Internet and digital technologies are transforming the way we access information, learn, interact, network, socialise – presents opportunities and challenges.
Statistics
• 5 in 10 parents are unaware how much music and videos their children are downloading from the Internet.
• 73% of our children have had a negative online experience
• 33% of them were exposed to violent or nude images.
Role of parents
• Get your child to share with you their favourite online websites, things to do and what is cool.
• Spend time online together doing family activities.
• Talk to your child about their online experiences; discuss about the benefits and risks of the Internet.
Role of parents
• Remind them not to respond to anyone who says something inappropriate and they should immediately leave any site if they feel uncomfortable.
• Reassure them that it is OK to ask you questions or talk to you if they run into problems with someone online.
Dos:
• Seek permission before using computer
• Have a time limit for the use of computer
• Practice netiquette on the internet
• Respect intellectual property right
• Follow rules and terms of use of different websites
Don'ts:
• Access websites that have age restrictions
• Share password with others
