What is Title I and How Can I be Involved?

Title I provides federal funding to schools to help students who are low achieving or at most risk of falling behind.

Title I is allocated to schools based on the percentage of student receiving free/reduced lunch.

Schools with a percentage of at least 40% are eligible for a school-wide program.

Definition of Title I:

MES operates a Title I School-wide

Program.

• The school uses Title I funds to upgrade the entire educational program of the school.

• Title I funds are used to serve all children in order to raise academic achievement.

• Title I funds will be used to provide additional assistance to all students who experience difficulties in meeting the State’s performance targets.

School-wide means:

• The school must have a free/reduced lunch count of at least 40%.

• The school must collect and analyze data that effects student achievement.

• The school must develop a comprehensive site plan and annually review the effectiveness of the plan.

Title I Task Force Team:

McDonough Elementary School will provide a high quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective environment that enables students to meet the state’s academic standards. We will provide academic assistance for students through parent workshops, materials in Parent Resource Center and MTSS meetings on their child.

Opportunities will be provided for parents to volunteer and participate in their student’s class and observe classroom activities.

Summary:

85% of Fifth Grade students will meet or exceed on the Georgia Writing Assessment.

Students in K-2 will show a two stage increase on IKAN /GLOSS assessment. They will show at least a three-level increase on Fountas and Pinnell.

Students in grades 3-5 will show an increase from 85% to 92% meeting/exceeding on the math portion of CRCT. Students will show an increase from 29% to 33% exceeding on the reading portion of CRCT.

Teachers will participate in regularly scheduled professional learning to strengthen instructional strategies.

Parent Involvement will be increased at MES by providing events that promote interaction with parents and staff.

Focus Goals

MES has three instructional coaches to support teachers in their delivery of the curriculum.

MES has certified tutors who will assist students in areas of need.

MES has additional instructional resources for teachers and students.

Title I Parent Notification Requirements

A copy of the Parent Involvement Policy will be available on the school website, in the school office, and in the school Parent Resource Room 104. If changes are needed, they will be made a part of the McDonough Elementary School Outreach Compact and sent home to all families.

A draft of our Title 1 School Compact for Student Achievement is available this evening. Please review the draft and feel free to provide input.

The revised 2013-2014 Compact will be sent to all families. It will also be posted in several locations, such as the school website, the school office, and the Parent Resource Room 104.

Parent’s Right to Know – Student Achievement

Schools are required to notify parents if their child has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher that is not highly qualified.

How Can You Be Involved?

Parents are invited to participate at McDonough Elementary School in the following ways:

Join our MES Title Task Force which plans parent involvement activities for our families

Participate in fundraisers and plan school events

Join our newly formed PTO

Help teachers by copying papers, decorating bulletin boards, and helping with other classroom needs

Present at Career Day

Become volunteer tutors for our MES students

Participate in parent/teacher conferences

Parent Involvement Opportunities

Upon the request of parents, the school must provide opportunities for regular meetings for parents to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children.

The school must respond to any such suggestions as soon as possible.
