Q&A with WOLFFWOLFF answers questions about his life, experiences, and good memories

Which words describe your personality? Thoughtful, creative, spontaneous, intellectual, caring, empa-thetic.

Describe your strong sides: I analyze situations and problems quickly to determine the most amicable solution in both daily life and at work. I empa-thize often to seek clarity of situations from all perspectives. I am very caring of others. I am an extreme extrovert and love to be around other people. I live in the present and try not to dwell on the past or worry too much about the future.

Describe your weak sides: I have a tendency to be easily distracted. Mostly I can delegate mundane tasks to others, but I often like to do things myself to ensure they are done to my satisfaction. This often consumes much of my time. It is very difficult for me to remember names of people I just meet. I am terrible at remembering dates, but I use acronyms or math problems to remember them.

What is your marital status?Married

Do you have any children? Yes, I have four children. My 14 year old is currently 5’ 8”, weighs 187 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is a strong-willed individual. He is very caring; the type that cannot pass someone begging for money on the street without giving them something to eat or drink. He loves fishing and hunting. He enjoys anything outdoors as I do. He is my fishing part-ner and we spend a lot of time together. He has always been in the upper 90% on growth charts and continues to grow. He will be taller than me. He has no medical concerns and is completely healthy. My second son, 9 years old, is the athlete. He is 4’ 5” and weighs 72 pounds. He is very skinny and is full of energy. He has blonde hair and brown eyes. He also enjoys sports and has played baseball and soccer. He too is very healthy with no medical concerns. Third is my princess, my 8 year old daughter. She was born with curly brown hair and brown eyes. She also enjoys playing outside and loves to be around friends. She is extremely intelligent for her age and tends to help her older brother with his homework. She is very compassionate, helpful and honest. She is currently 4’ 6” and weighs in at a slender built 69 pounds. She had RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) when she was 2 weeks old, but has been in perfect health ever since with no other medical conditions. My last son is 2 years old. He is a character. He is very charismatic, energetic and will steal your heart at first glance. Terms of growth and development, he already knows his alphabet, colors, numbers, and is very coherent in speech. He is currently 35” tall and weighs 21 pounds. He too is in perfect health with no medical concerns.

Which countries have you visited:Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Iraq, Ireland, Kuwait, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States.

Describe the best holiday you have had: One Christmas growing up, I wanted a video game. I recall being very excited Christmas morning to open my presents to see if Santa had brought the game. I was disappointed when I finished opening all my gifts and the one game I wanted was not there. As I gathered my new toys up to take to my room, I heard my dad say that there was another present that was stuck in the chimney. I ran downstairs and found my father holding the game in his hand.

What do you like the most about your own country:I enjoy the diversity and of course, our personal freedoms. I appreciate them more since I have visited other countries that do not enjoy our personal liberties. I love the countryside and the oceans. I love going to beaches, anywhere there is saltwa-ter. Being on the ocean in a boat is extremely relaxing to me and has been my ambition since I was very young.

Who are your idols/heroes/heroines? My personal idol is my father. He served four tours in a war that many in the nation didn’t agree with. He worked hard to provide for his family, doing anything necessary to keep us fed and housed. He continues his service to this day, refusing to retire because he feels obligated to provide service to the nation as long as he is capable.

What are your goals in life? I still want to be able to live a life on the ocean at some point. However, much like my father, I feel obligated to provide ser-vice to my country for as long as I am capable. Ultimately, I intend on retiring with enough financial security to put my children through college and live on a beach and have a boat.

What were your childhood dreams:I always wanted to own a boat so that I could go offshore fish-ing any time I wanted, to be able to pursue whatever species of fish I wanted. For a while, my father owned an offshore fish-ing vessel and would take me out whenever the weather was agreeable. I learned to walk while on a boat, over 100 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. I learned to make my own lures and tie my own rigs at a very young age. I dreamt of being able to fish in bill fish tournaments and live a life on the ocean.

Which values do you rank the highest?Loyalty, honesty, commitment.

Which childhood experience made the biggest impres-sion on you? My father would take me hunting after I was 5 years old. Be-ing alone with him, in the quiet woods, observing nature had a huge impact on me. I learned that the world is bigger than just us. Being responsible with a weapon, not only for yourself but for others, seeing and knowing the impact of not being responsible taught me a lot. It taught me that someone’s ac-tions, whether intentional or not, can have devastating effects on others. Before my father ever let me hold or fire a rifle, he made me read and memorize the “Ten Commandments of Marksmanship”. This taught me at an early age that you mustwork for what you want to achieve. It was difficult for me to memorize all ten, especially being 5 years old. But I did it be-cause I really wanted to be able to go hunting with my father. There were so many lessons learned in the woods that are applicable to all walks of life.

Which was your greatest experience or moment? Having each of my four children and holding them for the firsttime. They way they look at you, the fragility, complete de-pendance upon you for love, life and happiness.

Happiest: Watching my first son catch his first fish. He caught a rainbow trout out of a pond in Alaska. He was 2 years old. He was so excited and I was so happy!

Funniest: I owned a sit-on kayak while stationed in the Pacific Northwest. I would frequently kayak out into Puget Sound to go fishing or sightseeing. One of my friends was interested in buying a sit-on kayak, but he rented a sit-in kayak. We launched out into Puget Sound and watched seals, saw star-fish and huge jellyfish. He asked if he could try my kayak and of course I obliged. We swapped kayaks, and I was overly confident in my ability, though I had never been in a sit-in kay-ak before. As we were paddling the 2 miles back to our trucks, I saw the largest purple starfish I had ever seen at the bottom of the Sound in over 60 foot of water. I dropped my paddle into the water to stop my movement, grabbed my underwater camera to take a pic, and the kayak had drifted me cross-wise against the waves and wind. As I stuck my arm in the water to take a picture, I realized that the sit-in kayak was not as stable as my sit-on, and rolled completely over in 50 degree water. I lost my camera, was freezing, and my pants had filled with water. I tried several times to right the kayak, but couldn’t and I knew that hypothermia and exhaustion would set in quickly. So I swam the overturned kayak to a rocky shore, threw it up on the bank and climbed myself to safety. I stripped down to my underwear, dumped all the water from the kayak, and pad-dled my way back the two miles to the truck. It wasn’t the first or last time I had spent in extremely cold water.

Scariest: Recently I took my boat out 28 miles offshore. I hadn’t known that the mechanic that recently worked on my livewell pump didn’t tighten it properly in place. As we trolled around the ocean for 6 hours, I was slowly filling my hull with water. We hooked a big fish and I slowed down the boat. As we slowed, waves rolled over the transom and also popped off a porthole that enabled water to go straight into the hull from the top. The back of the boat with my son and my neighbor was quickly taking on water as the bow raised to 30 degrees. Somehow I had the knowledge to control the boat, shift weight around, not panic, and begin to drive the boat towards other boats on a nearby reef. We were able to safely drive back to port with another vessel following us. I didn’t realize the extent of the danger until we got to the dock and I realized what all had happened, and that my hull was completely filled with water.

Proudest: I took my son fly fishing because he always wanted to try it out. I explained not to be concerned as it often takes years of experience and practice to learn how to cast properly and to actually catch a fish on a fly. I myself had toyed with fly fishing for over a decade and had caught only two fish. He caught four trout that day and had picked up fly casting on his first day out. I was extremely proud of him.

Most dangerous: There are many dangerous situations I’ve been in while in the military deployed to Iraq that I probably shouldn’t have survived. But thanks to the caring of others, training, and quick reaction, I am still here today.

Greatest sorrow: A week before Easter seven years ago, my niece passed away at the age of 16. It was a freak occurrence and a series of unfortunate events that caused her death. To see such a young life with so much potential taken too early is devastating.

What is your favorite color? Blue, it reminds me of the tranquillity of the ocean.

What is your favorite animal? Koala bear, they are finicky little animals, but I’ve always want-ed to hold one.

What is your favorite kind of food? Steak, I’m definitely a meat eater. I love the juiciness and fla-vor of a rare steak.

What is your favorite kind of music? Classic rock, I believe the message of the people at that time was powerful as it showed unity of the people towards a com-mon goal.

What is your favorite kind of car? Chevrolet trucks, for whatever reason, I prefer Chevy over Ford, for no other reason than I owned one Ford and it died on me while driving on the interstate.

What is your favorite kind of pet? Dogs, I love their obedience, loyalty, playfulness and caring.

What is your favorite time of year? Spring, it is the season for love! It’s the transition from cold winters back into the livelihood of summer.

What is your favorite book and/or author?“Moby Dick,” I enjoy the passion and the tale.

What is your favorite movie and/or director? The American film director Stanley Kubrick. He has an ex-tremely vivid imagination and a knack for storytelling in all of his movies.
