1 READ THIS FIRST

1.1 Safety copying

The program is intended for registration of welding data and willsuccessively build up a register of great value.

Therefore, make it a habit to copy the WELDDATA database every daywhen the welding job is finished, or to transfer the database to a networkwith back--up facilities. It is not advisable to connect logging to a networkdue to the risk of interference.

Note:If the WELDDATA database has to be reinstalled, first make a copy of it(see page 13).When using the deinstallation icon the SPS 4000 system is beinginfluenced, too. Therefore, make a copy of SPS 4000 before starting thereinstallation.

1.2 Important matters to be considered before bringingWMS 4000 into use

In the fields Workpiece andWeld (see page 36) each weld job is defined byway of a unique denomination. This denomination can then be used whensearching for weld data documentation.

Therefore, try and find a suitable structure for the denominations referring toother types of documentation of products and WPS documents used in thecompany.

Complete search data for a weld shall contain Year--Month--Day, WorkpieceandWeld number.

Example of how to mark an executed weld joint:981201, Workpiece, Weld number.

N.B.The computer shall not be used for other applications whilemeasuring data logging is being prepared or going on.

2 GETTING STARTED

2.1 Proceed as follows:

S Install the equipment for signal transfer between the power source andthe PC according to instructions and figure in the section INSTALLATIONon pages 10 -- 12.

S Make sure no other programs are active in the computer(energy saver, MS Office, etc.)

S Install the Weldoct WMS 4000 software in the computer (see page10 -- 12).

S Identify the serial contact connected to the PC. On delivery the dataprogram is prepared for COM1.If another COM number is to be used, the port must be indicated (seepage 11).

S Start the welding power source.

S Open the data program using the icon in the WMS 4000 program group.

S When the program is started for the first time after the installation, thefields for language selection and company name are shown. The entriesmade here are valid until they are changed.

S The system is now ready for welding, though without workpieceidentification and limit values. See instructions in the sectionOPERATION on page 13 and TASKS on page 37.

S Problems and trouble shooting are dealt with in the section TROUBLESHOOTING AND ERROR MESSAGES on page 39.

3 INTRODUCTION

3.1 General

ESAB’s WMS 4000 system is a data program intended for monitoring thewelding power sources LTP 450, LTS 320, LUD 350, LUD 450, all providedwith a CAN bus, and also the LAF series and the TAF series with Echlonbuses.

Up to six welding parameters can be monitored in real time on the screen atthe same time. These parameters and other monitored parameters arecontinuously registered.

The reports can then be printed out and used for making analyses. Theycan also be included in the quality documentation.

The letters WMS in WMS 4000 stand for Welding Monitoring System.

3.2 Computer

The data program should be installed in an EMC--suppressed industrialcomputer (PC) of high performance and storing capacity according to thefollowing specification:

S IBM compatible

S Operating system: Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows 95 orWindows NT 4.0.

S Processor: Pentium, 133 MHz or better.

S RAM memory: 16 Mb or more.

S Serial interface for data communication: RS--232.

S Signal transfer: Optical transfer over fibre cable to the serial port of thecomputer.Optical transfer is not sensitive to interference from the surroundings.

S Hard disk capacity: min 1500 Mb recommended.

S Screen: 14“ colour monitor or bigger.

S The data program is intended for monitors with a resolution of 800x600or higher. The resolution influences the number of parameters that canbe shown simultaneously in real time on the screen.

4 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

4.1 General

S The program is presented on the screen by way of window menus.

S The program does not control the welding process. Its only task is toshow and to register welding data.

S The operator establishes contact between the power source andWMS 4000 over the system bus. The welding power source suppliesidentification and setting values and indicates the parameters to bemeasured. The operator can name the workpieces and indicatereference and limit values for the welding parameters according to theWPS instructions.

S If subwelds are included in the welding a time can be set for a break inthe monitoring when the limit values between the subwelds are to bechanged. This is to avoid error messages coming up when the settingvalues between the subwelds and the resulting limit values are changed.

S The system can register up to 30 welding parameters.

S The welding power source measures the welding data and displays themconsecutively in the course of welding.

S Depending on the resolution of the screen, data for 4 to 6 weldingparameters can be displayed in real time simultaneously in the form ofdiagrams.

S By colouring the background of the diagram red, the system indicates ifthe set tolerances are exceeded. If the values are lower than the setones the background of the diagram will be blue.Due to the fact that the diagram can be too long to show the markings, the deviations are indicated by way of a red box to the right in theWelding display when the value is too high and a blue one when it is toolow, see page 8.

S The system can also call attention to this matter acoustically.

S All data transferred can be stored in the computer, and after terminatedwelding they can be studied on the screen and printed out fordocumentation.

S The reports are presented in the form of diagrams or tables.

Setting data report

This key (F7) offers the possibility of viewing all logged welds and their weldreports, entered limit values, welding values with logs and a table ofmeasuring values, registered consecutively during the welding process. These values can also be presented in the form of a diagram, displayed onthe screen or printed out. Error messages can also be viewed.

TheWELDDATA database is arranged in chronological order, Workpiece innumerical andWeld in alphabetical order. The parameters are displayed according to the order in the welding powersource.

Report

Here you choose which type of report to be presented: Day Report, SettingData Report, Weld Data, Limit values, Setting values, Measurement values,Error messages, Graphs or Weld Report.

Day ReportHere you can find a summing--up of the welds of the day.

Example of a Day Report:

Special characters are used in the Day Report to facilitate the interpretationof the welding result.N.B. Irrespective of whether characters are available or not, the fullinformation is to be found in the applicable report.

Characters - explanation:

X = No limit value case is activated for the welding.

! = The limit values are too high or too low in the selected Limit Value Case. The Limit Value Report informs you about the parameters which have beenassigned limit values.More exclamation marks (!!) indicate that many measurement parametersare outside the monitored limits. The placing of the characters informs youabout the parameter causing an error signal in relation to the order of theparameters in the Day Report.

O = One or more parameters have not been assigned limit values.

+ = Error messages from the welding machine. Check the influence on theweld result by studying the error type in the Error Message Report and themarking on the measurement graphs, see below when the error occurred.

13 TROUBLE SHOOTING AND ERROR MESSAGES

13.1 Documentation

The data program is provided with a great number of protections withensuing error messages. Also the operating system has a number of errormessages guiding you to the cause of the error. It is important to make anote of these deviations. One way of copying the error messages is to press Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen (pop--up window) and then paste the copy in a suitable wordprocessor.

This can be of good help when you contact your supplier to get the erroranalysed.

13.2 Restart

Errors can often be corrected by switching off the welding power source andthe computer and then starting again. No welding information will be deletedin doing this, but incorrectly adjusted values can be corrected in theprogram.

13.3 Error Messages

Error messages come from the power source and can be interpreteddifferently for different power sources. See the respective manuals for errormessages.
