WELCOME TO TUCSON MEET YOURSELF — for 48 years, your celebration of beauty and resilience. It is no secret that the last eighteen months have been challenging for our families, businesses, schools, cities, counties, and country. But if there is one thing we have learned throughout the pandemic and social justice awakenings of this time, it is that culture and community endure. They are what help us heal and care for one another. Amid losses and frustrations, we found ways to honor beauty and tradition, practice mutual aid, and hold on to hope. These have always been the core values of TMY—and why this event has always been more than simply fun and diversion.

In 2020, we produced a hybrid socially distant and virtual festival. It was a fraction of the exuberant, inclusive, and expansive TMY we have come to know and love. Now, in 2021, we have worked closely with our County health officials to put together a safe, in-person, outdoor festival. We believe our Covid mitigation plan sets the gold standard for public gatherings. Now we are counting on you—our faithful and caring public—to do your part in helping us carry through this commitment.

So many cultural communities of this region and beyond tell us they feel “at home” at our beloved festival. We believe this kind of appreciation, celebration, and elbow-rubbing (or elbow wave from a distance) with others is the secret to a rich life and a

healthy community. Plus, there’s food! We hope you’ll learn something about someone from another culture while you’re here. This festival is a gift we give to us all as Tucsonans and dwellers of these magical borderlands. Mask up, keep your healthy distance, and enjoy every morsel.

Sincerely,

Maribel Alvarez, Ph.D.

Jim Griffith Chair in Public Folklore,University of Arizona, Southwest Center

Festival WelcomeFestival Welcome

LOSS & REMEMBRANCE SPACEThis special area of the festival offers a place to remember, share, and honor loss and grief. Find respite and support as you witness music and dances of grief and healing, add special names to the Wall of Loss, contribute to a community jukebox, sit with a death doula, or share stories about how you find solace. Sponsored by the Arizona End-of-Life Care Partnership.

MARIACHI POP-UP PERFORMANCE & filming of the Little Ugly Monkeys documentary

For over 50 years, Los Changuitos Feos (The Ugly Little Monkeys) have brought mariachi music to the region and expanded opportunities for young people. A new documentary on the original band members, 1964-69, will include a scene at this year’s festival. Come be an “extra” in this finale seen when you happen upon it.

THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF LOWRIDER CARS presented by The Dukes Car Club

The Dukes Car Club of Tucson presents ten lowrider cars plus demonstrations on how to trick out your own car. Learn how to mount and dismount old-style lock ring tires and apply pinstriping and murals to your ride.

CORRIDO CONTESTBack by popular demand, this contest celebrates the art of corridos, a musical genre and oral tradition from Mexico and highly popular along the US-Mexico border. Come listen to original corridos—running accounts of contemporary and historical events put to verse—and let your applause help choose the winners!

PIMA COUNTY MEET YOURSELF Friday, Saturday, & Sunday until 5 pm

Located this year in the courtyard inside the gates of the newly renovated Historic County Courthouse. Visit with staff from the Pima County Health Department, Flood Control, the Department of Transportation, and Kino Sports Complex. Pima Animal Care Center will be on site too doing pet adoptions so you can leave with your new best friend!

While at the Courthouse, visit the Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center and the January 8th Memorial, and the University of Arizona’s Alfie Norville Gem & Mineral Museum. Also visit the Children’s Library for kids’ arts and crafts inside the Joel D. Valadez Public Library. And the Pima County Health Department’s COVID19 Vaccination Clinic in the Library’s lower-level. Look for the registration tent outside the entrance in Jácome Plaza!
