Assignment #1*: Brave New World

Read the entire text of Brave New World and do the following: Choose and reflect upon 4 of the questions that you find the most intriguing. 1. Bernard Marx appears to be the protagonist (main

character) of the novel; discuss his presence as a character (who, what, and why?) and then ex-plain his use as a necessary device in order for the dystopian confrontation to take place. IN OTHER WORDS: Why does the story NOT WORK without Bernard? 2.Explain the World State’s motto which appears on the outside of the hatcheries building (Com-munity, Identity, Stability). IN OTHER WORDS: What does this phrase say about what type of a world this is? 3.What is soma? What does it coincide with in the 21st century? Why is it a dangerous option for characters like John Savage? IN OTHER WORDS: What exists in our modern world that

does the same thing that soma does? How could soma be harmful to John Savage and to others in our day and age?

4. Explain the irony of Linda and her name in Brave New World’s World State. IN OTHER WORDS: Why does Linda’s name in the story not match who she really is? Why is it off? What is the author’s point or purpose in doing this? What does he want to show the reader? 5. What has Mustapha Mond given up to be World Controller? Do you think she thinks it was worth it? 6. Bernard Marx, Hemholtz Watson, and John Savage all embrace differing fates at the end of the dystopia. Contrast their reactions to Mustapha Mond’s punishments for each. IN OTHER WORDS: Different things happen to the 3 characters. Talk about the differences between how each character handles Mustapha Mond’s punishments.

WRITE: a response of AT LEAST 1 double spaced page for each question that you chose from above. Your work must be in size 12, Times New Roman. Email your responses to [email protected] or drop them off at the front office by 10:00 AM on June 30th.

Plagiarism Awareness & Acknowledgement Contract Using someone else's ideas or phrasing and representing those ideas or phrasing as our own, either on purpose or through carelessness, is a serious offense known as plagiarism. Plagiarism is literary theft.

"Ideas or phrasing" includes written or spoken material, from whole papers and paragraphs to sentences, or even phrases, but it also includes statistics, lab results, art work, etc. "Someone else" can mean a professional source, such as a published writer or critic in a book, magazine, encyclopedia, or journal; an electronic resource such as material we discover on the World Wide Web; another student at our school or anywhere else; a paper-writing "service" (online or otherwise) which offers to sell written papers for a fee; a tutor; parent, sibling or other family member. Any time you use someone else's work, you must explicitly give him or her credit using standard methods of attribution, either in the body of your work or as a citation which refers to a Works Cited page or bibliography. At Hampton Preparatory, students are expected to express their ideas in their own words, using the composition skills they have been taught over the years. Students are also, however, encouraged to research the words and ideas of others. If students choose to use those words or ideas in their own writings, they are expected to give credit (in the form of parenthetical documentation and/or bibliographic citation) and thereby avoid the act of plagiarizing. The temptation to plagiarize can be significant, especially with increased access to technological advances such as the internet and other computer-accessed sources of information. The consequences for plagiarizing, however, are not worth the risk.

At Hampton Preparatory, a student caught plagiarizing or cheating in some other way will participate in a parent/administrator conference. In addition, the plagiarized work or test on which the student cheated will be assigned a grade of zero.

Do not: • Submit anything orally or in writing as representing your own words or ideas, when, in fact, it does not • Participate in the plagiarizing acts of others • Lend your work to, or borrow work from, another student

Remember to: • Provide formal credit for words or ideas taken from outside sources, or any source that is not you • Provide formal credit for individuals who contribute to your work • Use quotation marks when using another’s exact words • Always question yourself as to your literary ethics, and ask your teacher if you are in doubt as to the validity of your work. • Be proud of the work you have accomplished and the knowledge you have gained, particularly that you have done it on your own

Whether or not a student intends to plagiarize does not affect the outcome; plagiarism is plagiarism.

Students are responsible to give appropriate credit to ideas that belong to others.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have read the above information, understand the ethical concepts of plagiarism, and agree to abide by the standards set forth by Hampton Preparatory. I understand that if I do plagiarize I will be subject to disciplinary procedures.
