  • Anthem Teach me, O Lord William Byrd (1543-1623)Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes : and I shall keep it unto the end.Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law: yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart.Make me to go in the path of thy commandments : for therein is my desire.Incline my heart unto thy testimonies : and not to covetousness.O turn away mine eyes, lest they behold vanity : and quicken thou me in thy way.O stablish thy word in thy servant: that I may fear thee.

    Psalm 119:33-38

Anthem He delivered the poor C.H.H. Parry (1848-1918)He delivered the poor in his affliction, the fatherless and him that hath none to help him.He shall bind up the broken hearted, and proclaim liberty to the captives, and comfort to those who mourn. He shall give them beauty for ashes; the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth things that are sown to spring forth. So the Lord God will cause righteousness and peace to spring forth before all nations.

From: Hear my words, ye people

Anthem How can I keep from singing? TraditionalMy life flows on in endless song, above earth’s lamentation. I hear the real though far off hymn, that hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife I hear its music ringing. It sounds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? What though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth it liveth. And though the dark-ness round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that rock I’m clinging, since love is lord of heav’n and earth, how can I keep from singing? When tyrants tremble in their fear, and hear their death knell ringing; When friends rejoice both far and near, How can I keep from singing? In prison cell and dungeon vile our thoughts to thee are winging. When friends by shame are undefiled, how can I keep from singing?

Anthem The eyes of all wait upon thee William Harris (1883-1973)The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord: Jean Berger (1909-2002)and thou givest them their meat in due season.Thou openest thine hand: and fillest all things living with plenteousness. The Lord is righteous in all his ways: and holy in all his works. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him faithfully. He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry and will help them. The Lord preserveth all them that love him.

Anthem Meditabor in mandatus tuis G.P. da Palestrina (c. 1525-1694)Meditabor in mandatis tuis, quae dilexi valde: et levabo manus meas ad mandata tua, quae dilexi.I will meditate on thy commandments, which I have loved exceedingly:and I will lift up my hands to thy commandments, which I have loved.

Anthem Draw us in the Spirit’s tether Harold Friedell (1905-1958)Draw us in the Spirit’s tether; For when humbly, in thy name,Two or three are met together,Thou art in the midst of them:Alleluya! Touch we nowthy garment’s hem.As the brethren used to gatherIn the name of Christ to sup,Then with thanks to God the Father

Break the bread and bless the cup.Alleluya! So knit thouour friendship up.All our meals and all our livingMake as sacraments of thee,That by caring, helping, giving,We may true disciples be.Alleluya! We will servethee faithfully.

Anthem Ubi caritas Paul Mealor (b. 1975)Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor.Exultemus, et in ipso jucundemur.Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum.Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen.

Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together.Let us rejoice and be glad in it.Let us revere and love the living God.And from a sincere heart let us love one another. Amen.

Anthem Bless the Lord, O my soul Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935)Bless thou the Lord, O my soul.Blessed art Thou, O Lord.Bless the Lord and forget not all His benefits:And all that is within me bless His holy name.He is full of compassion and mercy,Long suffering and great in goodness. He will not always be chiding nor keepeth He,His wrath forever.Bless thou the Lord, O my soul.Blessed art Thou, O Lord.

LOOKING AHEADCompline Sundays, 9/10-11/26, 8 pm, Church

From the ancient monastic tradition of Compline, this final prayer of the day offers an opportunity for an intimate worship experience. This brief, peaceful liturgy is shaped by silence, candlelight, plainsong, and stunning choral music sung by the pro-fessional 8-voice Compline Choir. Lay-led Compline will continue for the Sundays in Advent (Dec. 3, 10, 17) in the chapel.

Patrick Ward for a new look at the twin John La Farge murals cleaned and restored this past summer. Freed from de-cades of accumulated grime, these works will be specially lit to show them in new and vivid detail. We’ll discuss La Farge’s technique as well as the scriptural scenes—Jesus with Nicodemus and Jesus with the Woman of Samaria—that frame the beginning of our main aisle. Learn how these two images “work” in the wider decorative and worship context of our space!

Save The Date: Outreach Volunteer OrientationFri., 9/29 or Sat., 11/18, 12 pm-3 pm, Forum

Are you a member of an outreach ministry? If so, save the date for Outreach Vol-unteer Orientation, led by Rebecca Jackson, Simone John, and Adina Davidson of the Trinity Boston Foundation. The orientation will be a 3-hour introduction to the concepts and values that underpin our outreach work, like building relationships across differences, understanding restorative practices, and more. The same content will be offered on both days, so it is only necessary to attend one orientation. More information will be provided at a later date. If you have questions in the meantime, direct them to Simone John, [email protected].

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVEWe invite you to share your God-given gifts with the parish, the city, and beyond, by participating in one of Trinity’s many ministries.

A New View: Trinity’s La Farge Murals Sun., 9/24, 10:15 am, ChurchJoin art conservator Corrine Long and the Rev.
