Foreword - Welding and Joining 2005 The Israeli National Welding Committee associated with the Israeli Materialsand Processes Society and the Society of Mechanical Engineers (The Associationof Engineers and Architects in Israel), undertook to organize the secondInternational Conference: “Welding and Joining 2005: Frontiers of MaterialsJoining”, in Israel, with the support of the Standards Institute of Israel. Welding scientists and engineers are involved in R&D, production, construction,and inspection functions associated with many aspects of manufacturing. Theincreasing world-wide awareness of environmental and resource-conservationconsiderations paves the way for many new opportunities related to weldingresearch and development. Welding science and engineering is a growingdiscipline that presents numerous challenges to new generations of engineers. More than 50 percent of the gross national product of Israel is associatedwith manufacturing that involves in one way or another joined products. Suchproducts are omnipresent and found in the construction, electronics, powergeneration, petrochemical, transportation, aerospace, robotics and nationaldefense industries. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we invite you toattend the international conference “Welding and Joining-2005: Frontiers ofMaterials Joining”, to be held on January 25-28, 2005 in Tel-Aviv. On the dawn of the 21st century, Israel has achieved a high level of technologythat allowed developing a magnesium extraction industry from the Dead Sea,a successful aircraft industry and the building and orbiting of its own satellite.A significant part of the R&D involved in these accomplishments includes astrong capability and expertise in welding and joining. Many of thesedevelopments can be attributed to the strong collaboration with researchersfrom other countries. The Annual Israeli Welding Conference has provided asuccessful forum in the framework of which Israeli researchers and engineershave interacted with their colleagues from abroad, both in order to share theirsuccesses and to learn about progress made elsewhere. Based on the success of the 2000 meeting it was decided to organize the"Welding and Joining 2005 - Frontiers of Materials Joining" InternationalConference. This conference intends to strengthen international collaborationin the field of Welding and Bonding engineering and science. You are invitedto participate, share your recent progress with us, and learn about new weldingand joining techniques.
