TOTEM CUPSROB SOUTHCOTT

A totem is an object, usually an animal, which serves as an emblem for a family or clan and embodies a sacred relationship between nature and humanity. Totem poles are monumental sculptures of the Indian tribes of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Presenting a modern interpretation of an early Native American tradition, this attractive series of stacking cups observes the First Nation's custom of totem pole carving.

ABOUT THE WINDOW DISPLAYDANIEL LARRAIN AND SILVANA IRIONDO

e assignment was to design a window display with “Canadiana” as the theme. While looking for images for inspiration, we stumbled upon a book of Northwest Coast Indian designs, which contained hundreds of images that we thought could be incorporated into the display. We decided to draw these designs on big banners that would hang behind each window, in order to break the usual transparency of the store and draw attention to the window itself. We were aware of the fact that transparency has been a central characteristic to the store, so we had to figure out a way to transfer this quality to the banners. As a result, we decided to draw the patterns by cutting them out, thus taking visual weight off the banners and allowing for transparency and for the filtered entrance of sunlight.

When cutting out the Northwest Coast patterns on the banners, they had to be slightly modified, joining the white (negative) parts of the drawings with lines that would hold the paper together (as when making molds for stencils). Each modified pattern was drawn three times and cut-out using exacto knives.

e window also incorporated the use of vinyl, which consists of another pattern of Northwestern tribes, more specifically, the Tlingit tribe, to which the patterns on the banners correspond as well. As a finishing touch, the display cubes were painted red, making reference to the Canadian flag, and white feathers were hung in front of the banners and across the window, symbolizing nature, First Nations imagery and snow.
