WHAT IS PHONICS?Phonics is all about using skills for reading and spelling and the
knowledge of the alphabet. Learning phonics will help your child
to become a good reader and writer.
Words are made up from small units of sound called
phonemes.
Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and
identify the phonemes that make up each word.

WHAT IS TAUGHT?In phonics lessons children are taught three main aspects:
GPCs
This stands for Grapheme Phoneme Correspondences. This simply means that
they are taught all the phonemes in the English language and the ways of
writing them down.
Blending
This is when children say the sounds that make up a word and are able to
merge the sounds together until they can hear what the word is. This skill is vital
in learning to read.
Segmenting
Children are able to say or hear a word and then break it up into the phonemes
that make it up. This skill is vital in being able to spell words.

OTHER KEY TERMINOLOGY
Digraph - A grapheme containing two letters that makes just one sound (phoneme).
Split digraph- When a digraph is split by a consonant it becomes a split digraph.
For example: wrote – the 'o-e' here make one sound.
Trigraph - A grapheme containing three letters that makes just one sound (phoneme).

DAILY PHONICS
• Every day the children will have a 15-20 minute session of phonics.
• Lessons are fast paced and encompass a range of games, songs, and
rhymes.
• We use the Letters and Sounds planning document to support the teaching
of phonics.
• There are 6 phonics phases which the children work through at their own
pace.

In Phase 2, letters and their sounds are introduced one at a time. A set of letters is taught each week, in the following sequence:

Phase 4 doesn’t introduce any new phonemes.
It focuses on consolidating children’s learning from phases
2 and 3 and focuses on reading and spelling longer words
with the phonemes they already know.

ends of words.

PHONICS SCREENING CHECK
The Year 1 phonics screening check is not a formal test, but a way
for teachers to ensure that children are making sufficient progress
with their phonics skills and that they are on track to become
fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.
The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that a child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher.
Each of the non-words is presented with a picture of a monster/
alien, as if the word were their name.

. Teacher always conducts the check.
. If a child is unsuccessful, they will retake the check
in Year 2 and one to one phonics interventions will be
carried out throughout the year.
