Now you have a book in your hands. It might be fiction or it might be nonfiction. It looks interesting to you, but is it a good

fit?Try the Five-Finger test.

Open the book to any page. Make a fist with one hand. Start reading. Raise one finger any time you don’t know a word.

0-1 This book will be easy. Have fun reading it, but pick a more challenging book too.

2 This book is a good fit. Dig in!!!

3 This book might be a bit challenging, but it’s worth a try. Enjoy.

4-5 A book from this range may be very difficult to read. Save it for another time, or read it with an adult or older sibling.

I can’t read all these books right now. Can I take them out of the

library?

YES!!! Your class will come to the library each week. At that time you will choose books and check them out.

•Kindergarten and first grade students check out 1 book each week.•2nd and 3rd grade students check out two books per week.•4th and 5th grade students check out three books per week.

Books can be checked out for up to two weeks before they are overdue. If you need more time, we can renew most books.

Check out time will be 10 minutes at the end of your library period. Make good use of your time. Look for good books, check them

out, and sit down and read quietly until time to line

up.

Library books are shared by all of the people in our school. When you check out, please Take good care of our books so that they will look nice for the person who checks them out after you.

Keep your books in a safe place like your book bag or on a special shelf at your home. This will keep them from pets or younger siblings and you will know where they are when it is time to return them. Keep food and water out of your book bag when your books are in there. Accidents happen every year!

Clean hands = clean books

Please keep food and drinks away from your books. Sticky hands = Sticky books. Yuck!

Always use a bookmark to keep your place. No turning over page corners or leaving the book

opened upside down.

Simple, right? Follow these rules and our books will look nice for each person who

checks them out.

If a book is lost or damaged, you must pay for it before your are allowed to check out

another one. We don’t want that to happen. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BOOKS!

Am I allowed

to talk in the

library?

YES!!! Of course you know That you are not allowed to talk during

lessons! The SASMS rules apply in the library.

During check out time or when working on an assignment, you may speak at

Level 1 or Level 2. You are required to stay on task.

Do not get together in a group in a corner and monkey around.

That will get you into trouble!

Just like we share library books with others in the school, we

share the library space with those in our class.

Page 9: Welcome to the sasms media center magazine

Sharing space in the library is easy. Everyone knows that we keep low voices so that others can read or do their work without disruption. What are the other rules?

Just remember WE SHARE!

Walking feet please.

verything in its place.

elp others if you can.

sk if you need help.

espectful and responsible.

njoy yourself!

The library is a place for fun and creativity!

Make Good Choices.
