A “public university” is a university that is

predominantly funded by public meansthrough a national or sub-nationalgovernment.

Dhaka University is the first public university

in Bangladesh established at 1921.

At present no. of public universities are 33.

The term "private university" simply meansthat the university's funding comes fromtuition, investments and private donors.

NSU is the first private university inBangladesh under the private university act1992.

Tuition Fees

A very vital point which distinguishes

private and public universities is cost. InBangladesh’s economy, it is affordable fora student to get admitted in a publicuniversity very easily. But since the cost of education in private university isextremely high, it is not possible foreveryone to get admitted in privateuniversities because of their significantlyhigher tuition fees.

The courses offered by the privateuniversity depend on market opportunityand demand. Commercial consideration isone of the primary objectives that reflect onthe curriculum of these institutions. Ratherthen public universities have no anytendency to revenue earnings. So that theyare offered courses in music, fashion,

product design, interior architecture andhospital management etc.

Private universities don’t receive any fundfrom government like the publicuniversities. The universities run theiroperation based on the collection of 

academic charges and student fees.

classrooms, adequate spaces for largerclasses, rich libraries, modernlaboratories, adequate facilities for regularand visiting faculty and administrators,

spaces for indoor and outdoor games andsports, students’ common rooms,auditoriums etc

Compared to public universities private

universities are still faced with shortageof these. But facilities in privateuniversities are usually better in terms of decoration of class room, computer centers

and Internet access.

Public university have adequate highqualified full time faculty members. Privateuniversities are relies to the part timefaculty members and they do not have

much qualified Faculty compare to thepublic universities. Private universitiesensure quality education to hire teachersfrom public universities with a huge

amount.

Public universities encourage to doresearch work and they provide funds forresearch. Private universities neither

encourage nor discourage the facultymembers and usually there is noresearch grant available. Research is apersonal concern of the faculty membersin most of the private universities inBangladesh.

The advantages of public universitiesare still being able to get best students,because their tuition fee is low; theobvious choice of a good student is a

public university. The advantages of private universities compared to publicones are based on the following keyaspects: collaboration with other

international universities, no academicsession delays, politics-freeenvironment, and internationalstandards based grading systems

(CGPA). it is hoped that both the publicand rivate universities will consider
