Asheboro, voted a 2016 All-America City, is best known as the home of the North Carolina Zoo, the world’s largest wildlife park; but, it is also becoming well known for its downtown dining, shopping, and artistic offerings with its main street, Sunset Avenue, named a Great Main Street in North Carolina in 2015. Foodies of all sorts will enjoy many of Downtown Asheboro’s locally-owned restaurants. From delicious Southern food, including one of America’s top-rated fried chicken restaurants, Magnolia 23; to European-style café, The Table Farmhouse Bakery, where you can sit outside on a sunny day under an umbrella enjoying delicious, farm-to-table food. Big and small kids alike will enjoy Mike’s Chicago Dog and More; and Central Bakery, a local institution for more than 70 years, is great for those with a sweet tooth. Other popular places include Positano Italian Restaurant, The Flying Pig Food & Spirits, Times Square Pizzeria, Taco Loco, our newest restaurant for fast & fresh authentic Mexican cuisine, and Hop’s Barbecue, serving locals for more than 60 years; or, you can pick up fresh, locally-grown produce and other goodies at the Farmers Market. For craft beer lovers, Four Saints Brewing Company has great, locally brewed beer, or you can gather with your friends at Lumina Wine & Beer or Bottle & Can! Arts and culture have come alive in Downtown Asheboro with events such as the Summer Concert Series in Bicentennial Park on the first and third Sundays each May through September; Pigs & Pedals, an antique car show and barbeque competition held annually the first weekend in August; and, the Asheboro Fall Festival, held the first weekend in October every year since 1972. The Historic Sunset Theatre is home to the Friends of the Library Sunset Signature Series, featuring authors, lecturers, and entertainment events throughout the year; RhinoLeap Productions, a regional professional theatre company; and local theatre productions by RSVP and Randolph Youth Theatre Company. Unique shops include Randolph Arts Guild Gift Shop, Brightside Gallery, and an entire row of thrift and antique shops like Collector’s Antique Mall, featuring more than 30,000 square feet of antiques and collectibles, all situated within a few short blocks of Bicentennial Park, a beautiful green space park located in the very center of downtown where you can enjoy a variety of events, or just let the kids run and play. At the North Carolina Zoo, located just six miles southeast of Downtown Asheboro, they celebrate nature! Being the world’s largest natural habitat wildlife park means the animals have plenty of room to roam. Guests can enjoy authentic experiences with African animals like elephants, ostriches, and rhinos, or climb aboard a Zoofari bus for an exclusive tour inside this 40-acre Grasslands habitat. Create lasting memories by getting eye-to-eye with graceful giraffes at the Acacia Station Giraffe Deck and discover other wildlife such as polar bears, cougars, chimps, and gorillas. Families can also enjoy hiking trails and an adventurous Air Hike ropes course. Welcome to Downtown Asheboro, conveniently located in the Heart of North Carolina!
