8th grade social studies is a continuation of US history. We cover 1876 through the modern times. At this time, there is not a NYS test in 8th grade Social Studies.
Throughout the year student work, unit exams and essays will be modeled to prepare students for high school
Social Studies
In physical science, students learn about phases of matter, atoms, chemical reactions, motion, forces, work and machines, energy sound, light and weathering and erosion
There are many opportunities for hands on and experiments to make science fun!
Reg. 8th grade classes take the state assessment
There is a Performance Component in May
Written Portion in June 6th
Physical Science
In earth science, students learn about weather, plate tectonics, geologic time, weathering and erosion, density, maps, astronomy, and climate
There will be many opportunities for hands on and activities to make science fun!
Students are expected to take the earth science regents at the end of the year
Earth Science lab reports stay in the classroom and are collected at the end of the year. STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE MOST LABS IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR REGENTS EXAM, end of June.
Earth Science
There will be 6 assessments administered throughout the year that are aligned with the state standards.
Successful completion of the Foreign Language class and the proficiency exam at the end of the year will earn each student High School credit.
Foreign Language
This year in 8th grade Math, the students will learn the Common Core Curriculum Standards.
The Accelerated students, will be responsible for the Common Core Curriculum for Algebra.
Students are expected to:Be fluent in their computationsUnderstand mathematical concepts
(the how and why), not just the process (how to get the answer)
Apply their knowledge to real world situations which increases rigor
Math
Scientific Calculators will be used in class. A scientific calculator MUST be bought and kept at home until the NYS test, then brought in to be used on the test.
NYS State Assessment will be April 13 - 15 NYS standardized testing will be given 3
times this year, to assess the progress of each student during the year.
Pioneer Benchmarks will be given at the end of each 10 week marking period, to assess the student learning. This will spiral the curriculum and each time be a little longer then the one before.
Accelerated students will take a the NEW Regents Exam on June 16th . They will practice using Graphing Calculators in class that will be used on the Regents.
Math - Testing****
Students may be placed in Academic Intervention Services this year because of last year’s test scores, last year’s grades and/or teacher recommendations. This is required by NYS state and will focus on skills based activities in a smaller group setting.
Math and ELA AIS
1. Identifies why students are struggling.A computer based program, i-Ready adapts to each student, providing easier or harder questions depending on students’ answers to previous questions. This is especially beneficial for identifying gaps spanning back multiple years, and identifying strengths and weaknesses. i-Ready assesses student performance across the standards in reading and mathematics and individualized next steps for instruction.
2. Measures growth across a student’s career.i-Ready provides a valid and reliable growth measure from year to year.
3. Supports data-driven differentiated instruction.Based on results, i-Ready automatically provides individualized online and teacher-led instruction targeted to each student’s unique needs.
iReady for Math and ELA
State Assessment will be April 5 - 7, 2016
All ELA Classes will continue with Reader and Writer’s Workshop, in addition to Module Implementation, and NYS CCLS
Every student will be expected to Read, Record, and Reflect, at home, EVERY DAY!

Reading fluency and comprehension has become evident in all subject areas
When a student reads a text - regardless of the content area - they can annotate, or mark up the text to reflect their thinking.
The following slide displays the strategies that will be used on a consistent basis in all subject areas.
