In many ways the book of JAMES is like a blueprint for Christian
living. It’s a very helpful book, filled with practical advice on how to
maximize the Christian life. Today we will look at James 1:17-20 as
the Lord’s brother talks about looking and listening to the Lord. Watch
out …he even talks about ANGER in this passage!
This evening I will tackle a topic I have never preached on during my
40+ years of ministry. In fact, I asked several of my preaching buddies
and none of them have ever spoken on the subject of FASTING. In
some ways that is shocking because the Bible has a lot to say about
FASTING, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament with 40 references to the
subject.
Fasting is simply giving up for a period of time something significant in one’s life (food,
liquids, a particular food group, etc.) in order to spend more time in fellowship with God
through prayer, worship, study and meditation.
Why have we skipped this subject? I believe there are several reasons. First, none of us
like to be told what we can eat and not eat. We end up associating the concept of
FASTING with DIETING and that’s a sore subject for many of us.
Second, we don’t understand the REAL reason for fasting. Tonight, one of my goals is to
help all of us understand why followers of God would begin a fast.
Next, we probably don’t realize the many different avenues of fasting. There’s short term,
long term, no food & liquid for a brief time, no food but plenty of liquids for a longer time,
absence of a particular food or food group, absence of something significant to the
individual, and many more.
Finally, we don’t see the spiritual benefits of fasting. After tonight I hope we all know what
fasting can do for the believer.
While I have never spoken on the subject of fasting, I have often fasted for brief times. For
example, I often skip lunch once per week and spend that time in study or prayer.
Please let me add… there is a group of people who should NEVER consider
fasting. These are people who have a medical condition that would be impacted by a fast.
Are you a member of an adult Bible class? If not, please be my guest for the class, HARD
SAYING & DIFFICULT TEXTS OF THE BIBLE EXPLAINED. Upcoming classes will
include the purpose of angels and are there guardian angels today …why are there so
many translations today? … what happens to the soul at the point of death? …why is Mark
16:9-20 bracketed in some translations? … what is the Christian viewpoint regarding
suicide victims? …and many more. We meet every Sunday morning in classroom #118.
Hope to see you soon!

WOW, what a week!!!
We often say “Wow” about an event in our lives
that has been outstanding. Sometimes we say
“Wow” when an event comes to pass for which
we have been working so hard. And then… there
is a “Wow” of devastation. As you and I opened
up our news media on Tuesday morning, we
were held captive with the stories and photos of Nashville,
Tennessee and those surrounding areas. Please continue to
pray for our brothers and sisters and countrymen who were
affected by the tornado on Monday evening.
Pray for those families who have lost loved ones. I
cannot understand how much pain and devastation that can
occur in mere moments. No one is immune from this type of
pain. We have all felt the hurt of loss in our families. In
Galatians 6:1, we are reminded to bear each other’s burdens
to fulfill the Law of Christ. This is the time for the Lord’s church
to shine as a beacon for the lost and hurting.
Pray for those families who have lost their homes and
goods. Many have lost everything. Perhaps they are confused
and unsure of which direction to turn. While we know that
man’s life does not consist of the things he possesses (Luke
12:15), mankind DOES need food, clothing, shelter and water
in order to survive. This is a perfect time for the Lord’s church
to see to the needs of those families and reach out unto them.
Pray for those local congregations in the areas of
Nashville, Tennessee. A couple of congregations in that area
have lost families and very young children to death. I know this
will be devastating to these congregations and we need to
pray for our hurting brothers and sisters. Now is the time for
the Lord’s church to hold to each other and to God’s Holy
Word and remember that this world is not our home (Hebrews
11:13-16).
In Luke 22:32 Jesus told Peter that He was praying for
Peter. In order to be Christians, followers of Christ, we must be
a prayerful people. May God bless us as we follow in the steps
of our Lord.

We would like to thank everyone for the prayers & words of encouragement
for our family these past few months, as well as the gifts for the twins.
This year has been hectic & exhausting to say the least, but we feel truly
blessed to be apart of such a wonderful & loving church family. Jett & Jaxx
are both home & doing great. Jaxx has a clean bill of health & the previous
health issues are no longer a concern. Jet is now 10 lbs. 12 oz. & Jaxx is 7
lbs. 5 ox. We pray that we will be able to bring them soon & introduce them
to their church family.
Love, The Bernard Family (Mark, Heidi, Gaige, Grant, Jett & Jaxx)
