disappointed; I was looking forward to them being in their traditional dress of brown robes,

cords tied about their waist with the three knots; chastity, humility and obedience.

After a brief interview with the abbot I was shown to my little room with a single bed, sink and small table. It was one of many on the site and overlooked a huge garden which, by the look of it, could have done with a sort out! It was called the Clare garden, named after Sister Clare who followed the teachings of St. Francis and formed her own community.

The evening meal was rather drear though. It was obvious that there wasn’t a decent cook amongst the friars, who numbered about fifty – the meal was taken in silence whilst listening to a friar reading out from a novel – not one of very good taste I must add! It was a rather saucy tale which, as I was the only woman at the table, I found embarrassing and fled to the small chapel at the bottom of the garden! I’m sure that in their original day the book would have been a holy one!

The next morning there was communion. It was explained that there was polyphonic singing – the two sides of the choir alternatively chanting and reciting the prayers. The communion was gentle and quiet and I could almost see the Lord overshadow the friar who was taking it. I had made friends with a young Buddhist who sat at the back, explaining that he wasn’t allowed to take part.

I took it upon myself to find a spade and fork to dig over the huge flower bed in the middle of the Clare garden. One of the brothers came over to me with a paper bag in his hand, containing fritillaries. It seemed that he had bought them but not sure how or where to plant them. He was so pleased to see me taking care of the garden “You seem to know what you’re doing” he said and handed me the bag.

I was touched by this and planted them around the base of an oak tree in the grounds. I wonder if they are still there today.
