Care

For the last three months we have had a Eucharistic Benediction Healing Service on the first Tuesday of the month to end our monthly day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We have been averaging between 40 and 50 people attending. I have heard many positive reactions to the service. In our times of darkness in the world and church Jesus comes to us in the Eucharist as a beacon of light to bring healing and peace. He calls us to His Sacred Heart to find peace and unconditional love. If you are looking for a Lenten practice to grow deeper in the Lord and experience His Divine Healing please join us this month or in the months to come. The following testimonial comes from a woman who attended last month.

Jesus invites us to come to Him for healing. I attended the Healing Prayer Service on Tuesday, February 4th. I started with Adoration and at 6:15 p.m. Deacon Ed Garza led the service with prayer and song. We were invited to come forward for personal healing prayers. Jesus laid hands on the sick and I have several family members dealing with sickness. I attended for them. As I sat in the chair in front of the Eucharist I was prayed over by (don’t remember his name) and I felt very open to the Holy Spirit. I simply asked Jesus to heal my loved ones and graces for myself as well. I felt a burst of warmth, tears flowed and my heart was full of joy. I knew the Holy Spirit was burning inside of me. I felt God’s presence and He comforted me by letting me know to simply to trust and He would hear my prayers. The whole experience gave me consolation and I was overwhelmed with the love of Christ.

"The Spirit of God is on me. He anointed me to bring Good News to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted and to free the oppressed" (Is. 61:1).

A Fresh Start By Debbie Chalik

Every year during Lent, I go through my personal qualities and try to decide what needs to be upgraded. You would think that at some point in my life the list would get shorter. Sadly, that is not yet the case.

So here I go again: take inventory, evaluate, identify areas of potential improvement, go to confession.

Ironically, the easiest item on my above list is: go to confession. The hard part is changing my behavior.

Not a problem! I will keep trying. Luckily, I get another chance to try again every single year! After all, faith is a journey.

For that reason, I have added the parish reconciliation service to my personal calendar (with an alert). Join us on March 31 at 6pm (dinner) and 7pm (reconciliation service). Not only will you get a great meal, but also a fresh start. It’s truly one of the benefits to being Catholic!

#3. Moses, let the land have a break

Remember, God owns the earth. As the owner of everything, he makes his desires for his creation known. We see just one example of this in Leviticus 25:1-5.

In this passage, the LORD told Moses to let the people farm the land for six years, but to make them take a break from farming the ground in the seventh year.

What does this have to do with stewardship in the Bible?

Simple.

From this passage, we see that God owns the earth, he oversees the growth of produce, and he knows how to handle his land.

In partnership with the Food Bank of Iowa, Sacred Heart’s St. Vincent de Paul administers a food pantry in Sacred Heart School for school families in need.

We have been selected by the HyVee at 1900 Grand Ave. as the non-profit of the month in their Reusable Bag Program!!! Every reusable bag sold in the month of March at the Grand Ave store will provide $1 to our Food Pantry!

If you shop at another HyVee store, you can complete the giving tag attached to the purchased bag by designating Sacred Heart Food Pantry and we will get the $1 donation by HyVee.

The Sacred Heart Reconciliation dinner is back by popular demand! Please join us on Tuesday, March 31st. You will not want to miss it. Maid-rites, macaroni and cheese, desserts, and Fr. Nipin trivia are

The Gospel According to Matthew - Part 1 Bible Study

This Lent join us in a bible study, The Gospel According to Matthew - Part 1. This study will focus on the life of Jesus from birth through much of his public teaching life and to the first part of his passion. St. Gemma Gift Donations

Please donate needed items to Sacred Heart’s St. Gemma Gift bags ministry on Saturday, March 7th and Sunday, March 8th in the blue tote in the gathering space. Sacred Heart keeps these gift bags on hand to give to those less fortunate than we are. Perhaps someone you pass downtown or on an exit ramp. Prayers

and St. Gemma medals are also included in each gift. Items most needed: Individual packaged trail m ix, beef jerky, nuts, granola bars, hand wipes, hand warmers, bandages, Neosporin, hotel/travel size toiletries, and small bags of hand sanitizer wipes (please no liquid/alcohol-based hand sanitizer bottles).

CRS Rice Bowl Pick Up

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action program. It offers opportunities for your family to engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. And it’s an opportunity for us as a parish to come together as a community and reflect on what it means to live

out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl after Mass. Rice Bowls should be returned during Holy Week.

Catherine Burch is a huge help around Sacred Heart Parish! She works hard to help clean the Sacred Heart church and church offices. Catherine keeps our church and parish campus in pristine condition! Catherine voluntarily stopped in the last two Friday's to dust the church offices! Shelves, walls, ceilings, vents,

desks....you name it, she dusted it! Catherine’s hard work is greatly appreciated by everyone who enters the church appreciates her meticulous attention to detail that she gives to making our church shine! Thank you, Catherine, for giving your tireless time and energy to Sacred Heart Church and being a wonderful Active Apostle in our community!

Ministry Training

Don’t just sit there, join the celebration! All Sacred Heart parishioners are encouraged to get trained in at least one Liturgical Ministry. Students can earn service hours for any Mass participation. All training is in the church, no need to RSVP, just show up for any session.

The Knights of Columbus are once again sponsoring our semi-annual Sacred Heart Blood Drive, to be held on Thursday, March 5 from 2:00 – 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. Women’s Guild Grants Available in 2020

Annually, the Sacred Heart Women’s Guild raises funds to support Sacred Heart Church and School. If your ministry or program might benefit from this support, the required Application for Funds’ link is on Sacred Heart Parish’s website at sacredheartwdm.org/news. Hard copies also are available in the gathering space’s information center. The deadline for requests is April 30. SoulCore Class

Please join us for Mind and Body Movement to the Rosary right here at Sacred Heart! SoulCore Classes are held every Tuesday evening from 5;45 –6:45 pm in the Sacred Heart Parish Center—Our Lady of Guadalupe room. Please bring a mat or towel.

Donut Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to host donuts on Sunday March 15 after the 9:30 Mass. Please sign up at https://signup.com/go/YGUzJVK. Donuts are already ordered, paid for and delivered to Sacred Heart. All we need is a friendly host. This is a great opportunity for ministries at Sacred Heart to promote what they do while serving donuts.

Casseroles for the Family Violence Center - March 7/8

Thank you for providing meals to the Center…helping those families in need of shelter and basic necessities when they need it most.

Our goal is 20 casseroles per month – we can do it!! There a several options in providing meals – here are just a few ideas: Hamburger, Chicken or Tuna Helper, Tuna and Noo-dles or Chicken and rice, or Chili or Hearty Soups (in an ice cream container—please no zip lock bags for soup) Printed recipes ideas and guidelines are located at the back of Church or you may visit: www.sacredheartwdm.org/family-violence-center-casseroles.

You can be creative! The Center requests a protein in each casserole to be used as a main course for a family meal - beef, chicken, pork, tuna, etc. Drop off frozen casseroles after Masses on March 7/8. This is a great project for group service hours!

Irish Shenanigans: March 16 Save the Date!

Plans are underway for a social hour, Irish meal and a bunch of blarney (aka entertainment) the evening of Monday, March 16 in the Parish Center as the Knights of Columbus and the Women’s Guild celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

together. The Guild will help with set-up and appetizers. Sign-up and other details coming your way soon!

Night of Service: March 24th From the Heartland; For the Hungry

Guild members are invited to volunteer for the next Meals from the Heartland packaging night. Join us from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, March 24 for this service project. Please arrive 15 minutes early for instructions from the Meals from the Heartland staff. Please pull

Café Connection St. Vincent de Paul Partnership

Every month, year round, we ask five Guild members to each bake/bring three dozen cookies to supplement the lunch that our parish St. Vincent de Paul group prepares for the hungry downtown. Thanks and a reminder

to our March crew--to deliver by 10 am, Monday, March 2 in the parish center kitchen: Robin Breen Fulton, Renee Raap, Mary Mathis , Kim Tyma & Lore McManus Solo. From April onward, we still have open slots for an upcoming Monday. Here’s the sign-up link: https://signup.com/go/ZdhcUWQ

We also have new opportunities to buy/bake desserts on 2nd Thursday for this ministry for the months of March, May, June, August and November. We have sign-up forms at each meeting for the Thursday monthly baking donations. For March 12, we thank and remind these volunteers: Darlene Cangas, Carole Hays, Joanne Boeckman & Stephanie Latting. Drop them off before 10 am on March 12 to the Parish center.

All treats should be labeled for SVDP on the containers (to avoid confusion with other events such as funerals, etc.)

School Appreciation

There’s been a change of date from Valentine’s Day (when there was an abundance of sweets) to just before spring break—March 12. Stephanie Latting will deliver muffins, fruit and K-cups to the school to show our appreciation for our teachers and administrative staff.

This 12-week group begins March 23rd at 6 pm in The Blessed Mother Room, 820 Porter Ave, Des Moines, on the Christ the King Campus. Marriage Sponsor Couple Training

Our next Des Moines area Sponsor Couple training is scheduled for Saturday, March 14 from 3-6 p.m. at the Catholic Pastoral Center in downtown Des Moines. This training is for any couple that would like to assist engaged couples as they prepare for the sacrament of marriage. All materials and snacks are provided. NPM Passion Musical Presentation

Holy Trinity Parish and the Knights of Columbus, in collaboration with the Des Moines Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), will be offering a musical presentation of the Passion during Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 27, 2020 @ 5:30 p.m. This Passion is done entirely to music and narration, promoting a deeper understanding of Christ's suffering and Passion in a way only music can often facilitate. The Passion will be conducted by Dr. Kevin Allemagne. If you are a musician and interested in participating in the choir, please contact him at [email protected]. The Knights of Columbus will be providing a fish dinner for purchase following the service. Please prayerfully consider participating in this unique opportunity for discernment and reflection as part of your Lenten journey this year.
