Curriculum

• Eureka Math- hands-on work with worksheets that is aligned to Common Core standards.

Very similar to Engage New York In Kindergarten the focus is on number

recognition, the meaning of numbers, one-to-one correspondence, identifying shapes, adding/subtracting….

Curriculum continued

Orton Gillingham • Letter recognition, phonemic awareness,

decoding strategies, sight word recognition • Systematic, sequential, multisensory, explicit

and flexible • Phonics is whole group • Direct to Draw

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

• Encourages college and career readiness and success in students.

• Thursdays are college and career t-shirt day. • Focuses on students Social and Emotional

Learning • Our school goal is to work on Costa’s Levels of

questioning.

Curriculum continued

Zoophonics • This is a supplementary program that

connects animals to each letter of the alphabet. Each letter has a whole body movement to reinforce the sound.

Homework

• Homework will be sent home every Monday. • Daily math and language arts assignments • Monthly Calendar- complete 3 activities a

week and answer questions on the back. • Return every Friday along with Yellow

Thursday folder.

Homework continued

• In addition please read, read, read to your child. There is a weekly reading log. Take every opportunity to point out print! At breakfast, at the store, driving…..

• Monday-Wednesday a book will be sent home in a Ziploc bag for your child to read that night and return the following day.

Cooking Center

• Every Friday we will have a cooking center! We need parents to sign up to bring the ingredients for that week. I will let you know as soon as I plan what ingredients we will need!

Personality Bag

• Every Thursday the Personality Bag will go home with one child. They are to fill it with items that tell who they are. What is their favorite smell, color, food, etc..

The bag is then shared the following Thursday.

Tony the Tiger

• A student will take home Tony the Tiger-our reading buddy.

Tony comes with a couple of books, backpack, journal and instructions!

Field Trips

• We will have at least one field trip to the Pumpkin Patch and chaperones will definitely be welcomed! The date is still unknown. The fee is usually $10 per person. No siblings.

Birthdays

• I would love to celebrate your child’s birthday. Spring Grove’s new Wellness Program wants

us to celebrate once a month. We will celebrate the second Thursday of each month. So if you would like to bring in treats the month of your child’s birthday please contact me ahead of time. I will also remind parents in my newsletter.

Clothing

• Please send an extra set of clothing to school, labeled and in a baggie (don’t forget the socks)!

Label everything!!

Specials

• We have computers every Tuesday and Wednesday in the library.

• We have 4th grade reading buddies on Thursdays from 12:35-1:00.

• Music every Friday • Fun Friday • Yoga

Important Dates

• Kindergarten Fall Festival meeting is in room 13 (our classroom) on September 24th at 2:20.

• Picture Day is September 11th. • Fall Festival is on October 25th. Please be sure

to sign up before you leave. • Parent-Teacher conferences are September

30th- October 3rd (Minimum days). We will not have school on Friday, October 4th for the County Fair.

Volunteers

• Volunteers will start on Monday September 16th !

• Please sign up for one day a week. We need you from 8am-10am.

• I could also use help tearing out math pages from our workbooks. This can be done at home.

ABC Reader

• Simple Requirements: – Love to read to students – Enjoy classroom discussion – Attend a short book training for each book – Able to commit to reading 8 books (approximately

1 per month) during the school year to our class. *If interested please sign up in the back
