WELCOME TO VICTORIA POINT STATE HIGH SCHOOL 2020 – Year 10

Year 10 is an extremely important year as it marks the transition of students into Senior Secondary and is the foundation for future study options and career pathways. It is important that all students maintain the highest standard of academic achievement possible, in order to ensure that the breadth of senior pathways offered at Victoria Point State High School is accessible to them.

Students in year 10 will be affected by a new Queensland Government initiative introducing new senior assessment and tertiary entrance arrangements, which commenced for students who entered Year 11 in 2019.

The major focus of Year 10 is preparing students to be able to successfully complete their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) in Years 11 and 12 and choose the tertiary studies or vocational pathway that supports their goals and aspirations. Students will begin foundational studies for senior subject offerings in semester 2 of Year 10 and are divided in to two pathways:

Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) + Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR): the pathway for students interested in pursuing University studies after completing Year 12.

Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE): the pathway for those students interested in pursuing TAFE, traineeships/apprenticeships, or direct entry into the workforce after completing Year 12.

Achievement in English and Mathematics is important as it determines the ability to select Senior courses of study. Further information regarding pathways and pre-requisites will be discussed with all Year 10 students at the beginning of 2020.

Year 10 students will also be able to participate in either work experience/school-based traineeships or apprenticeships, and will be given more information regarding these opportunities next year.

Prior to transitioning from Year 10 into Year 11, all students and their parents/caregivers will attend a Performance Progress Day at the school. Interviews will be held with students and their families on Wednesday 12 August 2020 and will confirm the individual student’s senior pathway and course selections. Academic achievement in Year 10 will be taken into consideration when making these course selections. Students intending to select a QCE + ATAR Pathway must be achieving a GPA 3.5 and a C level of Achievement in English.

The following information as well as financial obligations will help to plan and be prepared for the year ahead.

PAYMENT OPTION

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME: The Student Resource Scheme fee $300, plus any supplementary Subject or Sport levies, must either be paid in full or a payment plan be entered into with the school by Friday 21 February 2020.

In addition to the processes outlined above, students identified as at-risk of not meeting their attendance, punctuality and engagement obligations as a member of Senior Secondary will go through an individual management process.

Please find enclosed the following information to assist the beginning 2020:

COMMITMENT TO EXPECTATIONS – READ AND DISCUSS 1. I understand that there is a mandatory participation component for students engaged

in a senior pathway. I commit to actively participating in all of the classes in which I am enrolled and submit all assessment by the due date. I understand that failure to do this may affect my continued enrolment at Victoria Point State High School.

2. I understand that the school has a mandatory attendance rate of 92% for students engaged in a senior pathway. I commit to maintaining a level of attendance above this rate and understand that failure to do so may affect my access to extracurricular privileges and my continued enrolment at Victoria Point State High School.

3. I commit to maintaining the appropriate homework study load for a senior student as advised by my teachers.

4. I commit to meeting all assessment checkpoints, where appropriate, in order to maximise my opportunities for success.

5. I understand that should it be identified that I am at risk of not successfully completing the required coursework of a subject I have selected, the school will take appropriate action. This may include a compulsory transfer from the course, compulsory attendance to tutorials, etc.

6. Should I successfully obtain a school based traineeship/apprenticeship or enrol into a part-time TAFE course (QCE pathway students only), I commit to ensuring I proactively follow up regarding any school work missed due to this commitment. I understand that failure to do so may affect my continued participation in a school based traineeship/apprenticeship or TAFE course.

7. I understand that the ATAR preparation courses are a mandatory component of the QCE + ATAR pathway. I commit to actively participating in all elements of the preparation course. I understand that failure to do so may affect my continued enrolment in the QCS + ATAR pathway.

8. I understand that if I am unable to consistently uphold the commitments outlined above I may be required to attend an interview with the Deputy Principal and my parents to discuss my continued enrolment as a Senior Student at Victoria Point State High School.

VPSHS SPORT IN 2020 - INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

There are many opportunities for students to participate in sport at Victoria Point State High School in 2020. Information pertaining to each sport and sporting competitions is advertised regularly in Student Notices, on the Sports Noticeboard (outside Staffroom 1), in the school’s electronic newsletter, as well as on the School website and Facebook page.

Inter-house competitions and carnivals include the Swimming Carnival (Friday 7 February), Cross Country (Friday 3rd April) and Athletics Carnival (Friday 26 June). Every student is encouraged to participate, to the best of their ability, in these events for their House – Benfer, Heinemann, Master and Sands.

The inter-school squad is selected from these inter-house competitions with the exception of cross country and 12 years athletics. Students who qualify represent our school at the Bayside District Carnivals for Swimming (12-19 years old: Thursday 20 February), Cross Country (12-19 years old; Thursday 7 May) and Athletics (13-19 years old Thursday 30 & Friday 31 July, 12years: Wednesday 5 & Thursday 6 August). Selection into Bayside, Metropolitan East or State teams can occur for ongoing successful athletes.

Victoria Point State High School participates in the Bayside District Secondary Schools Sporting Competitions. The objective of this inter-school sporting competition is to foster sport amongst the affiliated state and independent schools in the Redlands and wider Bayside area. These competitions, conducted on each Tuesday afternoon (Years 7/8 and 9 teams) and Wednesday afternoon (Years 10 and 11/12 teams), commence at 12.55pm and end at approximately 2.45pm. Selection trials occur for all inter-school sports.

Victoria Point State High School sends inter-school teams to compete in the following sports: Term 1 and Term 2

Summer Season Boys – Volleyball, Touch Football, Baseball, Basketball (7/8 and 9 only) and Cricket (10-12 only) Summer Season Girls – Touch Football, Basketball, Baseball Year 7 Summer Gala days (Boys Volleyball, Boys/ Girls Touch Football, Combined Baseball, Boys/Girls Basketball)

Term 2 and Term 3 Winter Season Boys - Rugby League, AFL (7-10 only), Soccer, Basketball (10-12 only) Winter Season Girls - Netball, Soccer, Volleyball Year 7 Winter Gala days (Boys Rugby League, AFL, Boys/Girls Soccer, Girls Netball and Girls Volleyball)

Bayside District and Metropolitan Finals pathways are available for successful teams after the completion of the district competition. These teams initially compete for district premierships and when successful, move on to metropolitan finals.   The school is part of the Metropolitan East Region, which provides the major school sport representative pathway for students. This Association invites students to attend district trials or submit a paper nomination depending upon the sport. When information regarding Bayside district and Metropolitan East Region trial dates is communicated to the school, the trial dates and venues are advertised in the Student Notices as well as via the school’s Facebook page.

The emphasis for school-based sport is on promoting healthy and active lifestyles, skill development and student engagement to build spirit through participation. Students will have the opportunity to improve their skills and capabilities in court sports, field sports as well as cross country and track and field events.

To keep abreast of information regarding sport at VPSHS, students need to regularly check the Student Notices and Sports Noticeboard (outside Staffroom 1). Parents can also keep up to date via the school website as well as VPSHS Facebook and Twitter. For assistance or clarification don't hesitate to contact the Senior Secondary Sports Coordinator, Mr Tom Marshall by phone on 3820 5866 or email [email protected].

We look forward to seeing all students positively take part in the sporting program at Victoria Point State High School in 2020.

Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses

Information for Parents/CarersWhat is the Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses? The Code outlines expected standards of primary, middle and secondary school student behaviour while travelling on buses so that bus travel can be safe and enjoyable for everyone. The Code encourages all students to be safe and responsible passengers, provides clear processes for dealing with misconduct, outlines categories of inappropriate behaviour, consequences for students who misbehave and the rights and responsibilities of those involved in school bus transport.

How can I help my children to be safe and responsible bus travellers?Parents/carers need to ensure that their children have the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible bus travellers and are capable of travelling independently on the bus. You can support your children by talking about the Code to ensure that they are aware of their rights and responsibilities and the consequences of misconduct on the bus.

Who is involved in implementing the Code of Conduct?Ensuring the safe transport of each and every child is a shared responsibility which brings together the efforts of students, their parents/carers, schools, bus drivers and bus operators. If there are any bus conduct issues involving your child it is important that you cooperate with the bus operator and the school principal in discussing reported incidents of bus misconduct and in implementing agreed consequences. As a parent/carer you play a leading role in influencing and guiding your child’s behaviour. Therefore, your involvement in this process is essential to ensure a satisfactory resolution and to help your child understand the importance of safe and responsible bus behaviour.

What are my responsibilities under the Code of Conduct?Parents’ and carers’ rolesTo actively support bus safety with their school aged children.

Parents’ and carers’ rights• Safe and comfortable travel for their children.

• To be respected and treated fairly.

• To be consulted and to receive accurate information about the bus behaviour of their children.

Parents’ and carers’ responsibilities• To ensure that their children are capable of travelling

independently on the bus.

• To ensure their children have an understanding of the Code and the bus rules.

• To communicate respectfully with the operator, school and transport staff.

• To teach their children about bus safety and consequences for misconduct.

• To demonstrate appropriate bus travel behaviours to their children.

• To co-operate with the school and bus operator in managing bus misconduct.

• To ensure the safe travel of their children to and from the bus stop.

• To be available for discussions about the behaviour of their children.

Parents’ and carers’ expected behaviours• To provide their children with the correct bus fare.

• To cooperate with their children’s school and the bus operator in discussing behaviour incidents and in implementing any agreed disciplinary action.

• To communicate with the bus operator and the school about their children’s bus transport and respond to phone and written communication.

• To address concerns about their children’s bus travel by promptly contacting the bus operator so that relevant issues can be managed using the procedures outlined in the Code.

13 QGOV (13 74 68)

What if a student does not pay the bus fare?Unfortunately, the incidence of fare evasion by school students has increased in recent times. Some students have exploited the framework for safe travel of school students by not paying the correct fare, thinking that they will not be refused travel. As a parent/carer, you need to let your children know that they cannot expect to travel on the school bus unless they pay their fare and that there are consequences for fare evasion. Therefore, you must ensure that they have the required bus fare for their school bus travel.

What about bullying on the bus?Bullying is a complex societal issue which is not the responsibility of just one individual or group. Everyone, especially those who have responsibility for the care of children, need to cooperate in managing bullying.

Physical bullying which affects the safety of bus travel can be easily observed and is dealt with under the Code. However, other forms of bullying, while being totally unacceptable, can be very difficult to identify as threats to passenger safety. When the bus driver has concerns, either observed or reported, of bullying issues the bus operator will be advised and will then inform the school of the situation.

Useful information about strategies to identify and to deal with bullying is available for parents/carers at www.bullyingnoway.gov.au.

What can I do if I am dissatisfied with the bus service?

If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of the service provided by the bus company you should contact the bus operator to lodge a complaint and to attempt to resolve the issue. If you are not able to resolve the matter effectively with the operator you can consider referring the issue to the nearest Department of Transport and Main Roads Translink regional office (school transport) (for list of locations refer to www.translink.com.au/schooltransport) to investigate according to the Department’s complaints management process.

What can I do if I am dissatisfied with a decision made by the bus operator?

After implementing the processes outlined in the Code, an operator may decide to refuse a student travel on the bus or to implement alternative consequences. If you are dissatisfied with this outcome you may request that the operator review the decision.

If attempts to resolve your dissatisfaction with the operator’s decision are unsuccessful and you wish to take the matter further, more formal procedures are involved. In these circumstances you may contact the nearest Department of Transport and Main Roads Translink regional office (school transport) (for list of locations refer to www.translink.com.au/schooltransport) and request, in writing, a review of the decision.

What are the possible consequences for not following the Code*?

Category 4: The behaviour is immediately life threatening

• Refused bus travel for a defined period (school weeks) plus behaviour agreement (agreement period up to one school year) or

• Permanent refused travel.

Category 3: The behaviour is dangerous/destructive and highly likely to cause immediate harm to property and others

• Refused bus travel (maximum 10 school weeks) plus behaviour agreement (agreement period up to one school year).

Category 2: The behaviour is unsafe where there could be harm to property and others

• First Report – refused bus travel (maximum five school days).

• Repeat Report within 10 school weeks – refused bus travel (maximum 10 school days) and/or behaviour agreement (agreement period up to 10 school weeks).

Category 1: The behaviour is irresponsible but not likely to cause harm

• Report of single incident – written caution considered.

• Report of repeat of incidents in single journey – written caution and/or one to two days refused travel.

• First Repeat Report in 10 school weeks (repeat incidents across multiple journeys) – written caution and/or one to two days refused travel.

• Second Repeat Report in 10 school weeks – maximum five days refused travel and/or behaviour agreement for up to 10 school weeks.

• Third Repeat Report in 10 school weeks – maximum 10 days refused travel and/or behaviour agreement for up to 10 school weeks.

* In some circumstances an alternative consequence may be considered appropriate.

About the QCESenior schooling is an exciting time for Queensland students. They can choose what to study from a wide range of subjects and courses that count towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

The QCE is Queensland’s internationally recognised senior schooling qualification. Achieving one is a sign of academic and personal success.

The QCE is flexible and allows students to design the pathway that’s right for them

— whether that’s heading to university, skilled work, TAFE or other training. This approach supports engagement in learning and helps students to develop skills for success in the future.

To achieve a QCE, students must complete the set amount of learning, at the set standard, in the set pattern, and meet literacy and numeracy requirements.

Your child will be awarded a QCE when they meet all these requirements. This usually occurs at the end of Year 12. Students who haven’t achieved a QCE by then can continue to work towards one after they leave school.

Changes to senior schoolingIn response to national and international research and the advice of education experts, the Queensland Government has invested $70m in the new QCE system to prepare Queensland students for the challenges of tomorrow.

After more than three years of trials as well as training for nearly 17,000 teachers, Queensland schools are ready for a new era that started with Year 11 students in 2019.

• QCAA senior syllabuses have been reviewed and redeveloped. Some subjects were renamed, some combined and some new ones introduced. The new ones include Design, Food & Nutrition, Literature, and Psychology.

• Authority and Authority-registered subjects have been replaced by General and Applied subjects.

• Students will complete fewer formal assessments in the new system.

• There will be statewide external exams as well as internal (i.e. school-designed) assessments in General subjects.

• From 2020, Year 12 students will no longer sit the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test, which has been in place since 1992.

• New processes will strengthen the quality and comparability of internal assessment.

• From 2020, the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the Overall Position as the way to rank Queensland school leavers for tertiary entrance.

• The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) will calculate students’ ATARs based on their subject results.

Preparing students for a changing world New senior syllabuses give students the opportunity to develop the skills they need for success in work and life in the 21st century:• critical thinking• creative thinking• communication• collaboration and teamwork• personal and social skills• ICT skills.

Subjects and coursesStudents in the new QCE system can still choose what to study from a wide range of subjects and courses:

• QCAA subjects (General subjects, Applied subjects and Short Courses)

• Vocational education and training (VET) courses offered by schools and external providers

• School-based apprenticeships and traineeships• Other courses, e.g. university subjects completed while

at school and/or certificates and awards such as those issued by the Australian Music Examinations Board or Duke of Edinburgh programs.

Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) subjectsGeneral subjects prepare students for tertiary study, further education, training and work. General subjects may contribute up to four credits per subject towards a QCE. They may also contribute to your child’s ATAR. Examples include English, General Mathematics, Ancient History, Biology, and Music Extension.

Applied subjects focus on practical skills and prepare students for further education, training and work. They may contribute up to four credits per subject towards a QCE. One Applied subject may also contribute to your child’s ATAR when combined with four General subjects. Examples include Essential English, Essential Mathematics, Business Studies, Industrial Technology Skills, and Tourism.

Short Courses provide a foundation for further learning in a range of areas. Short Courses may contribute one credit per course towards a QCE. They do not contribute to the ATAR. Examples include Short Course in Literacy, Short Course in Numeracy and Short Course in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Languages.

You can find the list of 97 senior subjects on the QCAA website.

QCE pathway planningIn Year 10, schools work with students and their parents to develop a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan or similar.

Your child’s SET Plan will help them:• structure their learning in Years 11 and 12 around

their abilities, interests and ambitions• decide which subjects and courses they should

choose to achieve their learning, further education and training, and career goals.

In Year 10 students complete the final year of the Prep–Year 10 Australian Curriculum, which provides the foundation knowledge and skills required for senior schooling.

AssessmentHow students are assessed in Years 11 and 12 in the new QCE system depends on what they are studying.

General subjectsIn General subjects, students’ final results are based on their achievement in three internal assessments (set and marked by schools) and one external assessment (set and marked by the QCAA).

In most subjects, internal assessment contributes 75% and external assessment 25% towards a student’s final result. In Mathematics and Science subjects, internal assessment and external assessment each contribute 50%.

Internal assessment results are not scaled by external assessment results when calculating students’ final subject results.

Final results in General subjects are reported to students as a mark out of 100 and a grade of A–E.

Applied subjectsIn Applied subjects, students’ final results are based on four internal assessments (set and marked by schools).

In Essential English and Essential Mathematics, one of these internal assessments is a common internal assessment (developed by the QCAA and marked by your child’s school).

There is no external assessment in Applied subjects.

Final results in Applied subjects are reported to students as a grade of A–E.

External assessmentStarting in 2020, students taking General subjects will sit external assessments (set and marked by the QCAA) in Term 4 each year.

Students in each subject will sit these pen and paper exams at the same time in schools across Queensland. Most students will sit the exams when they are in Year 12.

Practice papers will be available in Term 3, 2019 to help teachers prepare students for external assessment.

The 2020 external assessment timetable will be published on the QCAA website in Term 4, 2019.

Access arrangements and reasonable adjustmentsAccess arrangements and reasonable adjustments (AARA) — formerly known as special provisions — are for students who may have disability, impairment and/or medical conditions, or experience other circumstances that may be a barrier to their performance in assessment. If you think your child may need AARA to complete assessments, please talk to their school.

For all Queensland schools

Vocational education and training (VET)VET remains an important part of senior schooling and will continue in its current form. It’s an area in which Queensland leads the country. About 60% of Queensland senior students study for VET qualifications that count towards their QCE. In recent years the most popular courses have been in business, ICT, hospitality, construction, fitness, and sport and recreation.

How students are assessed in VET depends on the course. Typical ways include:• observation• written assessment• questioning• work samples• third-party feedback.

Results and reportingA student’s final subject results and QCE will be released in their learning account on the myQCE website in December — at the end of Year 12.

Learning accounts for students in the new QCE system will be available later in 2019.

Tertiary entranceThe Overall Position (OP) has been the main tertiary entrance rank for Queensland school leavers since the early 1990s. It will be used for the last time with Year 12 students in 2019.

The ATAR will be the tool used to select school leavers for tertiary entrance from 2020.

The OP and ATAR are both equally fair and reliable methods for ranking students who have studied different combinations of subjects. But because the ATAR is a finer-grained rank it gives universities greater scope for making decisions about student entry to high-demand courses.

Queensland ATARs will be based on a student’s: • best five General subject results, or • best results in four General subjects, plus one Applied

subject, or • best results in four General subjects, plus one

VET qualification at Certificate III or above.

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) will calculate and issue students’ ATARs. You will find more information on its website: www.qtac.edu.au.

Post-school pathwaysThe Queensland Government’s Next Step survey tells us that over 85% of Year 12 graduates in 2018 were engaged in education, training or employment six months after completing school.• Around 58% had started some form of further

education or training

– 39% were enrolled in an undergraduate degree

– 19% had started a VET qualification, including a traineeship or apprenticeship.

• About 28% were employed.• Approximately 11% were seeking work.• About 3% were not in the labour force, education

or training.
