Theoretical Physics
Student James: As part of my Ad Astra
bursary I applied to visit the
particle physics research
project at CERN in Geneva.
I spent two weeks there
during the summer after
first year and it was truly an
inspirational and
unforgettable experience.
Financial Mathematics
Financial Mathematics
• How to make financial decisions using
mathematics and statistics
• Deep knowledge of mathematics, statistics,
and computational techniques,
complemented by a background in economics
and finance
• Jobs as e.g. trader, insurance, actuary,
investment banker, data analyst, financial
analyst.
From Orientation to Graduation basic principles
Stage 1 (first year) is divided into 12 modules. You must fulfill
the requirements of at least two subjects (detail on next slides).
Stage 2. ALL subjects that you are qualified to take are
available to you. Study two, three or more of these.
Stage 3 and beyond focus on one subject – your degree
major. In 2013,14,15 & 16, over 98% of students got their first
choice of degree major (and all who completed 60 credits).
Only Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience fill up.
23 of the degree majors are 3 or 4 year BSc (Hons)
programmes. Science and Maths Education degrees are
5 years – BSc + MSc.
Choosing modules in Stage 1 (first year)
Take 12 modules. At least 10 must be from Science (Table 1
of the Stage 1 leaflet) + 2 electives (can also be in Science).
SCI10010 is compulsory. Lectures in first two weeks.
Small-group project with your academic tutor from week 3.
In Stage 1, each of the 27 degree subjects have
(i) Modules you may have to do – depending onLeaving
Cert/FETAC/Mature/A-level/International etc. (Table 3) (CC)
(ii) Modules you must do in Stage 1 (C)
(iii) Modules you must do in either Stage 1 or Stage 2. (PC)
• These are shown in the columns of Table 2 of the Stage 1
Leaflet…

Most modules will involve lectures, practicals and tutorials, with continuous assessment. Consult lecturer / apply for extenuating circumstances if you miss any
for valid, unforseen reasons. 2 week deadline.
Assessment complete by the end of the semester, including an end of semester exam in most cases. Exam period ends on Thursday December 22nd.
Module grades and Grade Points : A+(4.2), A(4.0),…,D-(2.0) Grade Point Average (GPA) – average over your modules.
Progression : can only carry 2 fails into Stage 2
Degree grade is based 70% on final year, 30% on penultimate year.
