Message of the Week

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist” there is

the temptation to “beset the just one” with

“revilement and torture.” This is what Jesus reveals

to his disciples: he is to be “handed over to men and

they will kill him.” The disciples’ staggering response

is to squabble among themselves about “who was the

greatest.” “Where do the conflicts among you come

from?” From “your passions that make war within,”

spurring us to “kill and envy.” Yet, for all our covet-

ing, we do not possess. So Jesus puts his arms

around a child, in order to receive this little one we

must be pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy—so

much better than fighting and waging war. We “have

proof of his gentleness” in the desire to be gentle that

Jesus generates in us.

Vigésimo quinto domingo en el tiempo ordinario

“Donde existen los celos y la ambición egoísta "existe

la tentación de" acosar a los justos "con" injuria y tor-

tura ". Esto es lo que Jesús revela a sus discípulos: él

debe ser "entregado a los hombres y ellos lo matarán".

La asombrosa respuesta de los discípulos es pelear

entre ellos sobre "quién fue el más grande". "¿de

dónde vienen los conflictos entre ustedes?" De "tus

pasiones que hacen la guerra dentro", que nos estimu-

lan a "matar y envidiar". Sin embargo, por toda nues-

tra codicia, no poseemos. Así que Jesús pone sus

brazos alrededor de un niño, para recibir a este

pequeño debemos ser puros, pacíficos, apacibles,

llenos de misericordia — mucho mejor que luchar y

emprender una guerra. "tenemos la prueba de su dul-

zura" en el deseo de ser gentiles que Jesús genera en

nosotros.
